Latent profiles of psychological flexibility and inflexibility among Korean young adults: associations with depression and anxiety.

This study explored the latent profiles of psychological flexibility and inflexibility, core processes in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Psychological flexibility refers to the capacity to stay open to internal experiences and to pursue valued actions even in the presence of distress, whereas inflexibility involves rigid attempts to avoid or control them. Using a subgroup-based approach within a nomothetic framework, we investigated how the identified subgroups were associated with depression and anxiety. Participants comprised 1,000 Korean young adults (Mage = 28.68, SDage = 4.10).

Prospective multidimensional predictors of poor sleep quality in older adults: A cross-national study.

Poor sleep quality is highly prevalent among older adults and is associated with a wide range of adverse psychological, cognitive, and physical health outcomes. However, existing evidence has largely been derived from single-country studies, limiting the understanding of whether predictors of poor sleep quality are consistent across different sociocultural contexts. Guided by the biopsychosocial framework, this study aimed to identify shared and context-specific predictors of subsequent poor sleep quality among older adults using data from four nationally representative longitudinal cohorts (H

Clustering analysis identifies two subgroups of women with fibromyalgia with different psychological, cognitive, health-related, and physical features but similar widespread pressure pain sensitivity.

OBJECTIVE: Given that identification of groups of patients can help to better understand risk factors related to each group and to improve personalized therapeutic strategies, this study aimed to identify subgroups (clusters) of women with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) according to pain, pain-related disability, neurophysiological, cognitive, health, psychological, or physical features. METHODS: Demographic, pain, sensory, pain-related disability, psychological, health, cognitive, and physical variables were collected in 113 women with FMS. Widespread pressure pain thresholds were also assessed

Attempts at memory control induce dysfunctional brain activation profiles in Generalized Anxiety Disorder: An exploratory fMRI study.

Suppression of aversive memories through memory control has historically been proposed as a central psychological defense mechanism. Inability to suppress memories is considered a central psychological trait in several psychiatric disorders, including Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Yet, few studies have attempted the focused identification of dysfunctional brain activation profiles when patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorders attempt memory control. Using a well-characterized behavioral paradigm we studied brain activation profiles in a group of adult GAD patients and well-matched hea

Nutritional and psychological considerations after bariatric surgery.

The anatomic and physiological changes resulting from bariatric surgery can affect both nutrition and psychological attitudes. Modifications of the gastrointestinal tract lead to a diminished ability to absorb nutrients, electrolytes, and bile salts, as well as deficiencies in iron, calcium, and other vitamins and minerals. Dehydration, lactose intolerance, and protein calorie malnutrition are other common sequelae. Alterations in bone metabolism increase long-term risk for osteopenia and osteoporosis. Noncompliance with postsurgical nutritional regimens has been estimated to occur in from one

Early predictors of injury mortality among Swedish conscripts: a 35-year cohort study.

Injuries represent an important cause of mortality among young adults. We studied the associations between adolescents' family, psychological, behavioural and drug-related risk factors in relation to unintentional injury death. A population-based cohort of 49,411 Swedish conscripts aged 18-20 years was followed for 35 years. The end-point of study was injury death up to 2004. The relationship between two family, four psychological and eight behavioural risk factors and injury death were analysed with Cox proportional hazards analyses and χ(2) tests. Among 485 unintentional injury deaths, 40% o

Multiple chronic diseases and quality of life: patterns emerging from a large national sample, Australia.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the importance of multiple chronic diseases (co-morbidities) to how people feel about their lives generally. To do this, we studied the associations between co-morbidities and indicators of quality of life and/or psychological distress. METHODS: Analysis of unit record cross-sectional data from Australian national surveys for the population aged 20 years or more. Identification of an appropriate indicator of multiple chronic diseases (i.e. co-morbidities). Use of logistic regression techniques to study associations between: (1) co-morbidities and demographic, socio-econo

Personality traits and adolescent anxiety: serial mediating roles of Red music cultural identification and self-identity.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescence is a critical period for personality formation and vulnerability to anxiety. Although personality traits are well-established predictors of adolescent anxiety, comparatively little research has examined the cultural mechanisms underlying this association. Drawing on culture-personality interaction theory, this study examined whether Red music cultural identification and self-identity sequentially mediate the association between Big Five personality traits and anxiety among Chinese adolescents. Specifically, we tested the pathway "Big Five personality traits → Red music c

Mismatched expectations regarding donor anonymity: the implications of Australians crossing-borders for egg donation in South Africa.

