An innovative concept of using community information for surveys and developing a map of Simulium breeding sites.

BACKGROUND: Having a Simulium vector distribution map is important for all entomological and epidemiological aspects for the elimination of onchocerciasis. Developing these maps using topographic maps has some limitations such as identifying the exact locations of rapids, especially with low-scale maps. This leads to breeding sites being missed during prospecting. Recent efforts to map breeding sites involve the development of technologies such as satellite images, remote sensing modelling and drones. The limitations of these technologies include cost, security concerns and tree cover preventi

Climate-based forecasting from national Culex mosquito surveillance to support West Nile and Usutu virus preparedness in England and Wales.

Culex mosquitoes are widespread in temperate regions and play a key role in transmitting veterinary and human vector-borne diseases. In the United Kingdom, Culex pipiens s.l. is highly prevalent and a competent vector of West Nile and Usutu viruses. Coupled with the northward expansion of West Nile virus in Europe, this raises concerns about emergence in the UK. For public and animal health preparedness, and effective vector control planning, it is essential to better understand the distribution of Culex mosquitoes in this area. This study developed species distribution maps for Culex pipiens p

A co-designed feasibility study to understand the impact of an emergency homelessness housing intervention in Ireland.

Homelessness is a global challenge that impacts many population groups, including adults, families, and children. People become homeless for various reasons, and international data underestimates the prevalence of homelessness. The impact of homelessness on health and wellbeing is well described, including reduced life expectancy and significant morbidity. A lack of housing stock, increased waiting lists, and provision of temporary and emergency accommodation exist globally, with inconsistencies in approach and provision. Limited data are reported on the impact of the living conditions on heal

Confined to Obscurity: Health Challenges of Pregnant Women in Jail.

Research about pregnant women in jail is scant. This exploratory study begins to fill this gap by examining the demographics; background characteristics; and self-reported physical health, mental health, and substance use challenges reported by 27 pregnant women incarcerated in a large midwestern county jail. It further reports on the prenatal care before and during their incarceration, plans of these pregnant women for delivery of their child, caring for their infant after their release from jail, and their expectations of paternal or family support post-release. Among the sample, 66.7 percen

Community mobilisation and health management committee strengthening to increase birth attendance by trained health workers in rural Makwanpur, Nepal: study protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Birth attendance by trained health workers is low in rural Nepal. Local participation in improving health services and increased interaction between health systems and communities may stimulate demand for health services. Significant increases in birth attendance by trained health workers may be affected through community mobilisation by local women's groups and health management committee strengthening. We will test the effect of community mobilisation through women's groups, and health management committee strengthening, on institutional deliveries and home deliveries attended by

Experiences of self-harm, suicidal ideation and mental health care among autistic youth.

Autistic youth experience high rates of self-harm and suicidal ideation, and substantial barriers to adequate mental health care. Research suggests that mental health services may not meet the needs of autistic individuals, though autistic youth experiencing self-harm and suicidal ideation are underrepresented in this literature. The present study aimed to explore experiences of self-harm, suicidal ideation and mental health care among a sample of autistic youth recruited through two Australian government-funded youth mental health services. Online interviews with seven autistic participants a

Increasing Innu participation in public health: a qualitative study of data governance among Innu in Labrador, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Indigenous Peoples are not always engaged in setting health priorities and decry misapplication and misinterpretation of their data. Indigenous data governance and sovereignty can help overcome these issues, but they are variably implemented across Nations. Public health data governance is uniquely challenging, with implementation gaps presenting an exciting opportunity to define and remove barriers at all levels of government. METHODS: We sought to identify barriers (what) and facilitators (how) to implementing a local data governance plan with the goal of increasing Innu parti

A study of human resource competencies required to implement community rehabilitation in less resourced settings.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that over one billion persons worldwide have some form of disability. However, there is lack of knowledge and prioritisation of how to serve the needs and provide opportunities for people with disabilities. The community-based rehabilitation (CBR) guidelines, with sufficient and sustained support, can assist in providing access to rehabilitation services, especially in less resourced settings with low resources for rehabilitation. In line with strengthening the implementation of the health-related CBR guidelines, this study aimed to determine what workforce characte

Publishing priorities in global health: A framework and empirical analysis.

Though vital to health policymaking processes, little is known about the distribution of attention to issues global health journals focus on or their alignment with commitments to health equity. We developed a new framework and methods to help address these analytical gaps. We used content analysis to systematically identify and novel methods to measure attention to themes, subthemes and geographies represented in more than 2,000 research articles published in two of the longest-running multidisciplinary global health journals, Bulletin of the World Health Organization and Health Policy and Pl
