Sediments are important in regulating the algae-derived off-flavor (β-cyclocitral) in eutrophic lakes.

In recent years, due to global warming and water eutrophication, cyanobacterial blooms have occurred frequently worldwide, resulting in a series of water quality problems, among which the odor problem in lakes is one of the focuses of attention. In the late stage of the bloom, a large amount of algae accumulated on the surface sediment, which will be a great hidden danger to cause odor pollution in lakes. β-Cyclocitral is one of the typical algae-derived odor compounds that cause odor in lakes. In this study, an annual survey of 13 eutrophic lakes in the Taihu Lake basin was investigated to as

Suspended phosphorus sustains algal blooms in a dissolved phosphorus-depleted lake.

The expansion of algal bloom in surface waters is a global problem in the freshwater ecosystem. Differential reactivity of organic phosphorus (Po) compounds from organic debris, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment towards hydrolysis can dictate the extent of supply often limited inorganic P (Pi) for algal growth, thereby controlling the extent of bloom. Here, we combined solution P-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (31P NMR), sequential extraction, enzymatic hydrolysis, and 16S rRNA measurements to characterize speciation and biogeochemical cycling of P in Lake Erhai, China. Lower rat

Depth-dependent microbial communities potentially mediating mercury methylation and various geochemical processes in anthropogenically affected sediments.

Metal contamination and other geochemical alterations affect microbial composition and functional activities, disturbing natural biogeochemical cycles. Therefore, it is essential to understand the influences of multi-metal and geochemical interactions on microbial communities. This work investigated the distributions of total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), and trace metals in the anthropogenically affected sediment. The microbial communities and functional genes profiles were further determined to explore their association with Hg-methylation and geochemical features. The levels of THg a

Matrix in River Water, Sediments, and Biofilms Mitigates Mercury Toxicity to Medaka (Oryzias Latipes).

Impacts of an environmental matrix on mercury (Hg) bioavailability and toxicity to medaka (Oryzias latipes) were investigated in matrix-free controls and treatments with a stepwise increased environmental matrix of river water, sediments, and biofilms. Generally, river water enhanced but the presence of sediments and biofilms reduced Hg bioavailability to medaka up to 105 times, so that Hgtotal concentrations/amounts among different environmental media cannot mirror Hg availability and toxicity to medaka. On average, 12.9 and 12.4% of Hg in medaka was, respectively, methylated to methylmercury

Risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon infested sediments along the coast of Goa, India.

Goa, a small state in India, is a tourist hotspot known for its coastline and beaches. Anthropogenic activities lead to pollution in the environment. Amongst many other pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons represent a major class of contaminants owing to their widespread distribution and protracted environmental persistence. No information is available about the levels of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination in the sediments along the coastline of Goa. The study aimed to establish a baseline for PAH concentrations in the sediments along the shoreline to help comment on t

Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal mechanism underlying higher resistance of the marine oligochaete Thalassodrilides cf. briani (Clitellata: Naididae) to heavy contamination of sediments with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

In some coastal areas, sediments are contaminated with various chemical compounds, causing significant threats to marine organisms. Therefore, the development of remediation techniques is important. Here, we focused on bioremediation using marine benthic animals such as aquatic oligochaetes. The oligochaete Thalassodrilides cf. briani is highly resistant to contamination of sediments with toxic chemicals. We examined whether T. cf. briani could decompose high-concentration polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments. Furthermore, relevant genes expressed in T. cf. briani exposed to co

Metal fluxes at the sediment-water interface in a free water surface constructed wetland.

Metal biogeochemistry in the sediment, water, and the sediment-water interface (SWI) was studied in a free water surface constructed wetland. Concentrations of labile copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), sulfate, chloride, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured with the diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT) and peeper. A good agreement between peeper- and DGT-measured metals was observed for Cu (regression r2 = 0.3, 95% CI of the slopes > 0), but not for Zn (95% CI of the slopes overlapped with 0), which was attributed to the different complexed compounds between Cu and Zn in porewater. The dept

Adsorption and immobilization of phosphorus from eutrophic seawater and sediment using attapulgite - Behavior and mechanism.

The adsorption behavior of phosphorus on raw sediment (RS), attapulgite (AT), purified attapulgite (PAT) and AT/PAT-amended sediments conforms to the Langmuir, pseudo first-order kinetics and liquid film diffusion model. The adsorption process is spontaneous and monolayer adsorption, and the adsorption rate is mainly controlled by liquid film diffusion. The addition of attapulgite improved the adsorption capacity of phosphorus in the sediments of mariculture ponds. The results of long-term sediment core incubation showed that the average reduction rates of total phosphorus (TP) and soluble rea

Arsenate decreases production of methylmercury across increasing sulfate concentration amendments in freshwater lake sediments.

Arsenic (As) and sulfate pollution are often found co-occurring as a result of smelting metal ores. Previous studies showed that sulfate reducing microbes (SRMs) can use As(V) as a terminal electron acceptor, while others reported that SRMs are the main mercury (Hg) methylators in freshwater systems. However, we have yet to fully explore how As(V) can affect methylmercury (MeHg) production. In this study, we examined whether additions of As(V) and sulfate in freshwater sediments collected near a major gold mine with a history of S and As emissions affect Hg methylation. First, we show that Hg

Natural radioactivity and element characterization in pit lakes in Northern Sweden.

