The affinity of a glycopeptide from culture filtrates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis for guinea-pig serum components, first observed as an alteration of electrophoretic mobility of γ2-immunoglobulin in agar has been explored by a variety of techniques. It was shown that such changes in mobility were produced more readily with γ2-globulin (Fraction I from DEAE cellulose chromatography) than with γ1-globulin (Fraction III from DEAE cellulose chromatography). It was estimated that the treatment resulted in a rise of carbohydrate associated with γ2-globulin from 1.3 per cent to 38–40 per cent.

Guinea-pig γ1- and γ2-globulins have been purified by preparative electrophoresis followed by chromatography. No γ1-globulin was detectable in purified γ2-globulin, but purified γ1-globulin always contained fast γ2-globulin. Normal guinea-pig serum contained much less γ1-globulin than immune serum. Antisera prepared against normal guinea-pig serum did not contain useful amounts of antibody specific for γ1-globulin. Guinea-pig lung tissue was sensitized by very low concentrations of guinea-pig γ1-globulin (of the order of 6×10-10 molar) but γ2-globulin antibodies were almost inactive. No eviden…

Complement fixing reactions were observed between normal guinea-pig serum and antigens prepared from flukes of the genus Fasciola. This activity did not require the presence of any other serum, and at the usual relative concentrations of antigen and serum, the guinea-pig serum was the limiting component. The effect therefore differs from a normal anticomplementary activity of the antigen, and was termed the autofixation effect. In the presence of a gross excess of the antigen, the autofixation effect was inhibited. The antigenic component concerned was demonstrated in preparations from both Fa…

The injection into the dorsal skin of a suspension of guinea pig testis or spermia incorporated in a water-in-oil emulsion containing killed mycobacteria induces aspermatogenesis in guinea pigs. The injury begins with the inhibition of the maturation of spermia and proceeds through the degeneration and exfoliation of spermatids, spermatocytes, and finally spermatogonia. These germinal cells pass from the seminiferous tubules into the epididymis. The process is not associated with inflammation. No significant changes occur in the intertubular spaces and the Leydig cells do not seem to be affect…
