Mercury trophic transfer to a freshwater biosentinel: quantifying controlled bioaccumulation in larval dragonflies.

Mercury bioavailability and biomagnification in freshwater systems can be highly variable; thus, tissue data from biosentinel taxa can be useful to assess risk. Dragonfly larvae have emerged as biological indicators of mercury impairment, yet their mercury biodynamics over time and across exposure levels are not well understood. Evaluating these attributes using controlled experimental approaches is an important step to validate larval dragonflies as biosentinels for spatial and temporal trends in mercury risk. We conducted an experimental series quantifying methylmercury trophic transfer from

Genotoxicity and metabolic changes induced via ingestion of virgin and UV-aged polyethylene microplastics by the freshwater fish Perca fluviatilis.

The present study aims to compare and assess the toxicity induced by aged (irradiated with ultraviolet radiation for 120 days) polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) in comparison to virgin (non-irradiated) ones, after feeding the freshwater fish Perca fluviatilis. To this end, MPs mediated genotoxicity was assessed by the investigation of micronucleus nuclear abnormalities frequency in fish blood, and the degree of DNA damage in the liver and muscle tissues, while metabolic alterations were also recorded in both tissues. Results showed that both virgin and aged PE-MPs induced signaling pathways

Assessing the Toxicity of Sea Salt to Early Life Stages of Freshwater Mussels: Implications for Sea Level Rise in Coastal Rivers.

Sea levels across the planet are rising, particularly along the eastern coast of the United States. Climate-induced sea level rise can result in the inundation and intrusion of seawater into freshwater drainages. This would alter salinity regimes and lead to the salinization of coastal freshwater ecosystems. Increased salinity levels in freshwater can negatively affect freshwater-dependent species, including native mussels belonging to the order Unionida, which are highly sensitive to changes in water quality. Sea salt is largely made up of sodium and chloride ions, forming sodium chloride, a

Effects of the anxiolytic benzodiazepine oxazepam on freshwater gastropod reproduction: a prospective study.

Psychoactive drugs have emerged as contaminants over the last few decades. These drugs are frequently prescribed and poorly eliminated by wastewater treatment plants, and many are present at non-negligible concentrations in surface waters. Several studies have investigated the non-target organism toxicity of one such drug, oxazepam, a benzodiazepine anxiolytic frequently detected in rivers. However, very little is known about the impact of this drug on reproduction. We investigated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of oxazepam on Radix balthica, a freshwater gastropod wide

A Review of Freshwater Invertebrates as Biomonitors of Methylmercury: the Importance of More Complete Physical and Chemical Reporting.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a toxic and bioaccumulative organo-metallic compound that is naturally produced in many ecosystems. Organisms that occupy the lower trophic positions in food webs may be key factors in the assessment of MeHg biomagnification between ecosystems. Here we present a review of the peer-reviewed literature examining MeHg bioaccumulation in freshwater invertebrates, focused principally on insects. This review aims to characterize the invertebrates that bioaccumulate higher MeHg concentrations and therefore pose a higher risk to upper trophic levels and to clarify which ecosyst

Epitheliocystis in fish: An emerging aquaculture disease with a global impact.

Epitheliocystis is a skin and gill disease in fish caused by pathogenic intracellular bacteria. The disease has been reported in at least 90 species of marine and freshwater fish in both the southern and northern hemispheres. It affects a number of commercially important aquaculture species, including salmon, kingfish and bream. In infected fish, cysts typically develop in the gill epithelia, promoting the fusion of gill lamellae. Infections can lead to respiratory distress and death, particularly in cultured and juvenile fish with cases rarely reported in wild fish. Modern molecular technique

The effects of aquaculture on mercury distribution, changing speciation, and bioaccumulation in a reservoir ecosystem.

A survey was conducted in a freshwater reservoir located in Guizhou province, south China, to investigate the influence of fish aquaculture activities on mercury (Hg) distribution, speciation change, and bioaccumulation. Water, sediment, and aquaculture fish samples were collected from aquaculture sites (AS) and the corresponding reference sites (RS). The results showed that total mercury (THg) concentration in overlying water in Wujiangdu reservoir reached 6.87 ± 14.9 ng L-1. THg concentration in a different layer follows the sequence: surface layer > bottom layer > three intermediate layers

Critical nutrient thresholds needed to control eutrophication and synergistic interactions between phosphorus and different nitrogen sources.

Eutrophication is one of the greatest threats to global freshwater ecosystems. The phytoplankton responses to nutrient inputs vary in different water bodies, so it is particularly important to determine the nutrient thresholds and synergistic interactions between nutrients in different freshwater ecosystems. Field sampling and bioassay experiments were conducted to determine the thresholds of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N), and ammonium-nitrogen (NH4-N) in Miyun Reservoir. A separate nutrient addition bioassay was designed to assess the synergistic interactions bet

Direct and indirect effects of copper-contaminated sediments on the functions of model freshwater ecosystems.

