Spatiotemporal dynamics of HIV-1 transmission networks in a major migration hub: integrated phylogenetic and molecular evidence.

OBJECTIVE: Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) cross-regional transmission poses a critical challenge in China, particularly in high-mobility metropolitan centers. This study aimed to characterize the transmission dynamics between Hangzhou-a megacity with 11.9 million residents (42% migrants)-and other Chinese regions using molecular epidemiology. METHODS: We analyzed 4,249 Hangzhou-derived and 50,898 non-Hangzhou HIV-1 pol sequences. Molecular transmission network analysis was used to identify transmission clusters, and phylogenetic and Bayesian analyses were conducted to explore lin

Sexually Transmitted Infection Risk among Women Is Not Fully Explained by Partner Numbers.

OBJECTIVES: Increased sexual partner numbers may contribute to sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk for some but not all women. This study compared women reporting having four or more partners during the preceding year (multiple partnership group) with those reporting having one partner (single partnership group) with regard to sexually risky behaviors and other modifiable predictors of STI risk. We also compared the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes simplex virus type 2, and human immunodeficiency virus among groups. METHODS: Eligi

Comparative investigation of Langerhans' cells and potential receptors for HIV in oral, genitourinary and rectal epithelia.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is commonly transmitted, during homosexual and heterosexual intercourse, through the rectal and cervicovaginal mucosa, foreskin and urethral epithelia. However, there is uncertainty about HIV transmission through the oral mucosa by oral sex. We have carried out a comparative immunohistological investigation of primate oral, cervicovaginal, foreskin, urethral and rectal epithelia for potential HIV receptors. We investigated epithelial tissues for CD4 glycoprotein, which is the principal receptor for HIV, Fc receptors of IgG for binding HIV-IgG antibody complex

Epidemiology of genital herpes infections.

Much has been learned in the last decade about the epidemiology of genital herpes infections, including new information about seroprevalence and the risk of transmission of genital herpes to sex partners and at delivery. Unfortunately, the type-specific serologic assays now routinely used in these studies are not widely available, and commercially available assays that claim to be type-specific are not. Thus, most clinicians still do not have access to reliable type-specific assays. In cross-sectional seroprevalence studies, detection of HSV-2 antibody is positively associated with increasing

Mental health and help-seeking in Czech sexual minorities: a nationally representative cross-sectional study.

AIMS: The mental health of sexual minority (SM) individuals remains overlooked and understudied in Czechia. We aimed to estimate (1) the prevalence rate and (2) the relative risk of common mental disorders and (3) the mental distress severity among the Czech SM people compared with the heterosexual population. In addition, we aimed to investigate help-seeking for mental disorders in SM people. METHODS: We used data from a cross-sectional, nationally representative survey of Czech community-dwelling adults, consisting of 3063 respondents (response rate = 58.62%). We used the Mini-International

Post-traumatic stress disorder among LGBTQ people: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIMS: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people (LGBTQ) are at increased risk of traumatization. This systematic review aimed to summarize data regarding the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for LGBTQ people and their subgroups. METHODS: Medline, Scopus, PsycINFO and EMBASE were searched until September 2022. Studies reporting a comparative estimation of PTSD among LGBTQ population and the general population (i.e., heterosexual/cisgender), without restrictions on participants' age and setting for the enrolment, were identified. Meta-analyses were based on odds ratio (O

Sexual minorities and substance use treatment utilization: New evidence from a national sample.

INTRODUCTION: Minority stress theory suggests that sexual minorities would be, on average, less likely than heterosexual individuals to seek out substance use treatment (due to concerns of stigma and rejection). However, prior research on the subject is mixed, and largely dated. In light of historic increases in societal acceptance and legal protections for sexual minorities, the field needs an up-to-date assessment of treatment utilization among this population. METHODS: This study used data from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health to examine the association between key inde

Association between co-residence and loneliness during COVID-19 among sexual minority people in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Research has identified that loneliness during COVID-19 is associated with co-residence status, and individuals living alone were more likely to report loneliness. However, it may not apply to sexual minority people as those living with their family may experience different sexual orientation-related stressors. AIMS: This study aims to (1) understand the pattern of living arrangement and loneliness among sexual minority people during COVID-19, (2) examine parental acceptance, family conflict and loneliness among sexual minority people with different living arrangements and (3) inv

LGBTQ Youth Homelessness: Why We Need to Protect Our LGBTQ Youth.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth are 120% more likely to be homeless than cisgender and heterosexual youth, yet current federal policies are insufficient and exclude LGBTQ youth. Youth homeless shelters are inadequately equipped to serve LGBTQ homeless youth due to poor funding, a focus on heterosexual or cisgender clients in their programs, and a lack of LGBTQ-friendly policies. Given the pervasiveness of this issue, public health and social policy interventions must be considered. In this perspective, the LGBTQ homeless youth epidemic is introduced and

