A human hematoxylin-stainable protein (HSP) was extracted from the massive stratum corneum of epidermal cysts. AIM: Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules and enables the number of surgical operations to be reduced. Theoretically, FNAB should be carried out on all nodules, though currently only those displaying certain characteristics are biopsied. Indeed, to perform FNAB on all nodules may be regarded as an excess of zeal. Therefore, it seems advisable that the endocrinologist should be able to confirm on the spot the necessity and utility of FNAB.

In order to study the possible correlation between carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cellular proliferation, we assayed the concentrations of this substance in the fluid of 77 bening macrocysts of the breast classified according to their Na+/K+ ratio and compared them with those of transforming growth factor beta 2. CEA levels correlated positively and significantly with the cationic ratio, the concentrations of albumin, glucose, Cl- and pH and were higher (range: 2.5-81.5, median 12.8 vs range: 0.4-41.5, median 3.2 ng/ml (p: 0.00000) in type 2 (Na+/K+ > 3) than in type 1 (Na+/K+ < 3) cysts.

Ovarian follicle steroidogenesis associated with embryo quality results in a successful pregnancy. Each follicle consists of an oocyte surrounded by granulosa cells, which secrete several steroid and peptide hormones. Follicles harvested from women who conceived after assisted reproductive therapy (ART) had significantly higher estradiol levels in follicular fluids than the follicles from women who failed to conceive after ART. The higher follicular estradiol levels correlate well with successful fertilization following ART. Mitochondria are the central sites for steroid hormone biosynthesis.
