BACKGROUND: One of the most frequent reasons for total knee arthroplasty late failure is osteolysis. It has been related to foreign body reaction to polyethylene particles. The aim of this study is to analyse the number, size and morphology of polyethylene particles in synovial fluid in total knee arthroplasty revision and correlate them to the pathology and the degree of osteolysis.

Gossypiboma is defined as a mass caused by foreign body reaction developed around the retained surgical item in the operative area. When diagnosed, it should be removed in symptomatic patients. Minimal invasive surgery should be planned for the removal of the retained item. The number of cases treated by laparoscopic approach is rare in the literature. We present a case of forty-year-old woman referred to emergency room with acute abdomen diagnosed as gossypiboma and treated successfully with laparoscopic surgery.

A case report of a recurrent mucous extravasation phenomenon in the anterior lingual gland is presented. Multiple surgical procedures were necessary to eradicate the lesion. Alginate impression material was used during one of the surgical procedures to aid in defining the margins of the lesion. A foreign-body reaction arose in the tongue as a result of residual alginate within the tissues, necessitating further surgery. The use of this technique cannot be recommended in areas where extension into surrounding tissue planes is possible.

A common cause of malfunctioning ventricular shunts is the occlusion of either tip by a variety of normal or reactive tissues and foreign substances. A six-year-old girl with communicating hydrocephalus and a meningomyelocele, a 48-year-old man with an ependymoma and an 11-year-old boy with a pineal germinoma had multinucleated histiocytic giant cells and ependymal cells in cerebrospinal fluid obtained from their ventricular shunts. With the increasing application of hyaluronic acid injection, the complications are gradually increasing. Fillers are implants, and essentially foreign bodies, and filler injection is a blind procedure in which the physician is unable to see exactly where the material is placed. With these characteristics, injectable fillers have the potential for a myriad of complications. During this case, we found that with the correct diagnosis of filler migration and hypersensitivity reactions and injecting hyaluronidase immediately, good clinical results can be obtained.

Hematic cyst of the orbit has been described in association with various diseases, but its pathogenetic mechanism remains unclear. We treated two patients (two men, 38 and 35 years old) who had growing cysts suspected of being malignant tumors. Surgical exploration of the orbits disclosed birefringent crystals (hematodin) either in the cyst wall or in the cyst's contents. The crystals imitated foreign bodies in their appearance and in the reactions they induced.

We present a 32-year-old man with successful treatment and remission of mycosis fungoides of both axillae in 2016 after PUVA therapy and systemic and local administration of corticosteroids. PURPOSE: To evaluate a keratoprosthesis, implanted by penetrating keratoplasty, in rabbits.
METHODS: We implanted our keratoprosthesis (optics and flange portions of polymethylmethacrylate and a polyurethane skirt with micropores) into 14 eyes of 14 rabbits. In four eyes, we evaluated histologically the junction between the keratoprosthesis and host cornea. Long-term keratoprosthesis survival was evaluated in ten eyes by slit-lamp biomicroscopy.
