Comparative analysis estimates the relative frequencies of co-divergence and cross-species transmission within viral families.

The cross-species transmission of viruses from one host species to another is responsible for the majority of emerging infections. However, it is unclear whether some virus families have a greater propensity to jump host species than others. If related viruses have an evolutionary history of co-divergence with their hosts there should be evidence of topological similarities between the virus and host phylogenetic trees, whereas host jumping generates incongruent tree topologies. By analyzing co-phylogenetic processes in 19 virus families and their eukaryotic hosts we provide a quantitative and

Sulfatases and radical SAM enzymes: emerging themes in glycosaminoglycan metabolism and the human microbiota.

Humans live in a permanent association with bacterial populations collectively called the microbiota. In the last 10 years, major advances in our knowledge of the microbiota have shed light on its critical roles in human physiology. The microbiota has also been shown to be a major factor in numerous pathologies including obesity or inflammatory disorders. Despite tremendous progresses, our understanding of the key functions of the human microbiota and the molecular basis of its interactions with the host remain still poorly understood. Among the factors involved in host colonization, two enzym

A taxonomy update for the family Polyomaviridae.

Many distinct polyomaviruses infecting a variety of vertebrate hosts have recently been discovered, and their complete genome sequence could often be determined. To accommodate this fast-growing diversity, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) Polyomaviridae Study Group designed a host- and sequence-based rationale for an updated taxonomy of the family Polyomaviridae. Applying this resulted in numerous recommendations of taxonomical revisions, which were accepted by the Executive Committee of the ICTV in December 2015. New criteria for definition and creation of polyomaviru

Can the same species of Platynosomum (Trematoda: Dicrocoeliidae) infect both mammalian and avian hosts?

The importance of platynosomiasis has increased in feline veterinary practice, but aspects related to the specificity of Platynosomum spp. in definitive hosts requires further study. Although morphological traits suggest that the same species, P. illiciens, may infect both birds and mammals, the synonymies previously proposed have not been widely accepted, likely because host specificity is assumed. In addition, the name P. fastosum has frequently been used for parasites recovered from mammals. In the present study, metacercariae (n= 100/animal) of P. illiciens recovered from lizards (Hemidact…

Characterization of Hepatozoon spp. in Leptodactylus chaquensis and Leptodactylus podicipinus from two regions of the Pantanal, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

Hepatozoon sp. are parasites that commonly infect frogs and arthropod vectors. This species has variability in the morphological and morphometric characteristics. Due to these variations, the naming of the species is thus impaired and only by visualizing the sporogonic cycle in vector and by molecular studies this problem can be solved. Recently, the use of molecular genetics has helped the species denomination. In this work, we collected 145 frogs (68 Leptodactylus chaquensis and 77 Leptodactylus podicipinus) in different sampling sites, where were found 18 (26.47%) L. chaquensis and 24 (31.1

Two new species of Phyllodistomum Braun, 1899 (Trematoda: Gorgoderidae Looss, 1899) from Great Barrier Reef fishes.

Two new species of Phyllodistomum Braun, 1899 are described from the urinary bladder of fishes of the Great Barrier Reef. Phyllodistomum hoggettae n. sp. is described from Plectropomus leopardus (leopard coralgrouper) (Serranidae) and P. vaili n. sp. is described from Mulloidichthys vanicolensis (yellowfin goatfish) and M. flavolineatus (yellowstripe goatfish) (Mullidae). These species are compared with 26 previously described marine Phyllodistomum species and found to be distinct in combinations of body shape, sucker ratio and shape of the gonads. Preliminary molecular data also demonstrate t

[Research progress on transmission capacity of reservoir host of Schistosoma japonicum].

This paper reviews the researches related to the reservoir hosts of Schistosoma japonicum, including bovine, sheep, dog, cat and wild mouse. Combined with the implementation of the comprehensive control strategy with an emphasis on infection source control in current, it puts forward several future research directions under the condition that the effects of people and bovine as infection sources weakened gradually, such as revaluation on the actual transmission capacity of non-bovine livestock, for example, sheep, dog, pig and wild mouse, as well as discussion on some transmission threshold va

A sequential binomial sampling plan for potato psyllid (Hemiptera: Triozidae) on bell pepper (Capsicum annum).

BACKGROUND: Potato psyllids (Bactericera cockerelli Sulc) are a pest on solanaceous crop plants, including bell peppers. Potato psyllids vector Candidatus Liberibacter psyllaurous, but bell peppers (Capsicum annum L.) do not exhibit symptoms from infection. Potato psyllids show variation in spatial patterns and host choice with cultivar and plant species. Consequently, a study of spatial distribution and sampling plan specific to bell peppers is necessary for management of this insect pest, as those developed for other crops are unlikely to transfer among crops. RESULTS: Potato psyllids were

Experimental infections of Orchitophrya stellarum (Scuticociliata) in American blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) and fiddler crabs (Uca minax).

