Fingertip Sweat Leucine Detection Based on Electrochemical MIP Sensors Integrated with Porous Hydrogels.

Leucine (Leu) is a promising biomarker for metabolic health and muscle growth, offering significant potential for assessing physical well-being. Sweat sensors for Leu detection eliminate the reliance on invasive blood analysis and the sophisticated, large-scale instrumentation. Current sweat sensors, however, are complex to fabricate, exhibit low sensitivity toward nonelectroactive Leu, require intense exercise or thermal/chemical stimulation to generate sweat, and lack reusability. This work reports a flexible, highly sensitive, and reusable sweat sensor based on molecularly imprinted polymer

Biomimetic mineralized hydrogels loaded with strontium-proanthocyanidins coordination particles for bone defect repair.

Impaired vascularization and persistent inflammation strongly impede the healing of bone defects. To overcome these challenges, strontium-proanthocyanidins (PA) coordination particles (SrPA) with a particle size distribution of 600-900 nm were prepared. These SrPA particles were dispersed into sodium alginate (SA) solution pre-mixed with hydroxyapatite (HAp) and glutamate (Glu). A dual cross-linking process with HAp and calcium (Ca2+) increased the compressive strength of the resulting SrPA/HAp/glutamate/SA (nnGS) hydrogel by approximately 43-fold. As demonstrated by in vitro experiments, the

Sodium alginate-poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) pH-responsive hydrogels for controlled release of tinidazole.

Unlike conventional single polymer hydrogels, cross-linked sodium alginate/poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) provides greater structural integrity and pH-responsiveness. This synergy minimizes premature drug leakage in the upper gastrointestinal tract to ensure targeted drug release specifically to the colon. In this study, sodium alginate-poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) hydrogels were synthesized via an ionotropic method, by varying the polymer and CaCl2 concentrations for colon specific controlled release of tinidazole. The hydrogels were characterized using Fourier transform infrared, field emission scanning…

Methacrylated alginate hydrogels for water absorption and metal ion removal in environmental applications.

Water contamination by heavy metals poses significant environmental risks, requiring efficient remediation strategies. In this study, methacrylated alginate hydrogels were synthesized and photocrosslinked under UV radiation to develop an effective adsorbent material. A design of experiments (DOE) approach was used to evaluate the effects of alginate concentration (20-30 g L-1) and UV exposure time (1-3 h) on swelling capacity and metal adsorption. The hydrogels exhibited tunable swelling behavior (135 ± 0.4% to 442.9 ± 26.2%) that was influenced by polymer network density. Adsorption tests rev…

Robust and stretchable dynamic cellulose-based complex hydrogels and their dye adsorption performance.

Dye-contaminated wastewater poses severe environmental and health risks. To address this challenge, this study developed a novel composite hydrogel based on oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose (OCMC). OCMC was first synthesized via sodium periodate oxidation of carboxymethyl cellulose and subsequently cross-linked with gelatin (GEL) and alkali lignin (AL) to fabricate OCMC/AL/GEL composite hydrogels. The composite hydrogel has a dual-network structure stabilized by dynamic imine and hydrogen bonds. It delivers a tensile strength of 239 kPa, stretchability of 327%, exceptional fatigue resistance (…

Human Osteochondral Granular Extracellular Matrix (gECM) Hydrogels Drive Tissue-Specific Composition and Mechanics.

Osteochondral defects remain a major clinical challenge due to the limited regenerative capacity of cartilage and the complexity of the osteochondral interface. Here, we present a human-derived granular extracellular matrix (gECM) hydrogel platform designed for translational osteochondral repair. Using otherwise discarded human donor tissues, we developed cartilage and bone gECM hydrogels under current good manufacturing practice workflows. These materials are shear-thinning, immediately hold their form, and crosslink under physiological conditions to form stable constructs. Proteomic analysis…

Alkaline Phosphatase-Responsive Composite Hydrogels Modulating Tumor Mechanical Properties for Cervical Cancer Therapy.

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is aberrantly overexpressed in cervical tumor cells, particularly HeLa cells, rendering it a promising endogenous trigger for tumor therapeutic interventions. Herein, a thiol-functionalized ALP-responsive peptide (pY) was integrated with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) via Au-S bonds to fabricate the composite hydrogel precursor (Au-pY). Upon catalysis by tumor-overexpressed ALP, Au-pY self-assembles into Au NP-embedded composite hydrogels (Au-Gel) both intracellularly and extracellularly. Au-Gel exhibits enhanced mechanical properties compared to pure peptide hydrogels.…

Hybrid supramolecular-nanocomposite hydrogels based on polyethylene glycol (PEG), β-cyclodextrin-adamantane host-guest interactions, and silica nanoparticles represent an important class of hierarchical soft materials with tunable viscoelastic and transport properties. This review critically analyzes recent progress in cyclodextrin-silica hybrid PEG hydrogels, focusing on the mechanistic coupling between stiffness, stress relaxation, and molecular transport arising from the interplay between reversible supramolecular crosslinks and nanoparticle-induced confinement effects. Particular attention…

Scale-Matched Nanoscale Confinement Governs Chain Cooperativity and Fatigue Resistance in Soft Hydrogels.

