Early Time-Restricted Feeding Mitigates Insulin Resistance and Proteinuria in Prepubertal Obese Dahl Salt-Sensitive Rats.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies from our laboratory have shown that hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance (IR) are elevated in obese Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) leptin receptor mutant (SSLepRmutant) rats compared to SS rats before puberty. Clinical studies suggest that time-restricted feeding improves insulin sensitivity and is considered beneficial in obese patients. Therefore, the current study examined whether time-restricted feeding improves IR and reduces renal injury in obese SSLepRmutant rats prior to puberty. METHODS: Four-week-old SS and SSLepRmutant rats were given either ad libitum acc

Interventions for positive parental feeding practices in low-income households: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Parental feeding practices play a critical role in shaping children's dietary behaviours and self-regulation during early childhood. These practices are particularly important in low-income households, where structural constraints, including household food insecurity (HFI), may influence how feeding guidance is implemented and sustained. Although a growing number of interventions aim to promote positive parental feeding practices, there remains limited synthesis of how contemporary programmes are conceptualised, designed, and delivered within low-income contexts, including the exte

The Optimal Feeding Enterostomy Creation During Esophagectomy to Reduce the Long-Term Risk of Small Bowel Obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Although feeding jejunostomy (FJ) is commonly created during esophagectomy for postoperative enteral nutrition, it can be a cause of postoperative small bowel obstruction (SBO). We introduced a technique of feeding enterostomy using the round ligament of the liver (FERL) to reduce SBO. In this study, we aimed to clarify the efficacy of FERL in reducing the postoperative SBO compared with FJ. METHODS: We assessed 400 consecutive patients who underwent esophagectomy with gastric tube reconstruction between 2011 and 2016, before and after the introduction of FERL (FJ, n = 200; FERL,

Microbial contamination of continuous drip feedings.

We evaluated the extent and effects of bacterial contamination of an open continuous enteral feeding system. Eighty-two quantitative enteral feeding cultures and clinical data were obtained during 8 days of observation on each of 33 patients. Cultures of appropriate sites were obtained on febrile patients and compared to the enteral feeding culture. Gram negative bacilli (GNB) in the enteral feeding correlated with abdominal distension in the patients (10 of 12 patients with GNB compared to 5 of 21 without GNB; p less than 0.01). Nine of the 10 patients with GNB and distension were receiving s

Transpyloric versus gastric tube feeding for preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Enteral feeding tubes for preterm infants may be placed in the stomach (gastric tube feeding) or in the upper small bowel (transpyloric tube feeding). There are potential advantages and disadvantages to both routes. OBJECTIVES: In preterm infants who require enteral tube feeding, does feeding via the transpyloric route versus the gastric route improve feeding tolerance, and growth and development, without increasing adverse consequences? SEARCH STRATEGY: The standard search strategy of the Cochrane Neonatal Review Group was used. This included electronic searches of MEDLINE and E

Supplying the energy and fiber needs of dairy cows from alternate feed sources.

Alternate feeds are a major resource of the dairy industry. The major issue involving them is a method to predict accurately nutritive value from laboratory analyses. Variation in nutrient content of most alternate feeds is greater than in feed grains. Another issue is which depression factors to use in adjusting values for TDN from maintenance to production intakes. The NRC uses an average depression of 8% for all feeds; others think each feedstuff should be depressed individually, and discount factors have been proposed. For some alternate feeds, large differences in net energy estimates occ

Feeding Interventions for Infants with Growth Failure in the First Six Months of Life: A Systematic Review.

(1) Introduction: Current evidence on managing infants under six months with growth failure or other nutrition-related risk is sparse and low quality. This review aims to inform research priorities to fill this evidence gap, focusing on breastfeeding practices. (2) Methods: We searched PubMed, CINAHL Plus, and Cochrane Library for studies on feeding interventions that aim to restore or improve the volume or quality of breastmilk and breastfeeding when breastfeeding practices are sub-optimal or prematurely stopped. We included studies from both low- and middle-income countries and high-income c

[Improvement of QOL by advance in the management of respiratory disorders, dysphagia and upper gastrointestinal disorders in children with severe cerebral palsy].

In children with severe cerebral palsy, the daily use of naso-pharyngeal airway, daily chest physiotherapy and adequate posture control markedly improve respiratory disorders and their consequent complications. Non-invasive ventiratory support methods such as nasal IPPV and nasal CPAP can be also effective. Enteral feeding through a naso-jejunal catheter can successfully manage feeding difficulty due to gastroesophageal reflux when surgical treatment is difficult. Exact assessment of aspiration by adequately performed video-fluoroscopic swallowing examination leads to national management of dy

Levamisole incorporation in fish feed - Ensuring the medication dose and avoidance of leaching into the water.

Levamisole, an anthelmintic and immunostimulant drug, has been studied as a promising alternative for aquaculture use. While oral administration through feeding is the main route of administration in fish farming, no studies evaluating methods of levamisole incorporation into the feed have been reported so far. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate potential procedures for levamisole incorporation in extruded fish feed using ethyl cellulose, gelatin, or vegetable oil, to avoid drug leaching to the water during the animal's medication. A suitable LC-MS/MS method was optimized (full factorial

Effects of oro-esophageal versus nasogastric feeding on dysphagia for ischemic stroke survivors: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Enteral nutrition is commonly practiced for ischemic stroke survivors with dysphagia. In Eastern Asia, nasogastric and oro-esophageal tubes are the mainstream options. However, there is a lack of rigorous clinical evidence on the effects of these two feeding methods on swallowing-related rehabilitation outcomes and clinical relevance. OBJECTIVES: This study is clinically oriented and aims to assess the effect of nasogastric versus oro-esophageal tube feeding on the degree and speed of dysphagia improvement, and aspiration symptoms. METHODS: This multicenter randomized controlled …
