Socio-economic outcome after blunt orthopaedic trauma: Implications on injury prevention.

BACKGROUND: Several large studies have identified factors associated with long-term outcome after orthopaedic injuries. However, long-term social and economic implications have not been published so far. The aim of this investigation is to study the long-term socio-economic consequences of patients sustaining severe trauma. METHODS: Patients treated at a level one trauma center were invited for a follow-up (at least 10 years) examination. There were 637 patients who responded and were examined. Inclusion criteria included injury severity score (ISS) ≥ 16 points, presence of lower and upper ex

An observational study of system-level changes to improve the recording of very brief advice for smoking cessation in an inpatient mental health setting.

BACKGROUND: Smoking prevalence among people with psychosis remains high. Providing Very Brief Advice (VBA) comprising: i) ASK, identifying a patient's smoking status ii) ADVISE, advising on the best way to stop and iii) ACT (OFFER), offering a referral to specialist smoking cessation support, increases quit attempts in the general population. We assessed whether system-level changes in a UK mental health organisation improved the recording of the provision of ASK, ADVISE, ACT (OFFER) and consent to referral to specialist smoking cessation support (ACT (CONSENT)). METHODS: We conducted a study

Exploring Correlations of Unemployment, Underemployment, and Well-Being Among Autistic Job Seekers by Race in the United States.

PURPOSE: Autistic adults have high levels of unemployment and underemployment, which may have detrimental effects on their financial and psychological well-being. In the current project, we explore correlates of psychological and financial well-being, as well as depressive symptoms, with different levels of employment while examining whether race moderates these relationships. METHODS: We utilized survey data from autistic job seekers in the United States who expressed interest in a larger clinical trial of a supported employment program. RESULTS: Among the 710 participants, 248 (34.9%) were c

Modeling costs and burden of informal caregiving for persons with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregiving contributes significantly to the health and well being of chronically ill persons. While a vast literature demonstrates this connection, the cost and financial burden of informal caregiving has received considerably less research attention, especially as it-pertains to bipolar disorder. AIMS OF THE STUDY: This paper develops an integrated burden model of informal caregiving, which is contrasted with other more traditional models of caregiving costs, and then uses these models to estimate the financial burden of bipolar disorder. The "goodness" of these various

Family vulnerability, disruption, and parent mental health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study evaluated two pathways that may help explain changes in parent mental health during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. One pathway, the preexisting vulnerability pathway, considered whether family relationship quality prior to the COVID-19 pandemic predicted parent mental health during the pandemic. The second, the family disruption pathway, considered deterioration in family relationship quality as predictive of declines in parent mental health during the pandemic. We measured family relationship quality in terms of family cohesion, conflict, and routines and predicted pare

Are Gambling Motives all the Same? The Psychometric Properties of the GMQ-F Amongst Sports Bettors.

The Gambling Motives Questionnaire - Financial (GMQ-F) is the most widely used scale for assessing gambling motives. Although previous research supports the reliability and validity of GMQ-F scores, no study has examined its psychometric properties among sports bettors, which present distinct demographics and clinical characteristics. To this end, this study evaluated the psychometric properties and measurement invariance of the GMQ-F among 920 sports bettors. We hypothesized that the GMQ-F would exhibit a four-factor structure and conducted a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory

Documenting the development, adoption and pre-ebola implementation of Liberia's integrated disease surveillance and response (IDSR) strategy.

BACKGROUND: In the immediate aftermath of a 14-year civil conflict that disrupted the health system, Liberia adopted the internationally rec … se reporting, risk communication, community engagement, and staff supervision systems. Insufficient financial support and an abundance of vertical programs further impeded progress. In-depth accounts by donors and key governmental informants demonstrate that although the system had a role in detecting Ebola in Liberia, it could not respond effectively to control th …

Patient recommendations for reducing long-lasting economic burden after breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, patients who have breast cancer experience significant economic burden compared with those who have other types of cancers. Cancer-related economic burden is exacerbated by adverse treatment effects. Strategies to resolve the economic burden caused by breast cancer and its adverse treatment effects have stemmed from the perspectives of health care providers, oncology navigators, and other subject-matter experts. For the current study, patient-driven recommendations were elicited to reduce economic burden after 1) breast cancer and 2) breast cancer-related lymp

Family-related correlates of sexually transmitted disease and barriers to care: a pilot study of pregnant African American adolescents.

This study explored associations between family-related measures and sexually transmitted disease (STD) history among 170 pregnant African American adolescent females, 14 to 20 years of age, attending prenatal care clinics in a large urban area of the South. Measures of low family support and infrequent mother-daughter communication were significant bivariate correlates of having at least one STD. Mother-daughter communication about preventing acquired immune deficiency syndrome remained significant in a multivariate model. The study also explored barriers to STD care-seeking behavior and foun