Despite the presence of abundant reversible interactions in single-network hydrogels, they still frequently fail under cyclic loading. This limitation originates from the mismatch between the nanoscale anchoring distance d and the polymer correlation length ξ. As d/ξ approaches unity, nanoscale anchors cooperatively recruit previously dormant chains, suppress mesoscale heterogeneity, and enable reversible hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions to mediate efficient cyclic load transfer. Hydrogels tuned to this length-scale-matched regime exhibit an adhesion strength of 30 kPa, a fracture strain …

Bioinspired design of hierarchical structured hydrogels with extraordinary lubrication and load-bearing capacity.

Conventional homogeneous hydrogels typically face an inherent trade-off between mechanical strength and lubrication performance. Achieving high load-bearing capacity requires dense crosslinking and tight chain entanglement, which inevitably restrict water uptake and suppress the formation of effective hydration layers. Herein, inspired by the anisotropic architecture of natural ligaments, we developed a robust lubricious hydrogel material (STOC-D) through synergistic spontaneous tensile orientation under confinement (STOC) processing and surface dissociation modification. The STOC process gene…

Deep Eutectic Solvent Based Multifunctional Hydrogels for Strain Sensing and Electrophysiological Signal Monitoring.

Hydrogels are promising for flexible electronics due to their unique properties, but their practical use is hindered by freezing and dehydration in extreme environments. Inspired by natural cryoprotection, we designed a hydrophilic deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of acryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride (AETC) and urea. This DES/H2O binary solvent was then polymerized into a multifunctional hydrogel via a facile one-step photopolymerization. The dense hydrogen-bonding network within the DES effectively confines the motion of water molecules, thereby endowing the hydrogel with excepti…

Reversible Sol-Gel Transition in Thermoresponsive Collagen Hydrogels for Cryogen-Free Cell Logistics.

Cell culture is foundational to biomedical advancements, yet its widespread clinical and practical distribution is severely constrained by the high infrastructural costs of cryogenic logistics and the physical stressors of liquid-phase transit. Herein, we propose a proof-of-concept cryogen-free cell transportation strategy leveraging a rapid reversible thermoresponsive collagen (RRTC) hydrogel regulated by simulated body fluid (SBF). Operating via temperature-driven physical network assembly and disassembly rather than chemical crosslinking or chemical modifications, the RRTC system undergoes

In Situ Programming of Shape-Morphing Hydrogels via Vat Photopolymerization for 4D Bioprinting.

The fabrication of complex architectures remains a central challenge in 3D bioprinting, as the low mechanical properties of hydrogels limit the range of achievable geometries. Four-dimensional (4D) bioprinting can address these limitations by enabling programmed shape-morphing behavior; however, in most approaches, this functionality is introduced after hydrogel formation, limiting the complexity of the resulting deformation. Here, a proof-of-concept strategy is presented, in which shape-morphing is directly encoded during fabrication. By modulating light exposure time layer-by-layer in vat ph…

Reconfiguring handed shape-morphing and actuation in hydrogels via light-encoded rapid expansion.

Reconfiguring handedness in synthetic systems with spatiotemporal control and reversible behavior remains a fundamental challenge in bioinspired robotics and materials science-especially in structurally homogeneous materials that lack intrinsic chirality. Here, we demonstrate homogeneous photoactive hydrogels capable of ultrafast, programmable handed shape-morphing, including helices and twists, through spatially controlled light illumination. This transformation is driven by a photoexpansion exceeding 80,000% volumetric growth within 40 seconds, enabled by the synergistic combination of spiro…

Dual-responsive chitosan/pluronic F-127 composite hydrogels for smart controlled drug delivery.

In this study, a dual-responsive composite hydrogels were successfully developed using pH-sensitive chitosan (Cs) and the thermosensitive polymer Pluronic F-127 (PF-127) to explore its potential for drug delivery. The NaOH treatment was employed to modify the hydrogen-bonding interactions within Cs, enabling designed molecular organization prior to its incorporation into PF-127. This strategy effectively tuned the sol gel transition behaviour and viscosity of the system, resulting in an LCST (lower critical solution temperature) of approximately 37 °C ideal for biological applications. In cyto…
