Social Media and Website Use: The Experiences of Parents and Carers Accessing Care at the Oxford Craniofacial Unit.

INTRODUCTION: Historically, medical professionals have been the providers of specialist information about rare medical conditions. Now, increasingly, patients and the public are using the internet to access and generate information about medical diagnoses. The global nature of the internet allows patients to connect across geographical borders, and to obtain and share information that would have been previously inaccessible to them. This research investigated the use of website and social media by parents of children with craniosynostosis. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey-based design was em

Caregiver perceptions of sexual abuse and its effect on management after a disclosure.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to examine caregiver management strategies for child sexual abuse (CSA) when presented with hypothetical scenarios that vary in physical invasiveness. METHODS: One hundred fifty three caregivers were given 3 scenarios of CSA with 7 management strategies presented in the 21-item Taking Action Strategies (TAS) scale. Caregivers were asked to rate strategies according to their willingness to carry out each action with rating of 5=greater likelihood of carrying out the action specified while a rating of 1=a lower likelihood of carrying out that action. CSA scen

The impact of child type 1 diabetes on parental incomes in a welfare state context: quasi-experimental evidence from Swedish national registers.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The aim of this study was to quantify the impact of childhood-onset type 1 diabetes on parental incomes in a Nordic welfare state. METHODS: In this register-based quasi-experimental study, we included the parents of 13,358 children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in Sweden from 1993 to 2014 together with 506,516 population-based matched control parents. A difference-in-differences approach was used to compare income trajectories between exposed parents and control parents. Work-related and pension-qualifying incomes (including parental benefits) were assessed during the first

Harsh parenting in adolescence and symptoms of depression in emerging adulthood: The moderating role of sleep.

OBJECTIVES: Harsh parenting occurs often in adolescence and confers risk for depression symptoms. However, individual differences exist and explication of variables that exacerbate or attenuate risk is needed. Sleep problems impair coping abilities and may magnify the effects of harsh parenting. Using a 5-wave design spanning 9 years, we investigated adolescents' sleep as a moderator of relations between harsh parenting in adolescence and depression symptoms in emerging adulthood. METHODS: Families participated over 5 waves (child's M age at each wave was 16, 17, 18, 23, and 25 years; 245 fam

Combining parent and child training for young children with ADHD.

The efficacy of the Incredible Years parent and child training programs is established in children diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder but not among young children whose primary diagnosis is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We conducted a randomized control trial evaluating the combined parent and child program interventions among 99 children diagnosed with ADHD (ages 4-6). Mother reported significant treatment effects for appropriate and harsh discipline, use of physical punishment, and monitoring, whereas fathers reported no significant parenting changes. Independent

Dental abnormalities in children of fathers with substance use disorders.

Very little is known about whether parental substance-use disorders (SUDs) affect the prevalence of dental abnormalities among their offspring. This study examined the prevalence of various dental abnormalities in sons of fathers with SUDs (the high average risk, or HAR, group) versus the prevalence of these abnormalities among sons of fathers without SUDs (the low average risk, or LAR, group). A total of 385 sons and their families were comprehensively assessed at five different ages, 10-12, 12-14, 16, 19, and 22. All of these participants were participating in an ongoing longitudinal NIDA-fu

Probing Relations of Attachment with PTSD in Latinx Asylum-Seeking Youth Released from Federal Custody.

OBJECTIVE: There has been tremendous growth in Latinx families seeking asylum at the U.S./Mexico border and a health disparity associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a growing concern. The aim of this study was to examine how attachment to mothers, fathers, and peers relates to PTSD symptoms among Latinx asylum seeking children to provide first data on putative protective interpersonal factors in this high-risk group. METHOD: We interviewed N = 57 (Mage = 9, female = 46%) young Latinx children and their caregivers who had been released from Customs and Border Patrol custody w

Gender differences in empathy in parents at high- and low-risk of child physical abuse.