Copper is acutely toxic to, and directly affects, primary producers and decomposers, which are key players in essential processes such as the nutrient cycle in freshwater ecosystems. Even though the indirect effects of metals (for example effects due to changes in species interactions) may be more common than direct effects, little is known about the indirect effects of copper on primary producers and decomposers. The effects of copper on phytoplankton, macrophytes, periphyton and organic matter decomposition in an outdoor lentic mesocosm facility were assessed, and links between the responses

Assessment of dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction for the simultaneous extraction, preconcentration, and derivatization of Hg2+ and CH3Hg+ for further determination by GC-MS.

This work reports the development of a dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method for the simultaneous extraction, preconcentration, and derivatization of Hg(2+) and CH3Hg(+) species from water samples for further determination by GC-MS. Some parameters of the proposed method, such as volume and type of disperser and extraction solvent, and Na[B(C6H5)4] concentration were investigated using response surface methodology. Suitable recoveries were obtained using 80 μL C2 Cl4 (as extraction solvent), 1000 μL ethanol (as disperser solvent), and 300 μL 2.1 mmol/L Na[B(C6H5)4] (as derivatizing a

Climate induced thermocline change has an effect on the methyl mercury cycle in small boreal lakes.

We conducted a whole-lake experiment by manipulating the stratification pattern (thermocline depth) of a small polyhumic, boreal lake (Halsjärvi) in southern Finland and studying the impacts on lake mercury chemistry. The experimental lake was compared to a nearby reference site (Valkea-Kotinen Lake). During the first phase of the experiment the thermocline of Halsjärvi was lowered in order to simulate the estimated increase in wind speed and in total lake heat content (high-change climate scenario). The rate of methyl mercury (MeHg) production during summer stagnation (May-August) was calcula

Fungicides and herbicide removal in Scenedesmus cell suspensions.

Remediation capacities of two freshwater microalgae, Scenedesmus obliquus and Scenedesmus quadricauda, were assessed for the removal of two fungicides (dimethomorph and pyrimethanil) and one herbicide (isoproturon) from their medium. To ensure these studies were performed with healthy algae, pesticide effects where first apprehended on chlorophyll a fluorescence emission and growth rate. After a 4d-exposure to 600 microg L(-1) of dimethomorph or pyrimethanil, or to 10 microg L(-1) of isoproturon, algal growth rate and some of their photosynthetic processes were weakly affected (< 30% variation

Trichloroethylene uptake into fruits and vegetables: three-year field monitoring study.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) contaminated groundwater migrating into communities surrounding Hill Air Force Base (HAFB) in northern Utah prompted a multiyear monitoring program (2001-2003) to examine the extent of TCE uptake and transfer into edible fruits. During the initial sampling in fall 2001, TCE was detected in a small fraction of the 167 fruit and tree core samples collected from 17 private residences. Samples were analyzed using headspace gas chromatography (GC) with electron capture detection (ECD) with limited confirmation by mass spectrometry (MS) in selected ion monitoring mode. In fal

Baseline concentrations of ten metals in the freshwater sediments of a watershed in Taiwan.

Freshwater sediments and water samples were quarterly collected at different sampling stations from August 1996 to April 1998 in the Fei-Tsui reservoir watershed (FTRW) of northern Taiwan. The sediment and soil samples were digested using mixture of inorganic acids to analyze the total concentration of ten metals. The baseline concentrations of ten metals in the sediments of FTRW were calculated from the geometric mean (GM) values and the geometric standard deviation (GSD). The baseline concentrations of 10 metals in the 239 sediments of this watershed are listed as followings (mg/kg, only % f

Sources of salinity in ground water from Jericho area, Jordan Valley.

One of the major problems in the lower Jordan Valley is the increasing salinization (i.e., chloride content) of local ground water. The high levels of salinity limit the utilization of ground water for both domestic and agriculture applications. This joint collaborative study evaluates the sources and mechanisms for salinization in the Jericho area. We employ diagnostic geochemical fingerprinting methods to trace the potential sources of the salinity in (1) the deep confined subaquifer system (K2) of Lower Cenomanian age; (2) the upper subaquifer system (K1) of Upper Cenomanian and Turonian ag

Critical loads of acidity for surface waters in China.

For further control of acid rain and sulphur dioxide pollution, the Chinese government has designated the Acid Rain Control Zone and the Sulphur Dioxide Pollution Control Zone for those areas that are, or could become, affected by acid deposition or ambient sulphur dioxide concentrations. One of the most important principles for designating the Acid Rain Control Zone is that the critical load is exceeded by the sulphur deposition. Through the steady-state water chemistry method (SSWC), critical loads of acidity for surface waters were mapped based on available data. Results show that surface w

Relationships between branchial chloride cells and gas transfer in freshwater fish.

The gill lamellar epithelium is composed of two predominant cell types, pavement cells and mitochondria-rich chloride cells. The chloride cells play a vital role in ionic regulation because they are the sites of Ca2+ and Cl- uptake from water. Consequently, lamellar chloride cell proliferation occurs in response to ionoregulatory challenges so as to increase the ion-transporting capacity of the gill. It has been argued that such chloride cell proliferation might increase the thickness of the blood-to-water diffusion barrier and thereby impede gas diffusion. This review focuses on the potential
