Accentuated viral exanthems in areas of inflammation.

Types of lesions and patterns of distribution aid in the recognition of viral exanthems. Varicella and hand-foot-and-mouth disease can appear atypically in areas of inflammation. We describe 5 cases of morphologically altered exanthems that localized early and preferentially to areas of inflammation.

Mycetoma due to Madurella grisea acquired in Mexico.

Mycetomas due to Madurella grisea have been reported from South America, Central America, the Caribbean Islands, Africa and Asia, but only rarely from Mexico. We report a case of mycetoma due to M. grisea acquired in northern Mexico

[Acropathia ulcero-mutilans non familiaris (Bureau-Barrière). (Case report with special reference to the x-ray findings) (author's transl)].

Four cases of non-familiar acropathia ulcero-mutilans (Bureau-Barriere) are described. In all cases there was a history of alcoholism, abnormal liver function, painless foot ulcers and polyneuritis. The radiological changes were confined to the lower extremities. There were osteolytic changes in the metatarsal heads and the bases of the proximal phalanges, particularly of the great toes; in addition, there was general demineralisation of the bones of the feet. One case was remarkable in that the tarsal bones and the proximal protions of the metatarsals were also involved. A variety of bone def

Pediatric COVID toes and fingers.

The emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) worldwide pandemic has been associated with a new constellation of cutaneous features in children. Among the unusual dermatologic presentations are the so-called COVID toes, inflammatory nodules of the feet and toes, sometimes involving the hands and fingers. These lesions mimic acral pernio, the synonym being chilblains. Unlike adult patients with COVID toes, children are less likely to manifest symptomatic COVID-19. Although a few studies have found some linkage to COVID-19 through the serum IgA or IgG severe acute respiratory syndrome

Dermoscopic features of digital mucous cysts: A study of 23 cases.

Digital mucous cysts (DMC) are common benign myxoid cysts typically located on the fingers and toes. Recently, dermoscopic patterns of DMC were reported. However, only a small number of cases were described in the published work; therefore, information on this topic is scarce in the published work. We investigated dermoscopic patterns of histopathologically diagnosed DMC. In total, 23 cases were enrolled in this study. Polarized dermoscopy revealed vascular patterns in 13 cases (56.5%), with arborizing vascular patterns, dotted vessels, linear vessels and polymorphous vessels in eight (34.8%),

Laser therapy of onychomycosis.

Since 2010 the FDA has approved laser systems as capable of producing a "temporary increase in clear nails" in patients with onychomycosis. Fungal eradication is probably mediated by heat in infrared laser systems; their efficacy has been confirmed thermographically, histologically and in electron microscopy. Another approach to decontaminate the nail organ is to disrupt fungi and spores by q-switched pulse applications. Recently specific combinations of wavelengths have been tested for their ability to disrupt the mitochondrial transmembrane potential at physiological temperatures by generati

Epidemiological aspects of patients with ungual and cutaneous lesions caused by Scytalidium spp.

BACKGROUND: Dermatomycoses caused by non-dermatophyte filamentous fungi are rare infections, except for onychomycosis, whose prevalence has increased over the past few years. Among these etiologic agents, we highlight Scytalidium dimidiatum and S. hyalinum, emergent fungi that cause mycoses that affect the nails and skin. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics of onychomycosis and other mycoses caused by the fungi Scytalidium spp, using sex, age and site of infection as parameters. METHODS: Eighty-one samples were evaluated showing positive culture for Scytalidium spp, obtained from 7

Medically important fungi found in hallux nails of university students from Cali, Colombia.

The presence of medically important fungi was studied in hallux nails scrapings obtained from 504 students (204 males, 300 females) of three universities in Cali. Specimens were examined by direct microscopic examination and fungal culture. Medically important fungi were found in 49 (9.7%) students, 24 (4.8%) had onychomycosis while the rest did not have nail lesions. Trichophyton rubrum was the most commonly isolated fungi in students with lesions, where as T. mentagrophytes predominated in healthy nails. Most of the students with fungi were males. The prevalence of fungi was higher in indivi

Syphilis in adults.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease with protean manifestations resulting from infection by Treponema pallidum. It is systemic early from the outset, the primary pathology being vasculitis. Acquired syphilis can be divided into primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary stages. The infection can also be transmitted vertically resulting in congenital syphilis, and occasionally by blood transfusion and non-sexual contact. Diagnosis is mainly by dark field microscopy in early syphilis and by serological tests. The management in the tropics depends on the diagnostic facilities available: in r

Renal manifestation of pustulosis palmaris et plantaris.

Diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis without IgA deposits (DPGN) in patients with pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP) is described. This association has not been previously reported. Although PPP was resolved transiently after tonsillectomy, it was worsened coincidently at the time of exacerbation of DPGN. Improvement of proteinuria and PPP was observed after antiplatelet therapy. It was suggested that the renal manifestation and the development of PPP were associated.
