Endoscopic vascular decompression of the trigeminal nerve.

BACKGROUND: Microvascular decompression is an effective method of treatment in trigeminal neuralgia. It may fail if a compressing vessel is overlooked during surgery. The endoscope has an edge over the microscope in visualizing such conflicts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective study of 51 patients. Preoperative computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans were performed in all the cases. A 4 − 5 cm retroauricular skin incision was made and an about 3 cm craniectomy was performed. A 0° 4 mm telescope supported by the holder was used after the dural opening. A 2 by 6 cm s

Closed hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy with open abdomen: a novel technique to reduce exposure of the surgical team to chemotherapy drugs.

BACKGROUND: Exposure of the surgical team to toxic drugs during hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) remains a matter of great concern. During closed-abdomen HIPEC, operating room staff are not exposed to drugs, but the distribution of the heated liquid within the abdomen is not optimal. With open-abdomen HIPEC, the opposite is true. Although the open-abdomen method is potentially more effective, it has not become a standard procedure because of the risk of exposure of members of the team to drugs. METHODS: We present a new technique (closed HIPEC with open abdomen) which ensures

Hepatitis E virus in Cuba: A cross-sectional serological and virological study in pigs and people occupationally exposed to pigs.

Surveillance of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in risk groups is an important strategy to monitor its circulation pattern and to timely detect changes thereof. The aims of this cross-sectional study were to estimate the prevalence of HEV infections in pigs and humans from different regions of the country, to identify risk factors for increasing anti-HEV IgG prevalence and to characterize HEV strains. The presence of anti-HEV antibodies was assessed by commercial ELISA in serum samples from the general population, farm and slaughterhouse employees, as well as pigs sampled in the three regions of Cuba

Role of hand disinfection of dentists in interrupting cross-transmission of infections in dental practice.

Introduction: It is mandatory to perform meticulous hygienic disinfection of dentists’ hands. Dental personnel unintentionally transfer microorganisms from the patient’s mouth to adjacent surfaces, and vice versa. Aim: The aim of the present study was to determine the presence of resident and transient skin microbiota on the hands of dentists after performing hygienic hand disinfection. Materials and methods: A prospective epidemiological and microbiological study was conducted among 60 dentists in Plovdiv from May to June 2025. A short survey was also administered to assess basic knowledge of

How to Manage Intraoperative Contamination.

UNLABELLED: Sterile technique is essential to protect patients and decrease the risk of surgical site infections. Despite efforts to maintain sterility, sterile breaches occur. Examples of such breaches include holes in surgical drapes, insects in the operating room, residual bioburden on surgical instruments, dropped grafts intraoperatively, and defective sterile tray wrappers. Intraoperative sterile breaches are stressful situations for the surgical team and require the surgeon to make quick decisions that have a large impact on the patient's infection risk and outcome. There is limited lite

A preliminary study of the thermal strain experienced by dive support boat personnel.

Anecdotal evidence indicated some British military dive support boat personnel suffer from uncomfortably cold hands and feet, which could impair their performance and be associated with reductions in core body temperature. This study collected preliminary data on thermal stress and cognitive performance of personnel taking part in a cold-weather training exercise. Six men were monitored during four boat transits in a range of climatic conditions (air temperature +1.2°C to -10.5°C, wind chill -4.5°C to 19.3°C). Core body temperature was measured with a radio pill and 12 skin sites (ISO 9886 plu

Retroperitoneal approach for robot living donor nephrectomy: A step-by-step description of technical nuances.

Open, pure or hand-assisted laparoscopic, natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgical (NOTES) and robotic approaches (Transperitoneal or retroperitoneal) are the described approaches for living donor nephrectomy. We describe the procedural steps of a robotic living donor nephrectomy (RLDN) retroperitoneal (RRLDN) technique using a da Vinci X surgical system and three robotic arms. This is the first reported case with the retroperitoneal robotic approach. The procedure in brief is as follows. First, with the patient placed in full flank position, the camera port is placed at the level of t

The impact of COVID-19 on Canadian child maltreatment workers.

As cases of child maltreatment become an increasing concern during the COVID-19 pandemic, the perspectives of those charged with protecting and supporting children and families is an important area of inquiry. We sought to examine the experiences of child maltreatment workers during the first wave of the pandemic (i.e., May-July 2020). We specifically aimed to examine child maltreatment experiences related to the following: (1) their work practices during the pandemic, (2) their perceived safety during the pandemic, and (3) their perceptions on the safety of the children and families with whom

Modelling of long-term retention of high-fired plutonium oxide in the human respiratory tract: importance of scar-tissue compartments.

The U.S. Transuranium and Uranium Registries whole-body tissue donor Case 0407 had an acute intake of 'high-fired' plutonium oxide resulting from a glove-box fire in a fabrication plant at a nuclear defence facility. The respiratory tract of this individual was dissected into five regions (larynx, bronchi, bronchioles, alveolar-interstitial, and thoracic lymph nodes) and analysed for plutonium content. The activities in certain compartments of the respiratory tract were found to be higher than expected from the default models described in publications of the International Commission on Radiolo

[Technique of intravitreal drug injection for therapy of vitreoretinal diseases].

Intravitreal injections are the standard technique applied in the treatment of some vitreoretinal diseases. In this paper the technique and complications of intravitreal injections are presented. In summary, the procedure involves various consecutive steps. Initially, days before the treatment topical antibiotics and acetazolamide may be prescribed for reduction of the ocular flora and intraocular pressure. Before the injection, the pupil should be dilated and topical anesthesia should be achieved. Injection shall be performed in the operating room under sterile conditions, the surgeon should

Trauma team utilization of universal precautions: if you see something, say something.

PURPOSE: The risks deriving from the lack of compliance with universal safety precautions (USPs) are unequivocal. However, the adoption of these prophylactic precautions by healthcare providers remains unacceptably low. We hypothesized that trauma teams are not routinely adhering to USPs and that a brief educational intervention, followed by real-time peer feedback, would substantially improve compliance rates. METHODS: This before-and-after interventional study took place in the resuscitation bay of a Level I Trauma Center during trauma team activations. Six USPs were examined: hand washing
