Football protective gear and cervical spine imaging.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the effect of football protective gear on the cervical spine radiographic evaluation of adult male subjects. METHODS: The study used a prospective, randomized, matched-pairs, observational design. Subjects served as their own control subjects, with cross-table lateral and open-mouth odontoid cervical spine radiographs. Radiographs were obtained with protective head and shoulder equipment (pads group) and without protective equipment (no pads group). Two emergency physicians and 2 neuroradiologists reviewed study radiographs. Physicians assessed radiographi

Molding therapy of positional plagiocephaly: subjective outcome and quality of life.

To evaluate quality of life (QOL) and parental satisfaction in children diagnosed and treated with molding helmet therapy (MHT) for positional plagiocephaly, a retrospective chart research was performed on 166 children who had visited the craniofacial outpatient clinic in the University Hospital of Maastricht between 2002 and 2003. Two questionnaires were sent to parents of these children. The first was used to measure QOL (TAPQOL questionnaire) and was related to a healthy control group. The second evaluated parents' satisfaction concerning the shape of their children's head before and after

Assessment of Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques for Sagittal Craniosynostosis: A Multicenter Time Series Study.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive strip craniectomy is a well-established treatment for sagittal craniosynostosis; however, the temporality of change in head shape has not been assessed. In this study, the authors performed head shape analysis to compare time-series-based clinical outcomes among 3 different surgical techniques across 3 academic centers for the treatment of sagittal craniosynostosis. METHODS: Retrospective, longitudinal 3-dimensional (3D) images were collected from patients who underwent surgery for the correction of sagittal craniosynostosis for up to 5 years postoperation. The

Maxillofacial fractures associated with electric scooter trauma: a cohort study from a national level I trauma center.

PURPOSE: Electric scooters (e-scooters) have become a widely used mode of urban transportation, but their increasing popularity has been accompanied by a rise in trauma-related emergency department visits. Craniofacial injuries represent a particularly relevant subset due to the exposed riding position and the limited use of protective equipment. This study analyzed the epidemiological characteristics, fracture patterns, associated injuries, and treatment requirements of patients presenting with facial fractures after e-scooter accidents. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was condu

Intraoperative Ultrasound in Endoscopic Sagittal Suture Synostosis to Optimize Incision Planning and Avoid Misdiagnosis.

Endoscopy-assisted craniectomy with lateral osteotomies and postoperative helmet molding therapy is a widely used approach in managing sagittal suture craniosynostosis. Generally, the incisions are placed just posterior to the anterior fontanel and just anterior to the posterior fontanel and lambdoid sutures, and accurate incision placement optimizes the safe separation of the superior sagittal sinus. The authors present their 10 year experience with an ultrasound-assisted approach to identify the lambdoid sutures and precisely place the skin incisions. The authors included all patients in car

Using street imagery and crowdsourcing internet marketplaces to measure motorcycle helmet use in Bangkok, Thailand.

INTRODUCTION: The majority of Thailand's road traffic deaths occur on motorised two-wheeled or three-wheeled vehicles. Accurately measuring helmet use is important for the evaluation of new legislation and enforcement. Current methods for estimating helmet use involve roadside observation or surveillance of police and hospital records, both of which are time-consuming and costly. Our objective was to develop a novel method of estimating motorcycle helmet use. METHODS: Using Google Maps, 3000 intersections in Bangkok were selected at random. At each intersection, hyperlinks of four images 90°

Boxing-acute complications and late sequelae: from concussion to dementia.

BACKGROUND: Boxing has received increased public attention and acceptance in recent years. However, this development has not been accompanied by a critical discussion of the early and late health complications. METHODS: We selectively review recent studies on the acute, subacute, and chronic neuropsychiatric consequences of boxing. RESULTS: Cerebral concussions ("knock-outs") are the most relevant acute consequence of boxing. The number of reported cases of death in the ring seems to have mildly decreased. Subacute neuropsychological deficits appear to last longer than subjective symptoms. T

Are youth-only motorcycle helmet laws better than none at all?

INTRODUCTION: The trend in state motorcycle helmet laws has been a reduction from universal coverage requiring all riders to wear helmets, to partial coverage requiring only younger riders to wear helmets. In the current study we evaluate whether partial helmet laws reduce motorcycle fatalities and increase helmet compliance among young riders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compared a decade of motorcycle fatalities from the only 3 states with no helmet laws (New Hampshire, Iowa, Illinois) to 3 states with <or=17-year-old partial helmet laws (Connecticut, Indiana, Wisconsin). We excluded highway

Mandatory helmet legislation and the print media in Viet Nam.

With motorcycle ownership high and rising in Viet Nam, and motorcycle riders vulnerable to both fatal and non-fatal injury, the re-introduction of mandatory helmet legislation in 2007 has been a priority for the Vietnamese government. The paper uses a qualitative analysis of web-based versions of the eight most popular newspapers in Viet Nam to track reporting over four phases of the implementation of the legislation, identifying codes and constructing the dominant themes of the media coverage. The study documents the justification and promotion of the legislation, and the mechanisms for prepa

Effectiveness of collision-involved motorcycle helmets in Thailand.

The purpose of this study was to analyze variables present in selected motorcycle crashes involving helmeted riders to find the best injury predictors. The helmets used in this study were collected from motorcycle crashes in Thailand. Pertinent data were collected, a conventional helmet impact drop test apparatus was used to quantify the head impact forces, and stepwise multiple regression analyses were performed. The results indicate that the geometry of the object impacting the head and GSI were the best predictors for MAIS (R ( 2 ) =.875) while geometry of the object, liner thickness and im

Cycle helmets and the prevention of injuries. Recommendations for competitive sport.

The scientific evidence that bicycle helmets protect against head, brain and facial injuries has been well established by 5 well designed case-control studies. Additional evidence of helmet effectiveness has been provided from time series studies in Australia and the US. Bicycle helmets of all types that meet various national and international standards provide substantial protection for cyclists of all ages who are involved in a bicycle crash. This protection extends to crashes from a variety of causes (such as falls and collisions with fixed and moving objects) and includes crashes involving
