Opinion on the re-evaluation of pectin (E 440i) and amidated pectin (E 440ii) as food additives in foods for infants below 16 weeks of age and follow-up of their re-evaluation as food additives for uses in foods for all population groups.

Pectin (E 440i) and amidated pectin (E 440ii) were re-evaluated in 2017 by the former EFSA Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient sources added to Food (ANS). As a follow-up to this assessment, the Panel on Food Additives and Flavourings (FAF) was requested to assess the safety of pectins (E 440i,ii) for their uses as food additives in food for infants below 16 weeks of age. In addition, the FAF Panel was requested to address the issues already identified during the re-evaluation of the same food additive. The process involved the publication of a call for data to allow the interested business o

Using participatory methods to develop context-specific local government actions to create healthy food and physical activity environments for school-aged children: a case study in Flanders.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood overweight and obesity represent major public health concerns globally, influenced by food and physical activity environments. In the absence of strong national or regional policies, there has been an increasing interest from local government jurisdictions to address obesity. This study aimed to apply three distinct participatory methods to engage different community groups in a medium size, socio-economically deprived municipality in Flanders (Belgium), to identify context-specific barriers and facilitators to healthy eating and physical activity from the perspective o

Transit bus access to healthy, affordable food: A novel geographic information system (GIS) and community-informed analysis.

Good nutrition reduces the risk of chronic disease, but many vulnerable populations do not have equitable access to healthy food. People who are lower-income, non-White, older, or disabled, have increased likelihood of not owning a vehicle and of being dependent on public buses to source healthy, affordable food. Our study took place in three municipalities targeted by the Rhode Island Department of Health for equity-focused interventions. Our methodology aimed to overcome limitations of prior analyses of public transit food access. We determined healthy food sources, stratifying their afforda

Application of bacteriophages in the prevention of Bacillus cereus infection in potatoes.

BACKGROUND: The main component of potatoes is starch, which can serve as an easy breeding ground for Bacillus cereus during storage. This can decrease the shelf life of potatoes and pose food safety issues. METHODS: This study isolated several strains of B. cereus from rotten potatoes in the market as well as one of their bacteriophages, Bacillus phage PHZU0001, from municipal sewage. The genome of Bacillus phage PHZU0001 was sequenced. The phage sensitivity to eight B. cereus strains was detected using plaque assay. Stability assays assessed the phage's thermal and pH tolerance. RESULTS: Th

Reconstructing food colorants via synthetic biology: From microbial cell factories to sustainable biomanufacturing supply chains.

Food colorants constitute a critical segment of the global food industry, with an anticipated market valuation of USD 36.58 billion by 2030. Mounting safety apprehensions regarding synthetic dyes, illustrated by the recent ban on FD&C Red No. 3, have intensified the pursuit of sustainable natural substitutes. Concurrently, progress in synthetic biology and metabolic engineering has established microbial cell factories as a revolutionary system for the environmentally benign, large-scale production of these colorants. This review focuses on the microbial synthesis of food colorants in the three

Computation-aided hapten design for highly specific monoclonal antibody and one-step immunochromatographic assay of indomethacin in food and environment.

Indomethacin (IDM) poses significant safety concerns due to its illegal addition to food and notable environmental persistence. Consequently, there is an urgent need to establish efficient and rapid detection methods applicable to both food and environmental samples. In this study, guided by the analysis and prediction of IDM's characteristic functional groups, a highly specific monoclonal antibody against IDM was generated, showing an IC50 value of 0.68 ng/mL and cross-reactivity rates below 1.30 % with structural analogues. The recognition mechanism of IDM was further elucidated using homolo

Determination of acrylamide levels in chips/crisps on the Italian market and exposure risk assessment.

Acrylamide is an important concern in the food industry because it can form during cooking at high temperatures of foods, mainly of vegetable origin, and rich in carbohydrates. In this study, we detected the acrylamide levels in chips/crisps from five brands available on the Italian market and performed the risk assessment related to the exposure to acrylamide through the consumption of chips/crisps. A total of 50 samples were prepared and the acrylamide levels were determined by HPLC. The mean acrylamide value was 1116.6 ± 585 μg/kg, and two out of five brands showed higher values. EDI values

Does childhood obesity foreshadow a future time-bomb of early and more aggressive cancers?

There has been a global explosion in the prevalence of childhood obesity with 20% of children worldwide now growing up with excess weight and, despite many calls for interventions to redress the costs to health and society, rates continue to rise. It has also recently been observed that there is a global trend with the incidence of early-onset cancers, diagnoses prior to age 50, increasing. We outline the different lines of evidence implicating that these two trends may be linked. Conclusive proof will only be obtained when longitudinal studies, initiated after the current surge in childhood o

Technological and health properties and main challenges in the production of vegetable beverages and dairy analogs.

Lactose intolerance affects about 68-70% of the world population and bovine whey protein is associated with allergic reactions, especially in children. Furthermore, many people do not consume dairy-based foods due to the presence of cholesterol and ethical, philosophical and environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and social and religious beliefs. In this context, the market for beverages based on pulses, oilseeds, cereals, pseudocereals and seeds and products that mimic dairy foods showed a significant increase over the years. However, there are still many sensory, nutritional, and technolo

Probiotics: Versatile Bioactive Components in Promoting Human Health.

The positive impact of probiotic strains on human health has become more evident than ever before. Often delivered through food, dietary products, supplements, and drugs, different legislations for safety and efficacy issues have been prepared. Furthermore, regulatory agencies have addressed various approaches toward these products, whether they authorize claims mentioning a disease's diagnosis, prevention, or treatment. Due to the diversity of bacteria and yeast strains, strict approaches have been designed to assess for side effects and post-market surveillance. One of the most essential del

Bisphenol S in Food Causes Hormonal and Obesogenic Effects Comparable to or Worse than Bisphenol A: A Literature Review.

In recent years, bisphenol analogues such as bisphenol S (BPS) have come to replace bisphenol A in food packaging and food containers, since bisphenol A (BPA) has been shown to leach into food and water, causing numerous negative health effects. Unfortunately, little or no research was done to determine the safety of these BPA-free products before they were marketed to the public as a healthier alternative. The latest studies have shown that some of these bisphenol analogues may be even more harmful than the original BPA in some situations. This article used a literature survey to investigate

Value-added utilization of undersized Paralichthys olivaceus through enzymatic hydrolysis: Fish protein supports recovery of muscle strength in age-related muscle loss!

Globally, rising sea temperatures and intensive aquaculture practices are leading to an increase in small Paralichthys olivaceus (< 500 g; sPO) that are not utilized in standard markets. Despite their high nutritional density, their small size and lower fillet yields (50 % in large vs. 40 % in small fish) reduce marketability, and they are primarily used in low-value applications such as feed and fishmeal. This study aimed to develop a high-value protein hydrolysate (sPOppH) with muscle-enhancing properties using a combined enzymatic hydrolysis process utilizing these low-marketability small P