Factors Associated with Bacterial Vaginosis among Women Who Have Sex with Women: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Women who have sex with women (WSW) have a higher burden of bacterial vaginosis (BV) than heterosexual women; studies of risk factors specific to this population are limited. We summarised current knowledge regarding risk factors for BV among WSW by systematic review. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA statement. PUBMED, EMBASE, Web of Science and The Cochrane Library were searched to 31st December, 2014. INCLUSION CRITERIA: 1) WSW included in the study population; 2) accepted BV diagnostic method; 3) investigated or could extrapolate factors(s)

Living "anyway:" stories of access.

Elana Dykewomon's 1974 novel, Riverfinger Women, was among the first lesbian books with a "happy ending." Her seven books of fiction and poetry include the Lambda Award winner Beyond the Pale (now an audio and e-book) and Lambda nominee, Risk. She was an editor of the lesbian-feminist journal, Sinister Wisdom, for eight years. Her literary work foregrounds the lesbian heroic as integral to women's communities. As a social justice activist, she has organized and participated in anti-war, anti-racist, anti-classist, fat and disability rights work since the 1970s. She is now working with Old Lesb

Fleshy specificity: (re)considering transsexual subjects in lesbian communities.

The transsexual subject position has recently been subsumed under the labeling "transgender." This article considers the implications of this new labeling for transsexual subjects and their capacity to be incorporated into, or at least configured as affiliated with, lesbian communities and their popularization of transgender terminology. By tracing the complicated academic and political etymology of "transgender," this article shows how the term unfairly erases the lived experiences of transsexual subjects by ignoring their specificities in the flesh. The article concludes by offering alternat

Alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, and other substance use among lesbian and bisexual women.

Relationships between sexual orientation and a wide range of substance use and problem variables were examined based on data from the 2000 National Alcohol Survey. Lesbians, bisexuals, and heterosexually identified women who report same-sex partners were compared to exclusively heterosexual women in relation to alcohol consumption, use of tobacco and other drugs, bar-going, alcohol-related problems, and past substance abuse treatment. Substance use patterns were complex and varied between sexual orientation groups. These differences underscore the importance of developing lesbian- and bisexual

The concerns of lesbians seeking counseling: a review of the literature.

Whilst lesbians are no different in terms of psychological adjustment than heterosexuals, they do seek counseling for a variety of reasons and some of these are unique to their experiences as lesbians. Some of these reasons are related to difficulties in coming out, particularly in young lesbians, and some are to do with relationship problems. In most cases where lesbians seek counseling it is difficult to establish a rapport and therapeutic milieu without disclosure of sexual orientation even if this does not directly relate to the presenting problems. However, empirical evidence suggests tha

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people's attitudes to end-of-life decision-making and advance care planning.

AIM: To examine lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people's attitudes to advance care planning (ACP) options and alternative decision-making at the end of life. METHOD: Three hundred and five LGBT people completed an online or paper-based questionnaire, comprising fixed-choice questions and open-ended questions. RESULTS: Most respondents, particularly those identifying as female or transgender, preferred a partner to be their alternative decision-maker at the end of life should the need arise. Fifty-two per cent of respondents had spoken to this person about their wishes. Regardin

Alcohol and drug use and related consequences among gay, lesbian and bisexual college students: role of experiencing violence, feeling safe on campus, and perceived stress.

OBJECTIVE: To examine differences between gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) and non-GLB university students in alcohol and other drug use (AOD) and related consequences as well as the relevance of violence, perceived safety, and stress to any such differences in AOD use and related concerns. METHODS: A random representative sample of university students (n=988) were recruited via email for an online survey. Linear regression models assessed associations between identifying as GLB and AOD use and related consequences. RESULTS: Regression models (adjusted for gender) indicated that, in comparis

HIV-related needs for safety among male-to-female transsexuals (mak nyah) in Malaysia.

This research, commissioned by the Malaysian AIDS Council in 2007, is qualitative and descriptive in nature. In depth face-to-face interviews were carried out with 15 mak nyah respondents from five major towns. The interviews were guided by an interview schedule that had seven main topics: brief background; hormone-taking behaviour; safe sex; health care; substance abuse; harassment from authorities; and HIV prevention. The HIV problem among the mak nyah, mak nyah sex workers and their clients is critical. Many do not have in-depth HIV/AIDS knowledge and do not practise safe sex. The problem g
