Retinoic acid retards fetal and hindlimb skeletal development asymmetrically in a retinoic acid-induced clubfoot model.

Retinoic acid (RA) has been shown to induce congenital clubfoot in animal models, but it is unknown whether the effect of RA on the formation of clubfoot in vivo results from generalized growth retardation or from the specific effects of hindlimb skeletal development. Our experimental research was based on a clubfoot model treated by maternal administration of RA (120, 130 or 140 mg/kg body weight) as an intragastric dose on embryonic day 10 (E10), and a control group was administered with an equivalent dose of solvent. Prenatal RA exposure reduced fetal body weight, length and skeletal ossifi

Maternal obesity accelerates fetal pancreatic beta-cell but not alpha-cell development in sheep: prenatal consequences.

Maternal obesity affects offspring weight, body composition, and organ function, increasing diabetes and metabolic syndrome risk. We determined effects of maternal obesity and a high-energy diet on fetal pancreatic development. Sixty days prior to breeding, ewes were assigned to control [100% of National Research Council (NRC) recommendations] or obesogenic (OB; 150% NRC) diets. At 75 days gestation, OB ewes exhibited elevated insulin-to-glucose ratios at rest and during a glucose tolerance test, demonstrating insulin resistance compared with control ewes. In fetal studies, ewes ate their resp

Effects of Jinye Baidu Granule on fetal growth and development with maternal active human cytomegalovirus infection.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of Jinye Baidu Granule ( JYBDG), a traditional Chinese medicine compound prescription, on fetal growth and development with maternal active human cytomegalovirus infection. METHODS: A prospective, randomized and controlled trial was adopted during January 1996 to June 2002. From the pregnant women with an abnormal pregnant history, 240 cases were screened to be infected by human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). They were assigned according to the random number

Downregulation of Bcl-2 proteins in type I spinal muscular atrophy motor neurons during fetal development.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the survival motor neuron gene. The degeneration and loss of the anterior horn cells constitute the major neuropathological finding in SMA, although the mechanism and timing of this abnormal motor neuron death remain unknown. It has recently been reported that the fetal SMA spinal cord shows a significant increase in cells with DNA fragmentation, suggesting that the programmed cell death is aberrantly increased in type I SMA during development. We have analyzed 2 antiapoptotic proteins, Bcl-2 and Bcl-X, by

Human macrophage metalloelastase (MMP-12) expression is induced in chondrocytes during fetal development and malignant transformation.

Fetal development and tumor progression both require a complex system of extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis and breakdown, which is mediated by, for instance, the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Human metalloelastase (MMP-12) is an MMP, the expression of which has so far been documented in macrophages associated with atherosclerosis, wound repair, and certain cancers. In this study we first examined the expression of MMP-12 during human fetal development. By in situ hybridization MMP-12 transcripts were detected in chondrocytes of hypertrophic cartilage in vertebrae of the spinal column, i…

Mimicking low amniotic pressure by chronic pharyngeal drainage does not impair lung development in fetal sheep.

OBJECTIVE: The etiology of oligohydramnios-related pulmonary hypoplasia is not understood but is known to involve chronic lung liquid loss. We tested the hypothesis that low amniotic pressure in oligohydramnios disturbs the normal tracheal-amniotic pressure gradient to increase lung liquid loss and impair lung development. STUDY DESIGN: Chronic pharyngeal catheterization with drainage to the exterior was used in 15 fetal sheep to mimic reduced amniotic pressure at the upper airway in the presence of normal amniotic fluid volume. RESULTS: Pharyngeal pressures relative to amniotic pressures we

Pulmonary stenosis with intact ventricular septum: documentation of development of the lesion echocardiographically during fetal life.

We describe a case of severe pulmonary stenosis with intact interventricular septum diagnosed during fetal life at 34 weeks gestational age. An echocardiographic examination had been performed on the same fetus at 20 weeks, when no cardiac anomalies were observed. It is concluded that this form of pulmonary stenosis might be a lesion either acquired during fetal life or becoming progressively more severe in the prenatal period.

Fetal hydantoin syndrome in rats: dose-effect relationships of prenatal phenytoin on postnatal development and behavior.

Sprague-Dawley rats were gavaged once daily on days 7-18 of gestation with, 100, 150, or 200 mg/kg of phenytoin. Only the highest dose of phenytoin decreased maternal weight during gestation or increased offspring mortality up to weaning. Offspring were evaluated for activity prior to weaning (pivoting and photocell) and afterwards (figure 8, open-field, and hole-board), dynamic righting development, maze learning (Biel maze), and visual discrimination (Y maze), and for startle reaction to both auditory and tactile stimuli. The highest dose of phenytoin produced increased activity on all tests

The utility of fetal heart rate deceleration's descending slope in searching for a non-National Institute of Child Health and Human Development parameter for the detection of fetal acidosis.

