When sex is demanded as payment for health-care services.

Sexual corruption or sextortion has gained recent attention in the anti-corruption space. It occurs when a sexual favour is used as the currency for a bribe. Sexual corruption is a manifestation of gender-based violence, is inherently a human rights violation, and is a grave public health concern because of its effects on the physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing of the person who has experienced sexual corruption. It impacts health systems' abilities to achieve universal health coverage and deliver services in the most effective, high-quality manner. Despite the health consequences, limit…

"Kita habis…we will be gone": The politics of population, family planning and racialization in West Papua.

In the context of a steadily decreasing Indigenous population, active military occupation, and a documented history of human rights abuses perpetrated by Indonesian state security forces, Black Indigenous Papuans have uttered phrases like extinction, and we will be gone in public and private spaces. These utterances often follow an indictment of Indonesia's national family planning program as a key node of state apparatuses of domination and, by extension, genocide. Amid Indonesia's global health success story of a historically lauded national family planning model, I examine the emergence of …

The Adaptation and Validation of the Trans Attitudes and Beliefs Scale to the Spanish Context.

This article examines the reliability and validity of the adaptation of the Trans Attitudes and Beliefs Scale (TABS), an instrument capable of detecting transphobic positions, to the Spanish context. A total of 829 psychology students participated in the adaptation procedure. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to study the fit of the new scale to the factor structure of the original scale (interpersonal comfort, gender identity beliefs, and human value). Convergent validity evidence showed significant correlations and predictive levels with different constructs and sociodemographic v

Debilitated Lifeworlds: Women's Narratives of Forced Sterilization as Delinking from Reproductive Rights.

Peasant women in Cajamarca, Peru, who were sterilized by the Peruvian government in the 1990s, narrate their experiences of reproductive abuse using Andean medical principles of debilidad and fuerza (debility and strength) (Tapias 2006). In their narratives, many describe a generalized sense of loss of strength resulting from the procedure. This contrasts with the reproductive rights framework's emphasis on infertility as the main harm. In this article, I ponder the dissonance between these two frameworks and propose the concept of debilitated lifeworlds as decolonial feminist delinking (Migno

The devil we know: is the use of injectable agents for the treatment of MDR-TB justified?

For decades, second-line injectable agents (IAs) have been the cornerstone of treatment for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Although evidence on the efficacy of IAs is limited, there is an expanding body of evidence on the serious adverse events caused by these drugs. Here, we present the results of a structured literature review of the safety and efficacy of IAs. We review the continued widespread use of these agents in the context of therapeutic alternatives-most notably the newer TB drugs, bedaquiline and delamanid-and from the context of human rights, ethics and patient-centered…

Adverse health consequences of US Government responses to the 2001 terrorist attacks.

In response to the attacks on Sept 11, 2001 (9/11), and the related security concerns, the USA and its coalition partners began a war in Afghanistan and subsequently invaded Iraq. The wars caused many deaths of non-combatant civilians, further damaged the health-supporting infrastructure and the environment (already adversely affected by previous wars), forced many people to migrate, led to violations of human rights, and diverted resources away from important health needs. After 9/11 and the anthrax outbreak shortly afterwards, the USA and other countries have improved emergency preparedness …

Listerial meningitis in a patient with undiagnosed acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: ampicillin should be added to the empirical antibiotic coverage.

Meningitis is an important differential diagnosis in patients with fever, headache, and/or altered consciousness in the emergency department (ED). With human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection becoming increasingly common, patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) need to be recognised promptly to facilitate the choice of appropriate antibiotic therapy for potential opportunistic infections. Physicians should be able to recognise a patient with undiagnosed AIDS who presents to the ED and perform further confirmational tests without violating the rights of the patient. Additio

[Centenary of the Health Council of the Netherlands. V. Ethical-social issues].

Since its inception, the Health Council of the Netherlands has included normative aspects in its reports. Over the past decades, ethics and rights have received increasing attention, particularly since the establishment of the Standing Committee on Medical Ethics and Health Law in 1977. In particular, the ethical implications of bio-molecular life sciences (genetic counselling, genetic screening, research with human embryos) have been discussed in the Council's publications. The Council has also been involved from an early stage in the euthanasia discussion. It is accepted that policy advice c

Caring and communicating. Observations on 19 Baby Doe patients.

Under authority of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and stimulated by the well-publicized birth of a child with Down syndrome and esophageal atresia in 1982, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has actively responded to reports of alleged discriminatory failure to care for handicapped infants. Investigators and consultants from the (HHS) Office for Civil Rights have visited hospitals and interviewed various persons. Observations made and unofficial conclusions drawn by one participant in 19 such investigations relate not only to the care provided to these childre

Discursive constructions of employee mental health in South African labour legislation and organizational policy: implications for psychosocial safety climate.

South African labour legislation and organizational policies provide fragmented and largely reactive entry points for employee mental health protection, yet the discursive mechanisms through which this pattern is reproduced remain underexamined. This study reports a qualitative documentary analysis of how legislative and organizational policy texts construct employee mental health in South Africa and considers the implications of these constructions for psychosocial safety climate (PSC) and the constitutional rights to dignity, equality, and access to healthcare services. A Fairclough-informed