Outbreaks of an unidentified ciliate have occurred on several occasions in blue crabs from Chesapeake Bay held during winter months in flow-through systems. The parasite was initially thought to be Mesanophrys chesapeakensis, but molecular analysis identified it as Orchitophyra stellarum, a facultative parasite of sea stars (Asteroidea). We investigated the host-parasite association of O. stellarum in the blue crab host. Crabs were inoculated with the ciliate, or they were held in bath exposures after experimentally induced autotomy of limbs in order to determine potential mechanisms for infec

Anopheles gambiae as a host for geographic isolates of Plasmodium vivax.

The G-3 strain of Anopheles gambiae was compared with 2 other strains of An. gambiae and An. freeborni, An. stephensi, and An. dirus for susceptibility to infection with 7 different geographic strains of Plasmodium vivax. Ratios of infection varied, indicating that certain strains of P. vivax were more infectious to the G-3 strain of An. gambiae than to other anopheline species/strains. Based on the comparative number of oocysts per mosquito, the relationships between the 3 strains of An. gambiae were closer than between the G-3 strain of An. gambiae and the 3 other species of Anopheles. Finding and recognition of the bovine host by the cercariae of Schistosoma spindale.

The cercaria of Schistosoma spindale finds and identifies its bovine host with at least five behavioral phases. (1) Dispersal in and selecti … S. spindale seems to be adapted to hairy hosts that are infected in shallow, muddy waters. The low host specificity of the cercarial host-finding behavior is compensated by an intimate parasite-snail intermediate host relationship, resulting in a high cercarial production of up to greater than 7,000 cercariae per snail per day.

Tissue-Resident Macrophages: Linking Physiology and Inflammation in Infection.

Macrophages are found in every tissue in the body, and their importance goes far beyond clearing pathogens. Developmental studies have shown that many macrophage populations originate during embryogenesis, persist through self-renewal, and adopt transcriptional and functional programs defined by their tissue environment. These tissue-resident macrophages (TRMs) are embedded within organ physiology, where they regulate, for instance, cardiac conduction, sculpt synaptic circuits, recycle iron, maintain epithelial barriers, and coordinate repair. During infection, TRMs connect to neural, metaboli

A Gifsy prophage-encoded protein confers broad phage resistance in Salmonella enterica and is widely distributed across Enterobacteriaceae.

Phage Felix O1 (FO1) is one of the most widely used bacteriophages for targeting Salmonella enterica and is applied in both research and food safety settings. Despite its broad host range, we observed significantly reduced efficiency of plating (EOP) on a subset of Salmonella enterica strains, including serovar Typhimurium 4/74 (S. 4/74). We found that O-antigen-mediated steric hindrance contributes to this resistance, which can be partially overcome by supplementation with the SP6 phage tailspike protein (TSP). However, full restoration of the EOP required deletion of the Gifsy-1 prophage, le

Temperature Affects the Host Range of Rhabdochlamydia porcellionis.

The Rhabdochlamydiaceae family is a recent addition to the Chlamydiae phylum. Its members were discovered in cockroaches and woodlice, but recent metagenomics surveys demonstrated the widespread distribution of this family in the environment. It was, moreover, estimated to be the largest family of the Chlamydiae phylum based on the diversity of its 16S rRNA encoding gene. Unlike most Chlamydia-like organisms, no Rhabdochlamydiaceae member could be cultivated in amoebae, and its host range remains unknown. We tested the permissivity of various mammalian and arthropod cell lines to determine the

Morphological Variation in the Wing Mite Periglischrus paracaligus (Acari: Spinturnicidae) Associated With Different Moving Strategies of the Host Leptonycteris yerbabuenae (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae).

We evaluated the morphometric variation of wing mite Periglischrus paracaligus Herrin and Tipton, along with the distribution of their host Leptonycteris yerbabuenae Martinez and Villa, in Mexico. A total of 115 female and 96 male specimens of P. paracaligus were used to conduct linear and geometric morphometric analyses. We assessed the influence of the geographic distribution of the migratory and nonmigratory populations of its bat host species on changes in size and shape on these parasites. Both analyses revealed high intraspecific variation in P. paracaligus, but subtle geographic differe

Here, There, and Everywhere: The Wide Host Range and Geographic Distribution of Zoonotic Orthopoxviruses.

The global emergence of zoonotic viruses, including poxviruses, poses one of the greatest threats to human and animal health. Forty years after the eradication of smallpox, emerging zoonotic orthopoxviruses, such as monkeypox, cowpox, and vaccinia viruses continue to infect humans as well as wild and domestic animals. Currently, the geographical distribution of poxviruses in a broad range of hosts worldwide raises concerns regarding the possibility of outbreaks or viral dissemination to new geographical regions. Here, we review the global host ranges and current epidemiological understanding o

Host range of Triatoma virus does not extend to Aedes aegypti and Apis mellifera.

Vector control is the most effective method to prevent transmission of Chagas disease. Control is mostly made through chemical insecticides although they have negative impact on wild pollinators, such as bees. Reducing pesticide use through biological alternatives could minimize the damage to these beneficial insects. Triatoma virus (TrV) is a pathogen able to kill triatomines and thus a valid candidate to be used as biological control agent. In this study we evaluate the capacity of TrV to infect an important beneficial insect (Apis mellifera) as well as a plague insect (Aedes aegypti). Resul
