This study represents the first epidemiological study based on the national registry of primary immunodeficiencies (PID) in Korea. Patient data were collected from 23 major hospitals. A total of 152 patients with PID (under 19 yr of age), who were observed from 2001 to 2005, have been entered in this registry. The period prevalence of PID in Korea in 2005 is 11.25 per million children. BACKGROUND: Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is the most common primary antibody deficiency syndrome in humans, but it remains a diagnosis of exclusion in most cases. Several genetically defined primary immunodeficiencies mimic CVID. BACKGROUND/AIM: The serum immunoglobulin levels are used routinely in clinical practice because they provide key information on the humoral immune status. This study aimed to determine the age-related reference values of serum immunoglobulin levels in healthy children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 330 healthy children, aged between 0 and 18 years, were included in this study. The serum immunoglobulin levels were measured using a nephelometric method in a total of 11 groups, each group consisting of 30 individuals, and IgG subclasses in 6 groups of children aged more than 2 years.

We present evidence here for two stages in B-memory cell development, the first of which is T independent and the second T dependent. For these studies, we use a new type of T-deficient mouse (allotype suppressed) which specifically lacks T-helper activity (Th) for a subset of memory B cells responsible for approximately 10% of the overall IgG antibody response. Two B-cell lines, 2F7 and 10C9, were established by single cell cloning from biopsies obtained from two acquired immune deficiency syndrome patients with Burkitt's lymphoma. Representation of the original tumors was verified by demonstration of (1) identical biallelic rearrangement of Ig genes for 2F7 and (2) shared idiotype for 10C9. Secretion of IgM and IgG in vitro by B cells from patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVI) has been used to classify the disease into three groups. On stimulation with anti-IgM and IL-2, group A patients' cells fail to secrete IgM or IgG, group B patients' cells secrete no IgG and significantly lower levels of IgM than normal cells, and group C patients' cells produce normal levels of both isotypes.
