Effects of exposure to fine particulate matter in elderly hospitalizations due to respiratory diseases in the South of the Brazilian Amazon.

Exposure to air pollution is an important cause of hospital admissions due to respiratory diseases. Nevertheless, few studies use pollutant concentration data estimated by mathematical models. A time-series ecological study was developed, using data from hospitalizations due to respiratory diseases in people over 60 years of age, residents of Cuiabá, Brazil, during 2012, obtained from the Brazilian Ministry of Health. The independent variables were the concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO) estimated by mathematical modeling, minimum temperature, and relativ

Surveillance for equity in maternal care in Zimbabwe.

The great hope and promise of post-independence efforts to promote equitable health care in Zimbabwe started with three years of dramatic improvement. Commitment to correcting inequities which were as discriminatory as any country in the world produced rapid extension of health centre infrastructure and the improvement of district hospitals. The major constraint was the entrenched pattern of sophisticated, high-technology health care left by colonial administrators which continued to monopolize resources. In spite of the excellent beginning, development of services for the poor was thwarted by

From community engagement to lived experience leadership: a systematic review of HIV services among men who have sex with men.

Community responses are essential to achieving the global goal of Ending AIDS by 2030, yet men who have sex with men (MSM) remain underrepresented and often tokenized within HIV initiatives. While community engagement is widely emphasized, far less attention has been given to leadership rooted in lived experience. Meaningful community engagement requires recognizing MSM not merely as a target population, but as leaders shaping HIV responses. This systematic review examines how MSM perceive the use of their lived experiences in HIV responses and how institutions incorporate these experiences in

Access to novel cancer medicines in Europe: inequities across countries and their drivers.

BackgroundAn increasing number of cancer medicines are being developed and approved. Access to these medicines is important for improving patient outcomes and overall quality of care, yet achieving equitable access across countries in Europe is challenging.MethodThis study reviews inequities in access to novel cancer medicines in countries of the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA), and neighboring countries, at three critical stages: regulatory approval, reimbursement approval, and use in clinical practice. It also examines reasons contributing to these inequities. The analys

Managing anemia in for-profit dialysis chains: when ethics and business conflict.

The treatment of anemia in dialysis patients improves patient well-being and reduces the need for transfusions. Nevertheless, the hypothesis that normalization of hemoglobin via erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) would improve cardiovascular health and survival has largely been refuted by randomized trials showing increased cardiac events and mortality with higher Hgb targets and higher doses of ESAs. Given these observations, one would expect restraint in ESA use. However, profits for dialysis facilities depend greatly on charging insurers for medications, and ESAs are the most profitab

The importance of young surgeons in surgical health policy advocacy engagement.

BACKGROUND: Despite its critical importance, health policy advocacy remains vastly underutilized among surgeons and represents a critical area for professional development. Yet, interest is growing among younger physicians, particularly early-career surgeons who increasingly view advocacy as integral to patient care. Amid a rapidly evolving health care landscape, advocacy is defined as physician efforts to influence social, economic, and political factors affecting health and is essential for addressing systemic challenges. METHODS: Millennials and GenZ are now entering in early to mid-stages

Suffering, justice, and scarcity: philosophical reflections on the burden of cancer in LMICS using Nigeria as a case study.

Cancer represents a significant and growing public health emergency in Nigeria, where high mortality rates, late-stage presentation, inadequate infrastructure, prohibitive costs and pervasive stigma combine to produce a multidimensional crisis. While epidemiological data and health system analysis illuminate the scale of the problem, they fail to capture the deeper ethical, structural and existential realities that shape the lived experience of cancer. This paper employs key philosophical concepts, including distributive justice, social justice, structural violence, biopolitics, epistemic inju

The effects of direct addition of lead(ii) acetate to a human in vitro model of hematopoiesis recapitulates exposure to lead in utero.

Metal and heavy metal exposure during pregnancy and early immune system development is a known environmental health concern in the United States and worldwide. Michigan's aging infrastructure has led to disparities in heath equity regarding exposure to lead. Flint, Michigan drew national attention for dangerous lead levels in the community's water sources. However, a 2016 report from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services confirmed that no Michigan county has more lead-poisoned children than Kent County (Grand Rapids, MI), with a disproportionate number of lead-poisoned youth. The State of Primary Care in the United States.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Primary care, when done well, is the country's most cost-effective solution to runaway costs and widening health outcome gaps. Primary care is increasingly starved for resources, with associated reductions in relational continuity and comprehensiveness that collectively increase the risk of losing patient trust. The 2021 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report, Implementing High-Quality Primary Care: Rebuilding the Foundation of Health Care, supported a cascade of federal initiatives to strengthen, coordinate, and create accountability for pri

Overcoming Barriers to Healthcare Reform: A Call to Action.

The success of healthcare reform hinges on policymaker, regulator, and administrator actions that shape policies at various levels. These policies can either facilitate or hinder the practice of healthcare professionals and collaborative work environments. It is imperative for all healthcare professionals to fully utilize their education and certification, as fostering an equitable workplace culture is vital for retaining staff and improving access to care. Using nurse practitioners (NPs) as an exemplar, this article aims to specify systemic barriers to healthcare reform and call for policymak

Re-Evaluating the Use of Glyphosate-based Herbicides: Implications on Fertility.

Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) are the most widely used herbicides in the United States, accounting for 19% of estimated global use. Although the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reaffirmed that the active ingredient glyphosate (GLY) is safe for humans, recent studies on exposure have suggested association with cancer, metabolic disorders, endocrine disruption and infertility, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, and psychological disorders. Current literature on the effects of GLY exposure on reproductive function suggests potential clinical implications on women's reproductive h