OBJECTIVE: To identify new parameters predicting fetal acidemia. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study in a cohort of deliveries from a tertiary referral hospital-based cohort deliveries in Zaragoza, Spain between 2018 and 2021 was performed. To predict fetal acidemia, the NICHD categorizations and non-NICHD parameters were analyzed in the electronic fetal monitoring (EFM). Those included total reperfusion time, total deceleration area and the slope of the descending limb of the fetal heart rate of the last deceleration curve. The accuracy of the parameters was evaluated using the speci

Development of the gubernaculum and processus vaginalis in freemartinism: further evidence in support of a specific fetal testis hormone governing male-specific gubernacular development.

BACKGROUND: Freemartinism occurs in some species of ruminants and affects most female bovine fetuses in heterosexual, multiple pregnancies owing to fusion of the chorionic blood circulations soon after implantation. Maldevelopment of the ovaries and Müllerian ducts have been described and recognized as resulting from exposure of their respective primordia to an excess of anti-Müllerian hormone. The present study aimed to analyse the prenatal growth and development of the gubernaculum in freemartins to find out its possible affliction through foetal testis hormones derived from their male co-tw

Exploring the Effect of Nutrition on Fetal Development in Pregnant Patients With Inflammatory Gut Diseases: A Scoping Review.

Inflammatory gut diseases (IGDs) are increasing in prevalence and pose unique challenges during pregnancy. Poorly controlled IGDs in pregnant women are linked to adverse fetal outcomes such as low birth weight, preterm birth, and impaired gut microbiome development. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in magnesium, folate, and vitamin B12, exacerbate these risks due to both inadequate intake and malabsorption. This scoping review aimed to evaluate the role of nutrition in fetal development among pregnant women with IGDs, highlighting dietary strategies that may enhance maternal gastrointest…

The Involvement of Gut Microbiota and Their Key Metabolites in Regulating Fetal Development via the Gut-Placental Axis.

The gut is the organ with the largest number of microorganisms in the organism, and host-microbe interactions allow the host to shape the composition of the microbiome and thus its numbers and diversity. The gut microbiome is integral to the facilitation of vital host functions that have a direct impact on the overall health of the host. This paper aims to present a thorough overview of the composition and function of the gut microbiome and its main metabolites (such as lipopolysaccharides, short-chain fatty acids, and bile acids), as well as their key roles and mechanisms in fetal development…

Development and validation of a machine learning-based early prediction model for fetal acidosis in vaginal deliveries.

UNLABELLED: Fetal acidosis (FA) is a prevalent clinical symptom in newborns during the perinatal period, which can lead to higher risks of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, seizures, intraventricular hemorrhage and delayed developmental milestones. However, there is no effective tool for the risk assessment and prediction of FA in neonates. Therefore, our objective is to develop a FA prediction model in newborns by using machine-learning algorithms. Parturients and their neonates who delivered at the Fuzhou University Affiliated Provincial Hospital between January 2018 and December 2023 were in

Evaluation of calcium and phosphorus elements in the developing human fetal long bone at different trimesters of pregnancy.

Recent bone research has emphasized the importance of mineral composition and peak bone mass during the fetal and postnatal periods, impairment in which are related to subsequent bone diseases in later life. However, there is no quantitative data on the variations in the composition across the growth period of fetal bone to gain better insight into the fetal origin of adult bone disorders and old-age bone diseases. This study analyzed the mineral composition of the developing humerus bone in different trimesters of pregnancy. Stillbirth or medically terminated human fetal specimens ranging fro

The Influence of Maternal Diabetes on Placental Function and Fetal Brain Development: A Review of Advanced Imaging Methods.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common medical complications of pregnancy and is associated with increased maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. The placenta has a unique role as a transient organ that can profoundly influence the lifelong health of both mother and child. In pregnancies complicated by diabetes, the placenta plays a central role in bridging maternal vascular, hormonal and metabolic effects on fetal neurodevelopment. The objective of this study is to review the current literature on in vivo placental and fetal neurodevelopment in pregnant women with DM. We presen

Effects of dietary supplementation of creatine on fetal development in gilts at d 60 and d 90 of gestation.

BACKGROUND: The creatine-creatine kinase-phosphocreatine (Cr-CK-PCr) system maintains intracellular ratios of ATP/ADP for support of cellular functions and has been characterized at the placental-uterine interface of rodents, primates, swine and sheep, and thus may support fetal development. This study determined effects of dietary supplementation of creatine (Cr) to gestating gilts on fetal development, the number and ratio of primary and secondary muscle fibers, and on protein expression in endometrium and fetal biceps-femoris muscle, respectively in fetal pigs on d 60 and d 90 of gestation.…

NR2F2 regulation of interstitial to fetal Leydig cell differentiation in the testis: insights into differences of sex development.

Testicular fetal Leydig cells are a specialized cell type responsible for embryo masculinization. Fetal Leydig cells produce androgens, that induce the differentiation of male reproductive system and sexual characteristics. Deficiencies in Leydig cell differentiation leads to various disorders of sex development and male reproductive defects such as ambiguous genitalia, hypospadias, cryptorchidism, and infertility. Fetal Leydig cells are thought to originate from proliferating progenitor cells in the testis interstitium, marked by genes like Arx , Pdgfra , Tcf21 and Wnt5a . However, the precis
