Recovery of fine motor control after submaximal wrist fatigue.

This study investigated how a repeated submaximal hand tracking task affects fine motor performance and short-term recovery. Nineteen males traced a 2:3 Lissajous curve using a haptic wrist robot both pre- and post-fatigue. The fatigue protocol was the same task with resistance applied to the handle of the robot at 40% maximal voluntary isometric wrist force. Performance was measured at baseline and at seven intervals during recovery (0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 minutes). The fatigue protocol led to a 12% decrease in grip force and remained below baseline at 10 minutes. Movement quality, quantifi…

Fatigue in Myasthenia Gravis: Recent Advances and Emerging Concepts.

Fatigue is a common, often disabling symptom in myasthenia gravis (MG), distinct from muscle fatigability, and strongly associated with reduced quality of life. This narrative review examines current evidence on fatigue in MG, its patient impact, and future research directions. Earlier studies, mostly small and heterogeneous, reported a highly variable prevalence of fatigue. Recent large registry-based studies have now established a more consistent prevalence around 60% and confirmed associations with disease severity, depressive symptoms, and physical inactivity. Fatigue has also been assesse…

Fatigue relief: the contribution of non-invasive neuromodulation (FAREviaNM).

Fatigue is a universal and constructive experience, yet chronic fatigue-defined as a persistent lack of energy that limits daily life as assessed by modified Fatigue Impact Scale (mFIS)-remains nowadays a symptom waiting for effective mitigation. Evidence across neurological, oncological, and psychosocial conditions shows that fatigue shares a common neurophysiological substrate: disrupted sensory-motor imbalances and network synchrony that can be targeted by established interventions-physical activity, mindfulness, yoga, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. Within this landscape, non-invasive ne…

Motor and Cognitive Fatigue in Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) is the most prevalent dysimmune disease of sensorimotor nerves. However, based on various non-sensorimotor symptoms (NSMS), the concept of a purely peripheral condition has recently been challenged. Against this background, we aimed to differentiate motor and cognitive components of fatigue as the most prominent NSMS in CIDP. METHODS: Cognitive and motor fatigue constructs were assessed in 47 CIDP patients and 31 healthy controls (HC) using the Fatigue Scale for Motor and Cognitive Functions (FSMC). The results were referred…

Brain functional connectivity after Stroop task induced cognitive fatigue.

We aim to investigate the changes in brain functional connectivity induced by cognitive fatigue from a whole-brain perspective and multiple angles to uncover the underlying mechanisms in healthy individuals, thereby enhancing high-quality cognitive activities and the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation training. This study involved 48 healthy adults aged 20-35 and was conducted in two phases: cognitive fatigue validation and whole-brain connectivity feature analysis. We used fMRI to compare Amplitude of Low-Frequency Fluctuations (ALFF), Regional Homogeneity (ReHo), Functional Connectivi…

Adaptations to fatigue during a repetitive multiplanar lifting task.

Warehouse workers are often required to perform physically demanding repetitive lifting tasks leading to fatigue. Previous research has primarily focused on constrained lifting tasks when investigating fatigue. The purpose of the current study was to investigate fatigue-based movement adaptations during a multiplanar, ecologically relevant lifting task. Participants (n = 28) lifted, transferred, and lowered a mass continuously for 60 min. Full body kinematics and muscle activity of the lumbar erector spinae, rectus abdominis, external oblique, and anterior deltoids were collected continuously.…

Gastrointestinal Barrier Disruption in Post-COVID Syndrome Fatigue Patients.

BACKGROUND: Post-COVID Syndrome (PCS) is the term for a condition with persistent symptoms in a proportion of COVID-19 patients after asymptomatic, mild, or severe disease courses. Numbers vary, but the current estimate is that after COVID-19 approximately 10% develop PCS. The aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and associations with the development of PCS with fatigue, post-exertional malaise (PEM), orthostatic dysregulation, autonomous dysregulation, and/or neurocognitive dysregulation. METHODS: By combining medical record d…

Effect of mental fatigue on hand force production capacities.

Mental fatigue is common in society, but its effects on force production capacities remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of mental fatigue on maximal force production, rate of force development-scaling factor (RFD-SF), and force steadiness during handgrip contractions. Fourteen participants performed two randomized sessions, during which they either carried out a cognitively demanding task (i.e., a visual attention task) or a cognitively nondemanding task (i.e., documentary watching for 62 min). The mental fatigue was evaluated subjectively and objectively (performances a…

A soluble garlic polysaccharide supplement alleviates fatigue in mice.

Garlic polysaccharide (GP) is an inulin-type fructan with potent antioxidant activity, whereas its health-promoting functions are not well explored. In the current study, we established a fatigue model by forcing mice to swim in a water tank for at least one hour every day. We measured changes in body weight, exhaustive swimming time, and biochemical indices related to fatigue in weight-bearing swimming mice fed low (1.25 g/kg-BW) and high doses (2.5 g/kg-BW) of GP by daily gavage for 7 weeks. The soluble GP was extracted from industrial garlic wastes using a patented method. The results indic…

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in Patients with Deteriorated Iron Metabolism.

Fatigue is a common, non-specific symptom that often impairs patients' quality of life. Even though fatigue may be the first symptom of many serious diseases, it is often underestimated due to its non-specific nature. Iron metabolism disorders are a prominent example of conditions where fatigue is a leading symptom. Whether it is an iron deficiency or overload, tiredness is one of the most common features. Despite significant progress in diagnosing and treating iron pathologies, the approach to chronic fatigue syndrome in such patients is not precisely determined. Our study aims to present the…

Fatigue and activity-dependent conduction block in neuromuscular disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Fatigue is a major disabling problem in patients with neuromuscular disorders. Both nerve demyelination and increased axonal branching associated with collateral sprouting reduce the safety factor for impulse transmission and could cause activity-dependent hyperpolarization and conduction block during voluntary contraction, and thus fatigue. This study aimed to investigate whether activity-dependent conduction block is associated with fatigue in demyelinating neuropathies and lower motor neuron disorders. METHODS: This study included 31 patients (17 with chronic inflammatory demyel…

Physiological assessment of orthostatic intolerance in chronic fatigue syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic intolerance-OI is common in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome-ME/CFS. We used a 10-min passive vertical lean test as orthostatic challenge-OC and measured changes in vitals and end tidal CO2 (eTCO2). An abnormal physiologic response to OC was identified in 60% of the 63 patients evaluated from one to three times over several years. Hypocapnia, either resting or induced by OC, was the most frequent abnormality, followed by postural orthostatic tachycardia. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the physiologic response of patients with ME/CFS to a standardized OC. DESIGN…