Some Australian women who require donor oocytes to achieve parenthood travel to South Africa, where egg donors are more readily available and egg donation comparatively affordable. In South Africa, egg donation arranged through donor agencies or egg banks is anonymous, whereas Australian las does not permit donor anonymity. This study explored Australian recipients' views on the implications of donor anonymity for their children, including the potential for future donor identification through direct-to-consumer genetic testing and social media. It also examined whether South African infertilit

Development and validation of a predictive model for weight loss psychological distress in obese patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Obese patients are more likely to experience psychological distress symptoms, such as low self-esteem, anxiety and depression. Approximately 18-55% of obese patients will encounter problems such as abdominal distension, purple skin lines and facial acne due to changes in their body shape and appearance. Establishing a predictive model for psychological distress in obese patients during the weight loss process, early identification of high-risk groups, and the adoption of proactive intervention measures can help reduce the incidence of psychological distress. AIMS: Explore the risk

Latent transition analysis of resilience in breast cancer patients and its association with sense of meaning in life: a longitudinal follow - up study.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a highly prevalent malignant tumor among women, showing a trend of younger onset. The disease - related stress can easily trigger an existential crisis and reduce the sense of meaning in life. However, the sense of meaning in life and psychological resilience are key psychological resources crucial for disease adaptation. Nevertheless, previous studies have mostly adopted cross - sectional designs, which limits the ability to clarify the dynamic evolution of these constructs. AIM: To explore the changes of latent categories of resilience over time in breast cancer

Stress-Inflammation Dysregulation and Biomarker Dynamics in Pediatric Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Pneumonia.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) is a common pediatric infection frequently accompanied by systemic inflammation and psychological stress; however, its potential bidirectional relationship remains poorly defined. We retrospectively analyzed 120 hospitalized children aged 5-12 years using the Child Stress Questionnaire (CSQ), inflammatory mediators (CRP, IL-6), and three clinical biomarkers (LDH, D-dimer, MP-DNA load). Elevated LDH and D-dimer were significantly associated with higher CSQ scores (r = 0.67, p < 0.01) and more severe inflammatory responses. Children with prolonged illness (>

Overview of axial skeleton injuries: burden of disease.

Axial skeletal injury and related illness is a major cause of medical disability and force attrition in deployed service members. Predeployment identification of at-risk personnel is unreliable. Risk of axial skeletal injury or illness during deployment is heterogeneous. Major spinal trauma casualties are uncommon, accounting for 1% of casualties, and are usually related to battle injuries. These major spinal injuries are often associated with multiple system/anatomic injuries. Spinal cord injuries account for 18% of major spinal injuries in persons with battle-related spinal injury. Non-battl

[A Danish fetal alcohol spectrum disorders definition].

The Danish Paediatric Society presents the first Danish definition of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) in a new guideline. FASD is an umbrella term for conditions caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. To varying degrees, fetal alcohol damages manifest as physical defects, characteristic facial features and poor growth, as well as behavioural and cognitive disorders. It requires both somatic and psychological evaluation to identify these damages. Early diagnosis and identification of problems are important for prognosis as professional care has a positive preventive effect on comorbiditie

Association of Burning Mouth Symptoms with Sleep Quality, Stress and Xerostomia in Middle-Aged and Elderly Patients - a Systematic Review.

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a long term syndrome of oral pains that is prevalent among the middle aged and the aged people. It is usually associated with poorly understood symptoms, including sleeping difficulties, psychological stress and xerostomia (dry mouth). The objective of the systematic review was to establish the association between the burning mouth symptoms and sleep quality, stress and xerostomia, through a systematic review of the literature at hand. A thorough electronic database search was carried out leading to the identification of 10 eligible studies, according to a set o

The butcher on the bus: A note on familiarity without recollection.

In 1980, George Mandler published an article in Psychological Review that has become very influential in the study of memory. As evidence, according to Google Scholar (as of August 17, 2020), this article has been cited 3,391 times. Writing about recognition memory, Mandler made a fundamental distinction between recognition involving familiarity and recognition involving recollection. Mandler introduced what has since become the label for his illustration, saying that "Specific identification of an event is not possible on the basis of its familiarity alone. The butcher-in-the-bus is one intui

Chronic fatigue in primary care attenders.

From 686 patients attending primary care physicians, 77 were identified by a screening procedure as having chronic fatigue. Of these, 65 were given a comprehensive psychological, social and physical evaluation. Seventeen cases (26%) met criteria for the chronic fatigue syndrome. Forty-seven (72%) received an ICD-9 diagnosis of whom 23 had neurotic depression, with a further 5 meeting criteria for neurasthenia. Forty-nine were 'cases' as defined by the revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R), and 42 if the fatigue item was excluded. Psychiatric morbidity was more related to levels of social

Psychosocial disturbances during and after pregnancy.

The identification of patients at risk for psychologically mediated complications during and after pregnancy should be a part of obstetric care. Psychologic assessment can be incorporated into routine prenatal evaluation. Typically, patients who cope poorly during pregnancy have had previous emotional difficulty. Transient emotional disturbances during the early stages of pregnancy are not unusual. Treatment consists of providing support, education, and opportunity for the patient to ventilate her feelings. These interventions can be provided by the sensitive primary care physician who is will