OBJECTIVES: The present research was designed to study empathy in high-risk parents for child physical abuse. The main objective was to study if high-risk mothers and fathers, compared to low-risk mothers and fathers, presented more Personal distress, less Perspective-taking, less Empathic concern and a deficit in dispositional empathy toward their partner and children. METHOD: Based on their scores on the Abuse Scale of the CAP Inventory [J.S. Milner, The Child Abuse Potential Inventory: Manual, 2nd ed., Psytec Corporation, Webster, NC], 19 (9 fathers and 10 mothers) high- and 26 (12 fathers

Developmental trajectories of irritability and bidirectional associations with maternal depression.

OBJECTIVE: Irritability is a dimensional trait in typical development and a common presenting symptom in many psychiatric disorders, including depression. However, little is known about the developmental trajectory of irritability or how child irritability interacts with maternal depression. The present study identifies classes of irritability trajectories from toddlerhood to middle childhood; characterizes maternal depression and other family, social environment, and child variables within each irritability trajectory class; and, as a more exploratory analysis, examines bidirectional associat

Preadolescent children of substance-dependent fathers with antisocial personality disorder: psychiatric disorders and problem behaviors.

We compared psychiatric disorders and problem behavior scores in pre-adolescent children of fathers with alcohol or other drug dependence and ASP (SD+/ASP+), children whose fathers had substance dependence without ASP (SD+/ASP-), and children whose fathers were without either disorder (SD-/ASP-). SD+/ASP+ children showed elevated rates of major depression, conduct disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and separation anxiety disorder when compared to SD+/ASP- and SD-/ASP- children. SD+/ASP+ children had higher internalizing and externalizing problem

Metabolic rate and energy balance in very low birth weight infants during kangaroo holding by their mothers and fathers.

The aim of the study was to compare effects of maternal and paternal kangaroo care on oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, energy expenditure, skin and rectal temperatures, heart and respiratory rates, arterial saturation, and behavioral states. Eleven preterm infants with gestational age of 28 to 31 weeks, birth weight of 560 to 1390 gm, and postnatal age of 8 to 48 days were studied before, during, and after maternal and paternal kangaroo care. Skin temperature (lower leg) increased significantly during both maternal (36.2 +/- 0.9 degrees vs 36.9 +/- 1.2 degrees C) and paternal (36

Culturally Informed Communication of Neonatal Death in Chinese Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

IMPORTANCE: Given the uniquely sensitive context of neonatal death in China, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) clinicians face considerable pressure as they are required to communicate this profound loss to parents in a culturally appropriate manner. OBJECTIVE: To examine how NICU physicians and nurses communicate with parents about neonatal death, navigate cultural expectations in the process, and manage communication decisions across varied clinical scenarios. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This qualitative study used semistructured interviews to collect data and a descriptive phenom

Cortisol and blood pressure levels decreased in fathers during the first hour of skin-to-skin contact with their premature babies.

AIM: Premature birth is an extremely stressful experience. In 2013 to 2014, we explored the physiological stress responses of fathers during their first skin-to-skin contact (SSC) with their new baby. METHODS: We recruited 49 fathers whose partners had given birth to a premature baby of up to 33 weeks and three days. The study, in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a Quebec hospital, measured the physiological stress responses of the fathers before and after they first experienced SSC with their new baby. Cortisol levels and blood pressure were measured, and a generalised estimating e

Ridicule and being laughed at in the family: gelotophobia, gelotophilia, and katagelasticism in young children and their parents.

The fear of being laughed at (gelotophobia), the joy of being laughed at (gelotophilia), and the joy of laughing at others (katagelasticism) were tested in a sample of 189 7- and 8-year-olds and their parents (185 mothers, 160 fathers). The dispositions were widely unrelated in the full sample. There was a positive relation between girls' and mothers' katagelasticism as well as between the 7-year-old boys' katagelasticism and their parents' gelotophilia. Furthermore, the 8-year-old boys' fear of being laughed at correlated robustly positively with their parents' gelotophobia and their gelotoph