Northern Sweden has been the object of intense metal mining in the last decades producing several water-filled open-pits, or pit lakes. Most of these pit lakes have been limed to maintain a good water quality and to prevent generation of acidic water that could leach the exposed rocks and release metals into water. The aim of this work was to examine the concentration of stable elements and naturally occurring radionuclides in water and sediment samples from pit lakes originating from non-uranium mining activities in Northern Sweden. Surface water and surface sediments were collected from 27 p

Efficient and Complete Detoxification of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Sediments Achieved by Bioaugmentation with Dehalococcoides and Microbial Ecological Insights.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are prevalent environmental pollutants, but bioremediation of PBDEs remains to be reported. Here we report accelerated remediation of a penta-BDE mixture in sediments by bioaugmentation with Dehalococcoides mccartyi strains CG1 and TZ50. Bioaugmentation with different amounts of each Dehalococcoides strain enhanced debromination of penta-BDEs compared with the controls. The sediment microcosm spiked with 6.8 × 106 cells/mL strain CG1 showed the highest penta-BDEs removal (89.9 ± 7.3%) to diphenyl ether within 60 days. Interestingly, co-contaminant tetrach

Microbial community compositions and sulfate-reducing bacterial profiles in malodorous urban canal sediments.

Anthropogenically impacted urban canals represent distinct freshwater ecosystems that could shape microbial communities in underlying sediments; however, knowledge of the relationships between environmental factors and microbial community compositions and their functions in such an environment is limited. This study characterized the microbial community compositions of malodorous canal sediments at six locations along the Saen Saep Canal in Thailand. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing (MiSeq, Illumina) revealed dominant genera classified as fermentative bacteria, methanogens, and sulfate-reduci

Effects of elevated sulfate in eutrophic waters on the internal phosphate release under oxic conditions across the sediment-water interface.

Eutrophication in freshwater environments may be enhanced by the elevation of sulfate in waters, through the release of internal phosphorus (P) from anoxic sediments. However, the influence of increasing but modest sulfate concentrations (less than 3000 μM) on P release under oxic conditions across the sediment-water interface (SWI) in eutrophic freshwater is poorly understood. In this study, the profiles of P, iron (Fe), sulfur (S) and physicochemical parameters were measured in a simulated lacustrine system with varying concentrations of sulfate (970-2600 μM) in overlying water. The results

A holistic understanding of cobalt cycling and limiting roles in the eutrophic Lake Taihu.

Cobalt (Co) cycling is often dominated by its role as a micronutrient in marine, while little is known on its cycling in a shallow eutrophic lake. Monthly sampling was performed in eutrophic Meiliang Bay of Lake Taihu, combining two laboratory control experiments and in situ Co limitation bioassay experiments. The high-resolution dialysis and the diffusive gradients in thin films technique were used to detect dissolved and labile Co, respectively. The positive correlations between dissolved/labile Co and Mn in the sediments for 6 or 7 months demonstrated that the mobility of Co in the sediment

Fulvic acid: A key factor governing mercury bioavailability in a polluted plateau wetland.

Fulvic acids (FAs) are known to regulate the fate of mercury (Hg) in sediments, but the key effects of their properties are still unclear. In this study, field investigations and simulation experiments were conducted in a heavy metal-polluted wetland to identify FA characteristics and their association with the production and bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg). Compared to permanently inundated areas (PIA), seasonally inundated areas (SIAs) had lower total Hg levels in sediments, whereas higher MeHg levels in sediments (0.20 ± 0.09 ng g-1 vs. 0.55 ± 0.31 ng g-1) and benthos (0.25 ± 0.22 n

Fluid-rich subducting topography generates anomalous forearc porosity.

The role of subducting topography on the mode of fault slip-particularly whether it hinders or facilitates large megathrust earthquakes-remains a controversial topic in subduction dynamics1-5. Models have illustrated the potential for subducting topography to severely alter the structure, stress state and mechanics of subduction zones4,6; however, direct geophysical imaging of the complex fracture networks proposed and the hydrology of both the subducting topography and the associated upper plate damage zones remains elusive. Here we use passive and controlled-source seafloor electromagnetic d

Enrichment of antibiotics in an inland lake water.

Inland water is very susceptible to the input of pollutants. However, little is known about the occurrence of antibiotics in inland lakes. In this study, a total of 83 target antibiotics were quantified in water and sediment samples collected from the Qinghai Lake, the largest inland lake of China located on the northeast of Qinghai-Tibet plateau, and its inflowing rivers. The results showed that 27 and 25 antibiotics were detected in water and sediments, respectively, with the summed concentrations (SUM) of 1.14-17.3 ng/L and 0.72-8.31 ng/g. Compared with the input rivers, significantly highe

Modeling transport of antibiotic resistant bacteria in aquatic environment using stochastic differential equations.

Contaminated sites are recognized as the "hotspot" for the development and spread of antibiotic resistance in environmental bacteria. It is very challenging to understand mechanism of development of antibiotic resistance in polluted environment in the presence of different anthropogenic pollutants. Uncertainties in the environmental processes adds complexity to the development of resistance. This study attempts to develop mathematical model by using stochastic partial differential equations for the transport of fluoroquinolone and its resistant bacteria in riverine environment. Influence of microplastics on nutrients and metal concentrations in river sediments.

Microplastics pose threats to aquatic environments because they serve as hard-substrate for microbial community colonization and biofilm formation due to their long-life span and hydrophobic surface which can impact on aquatic ecosystems. However, the association between microplastics and other pollutants, particularly nutrients and metals in river sediments are largely unknown. In this study, microplastics abundance and hazard scores which are the risks arising from chemical compounds used for plastics manufacture, and the correlations between microplastics and the concentrations of total car
