Regional musculoskeletal pain. The knee.

Chronic knee pain is common at all ages, particularly in the elderly, among whom it has its greatest impact. Chronic knee pain is often ascr … ce of 'nutraceuticals' such as glucosamine as treatments for osteoarthritis has captured the public imagination and merits further study.

[HIV infection: relevant pediatric aspects].

After 15 years of intense AIDS research several fascinating new findings have recently produced real hope for people infected with HIV and n … rogression of HIV infection available. These new instruments also provided us with a more realistic imagination about pathogenesis and viral dynamics in HIV infection. In neonates prophylactic antiretroviral treatment of pregnant women already prevents two thirds of vertically acquired infections, and the vertical transmission rate may well continue to declin …

Stability and neurophysiological validity of graph connectivity features for non-stationary motor imagery BCIs.

Objective.Motor imagery (MI) Electroencephalography (EEG) brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) degrade under longitudinal non-stationarity, especially in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Functional connectivity (FC) has been proposed as an alternative feature space, but it remains unclear which FC estimators yield stable, class-informative features across sessions.Approach.Using a multi-session ALS EEG dataset, we computed a broad family of FC estimators per trial to form weighted graphs. We extracted edge weights and node strength features, and quantified (i) feature reproducibility and (ii)

The implicit power of positive thinking: The effect of positive episodic simulation on implicit future expectancies.

Previous research demonstrating that positive episodic simulation enhances future expectancies has relied on explicit expectancy measures. The current study investigated the effects of episodic simulation on implicit expectancies. Using the Future Thinking Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (FT-IRAP), participants made true/false decisions to indicate whether or not they expected positive/negative outcomes after adopting orientations consistent or inconsistent with an optimistic disposition. The outcome measure, DIRAP, was based on response time differences between consistent and inconsi

Defining and 'diagnosing' aphantasia: Condition or individual difference?

Research into the newly-coined 'condition' of 'aphantasia', an individual difference involving the self-reported absence of voluntary visual imagery, has taken off in recent years, and more and more people are 'self-diagnosing' as aphantasic. Yet, there is no consensus on whether aphantasia should really be described as a 'condition', and there is no battery of psychometric instruments to detect or 'diagnose' aphantasia. Instead, researchers currently rely on the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ) to 'diagnose' aphantasia. We review here fundamental and methodological problems af

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy during motor imagery and motor execution in healthy adults.

OBJECTIVES: Studies on the influence of motor imagery (MI) on brain structure and function are limited to traditional imaging techniques and the mechanism for MI therapy is not clear. By observing the brain activation mode during MI and motor execution (ME) in healthy adults, this study aims to use near-infrared brain imaging technology to provide theoretical basis for the treatment of MI. METHODS: A total of 30 healthy adults recruited to the public from June 2021 to August 2021. The MI and ME of the right knee movement served as the task mode. Block design was repeated 5 times alternately i

Generating odour imagery enhances brain activity in individuals with low subjective olfactory imagery ability.

Olfactory imagery (OI) is defined as the generation of odour images in the mind. There are large inter-individual differences regarding OI abilities. However, the neural representations of OI among individuals with high or low OI abilities are less understood. Participants with high or low OI abilities evaluated using the Vividness of Olfactory Imagery Questionnaire were recruited in this study. Brain activations were measured during a word cueing OI and visual imagery (VI) tasks using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In addition, the OI task was divided into two parts. In one par

CWT Based Transfer Learning for Motor Imagery Classification for Brain computer Interfaces.

BACKGROUND: The processing of brain signals for Motor imagery (MI) classification to have better accuracy is a key issue in the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). While conventional methods like Artificial neural network (ANN), Linear discernment analysis (LDA), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Support vector machine (SVM), etc. have made significant progress in terms of classification accuracy, deep transfer learning-based systems have shown the potential to outperform them. BCI can play a vital role in enabling communication with the external world for persons with motor disabilities. NEW METHODS: De

Ipsilateral printing in children's mirror-writing: a cause of specific learning disabilities?

Previous research has demonstrated that young children produce mirror-image letter-reversals when printing their names in a leftward direction from the midline or right margin of their writing paper. This ability is postulated to be an epiphenomenon of a symmetric, proximal (arm) stage of motor development that ontogenetically precedes lateralization of fine-motor distal (finger) control-a stage in which each arm can be controlled by either side of the brain. From this view, canonical writing in right hemi-space is contralaterally mediated by the left hemisphere and mirror-writing in left hemi

The causal role of negative imagery in social anxiety: a test in confident public speakers.

This study tests the causal role of negative self-imagery in social anxiety. Low public-speaking anxious volunteers rehearsed a negative self-image, a positive self-image or a control image prior to giving a speech. As predicted, the negative image group felt more anxious, believed they performed less well and reported more negative thoughts than the positive image group. These findings do not appear to be due to changes in state anxiety, since they remained unchanged when anxiety was controlled in an analysis of covariance. The negative image group also reported more anxiety than the control

Image and trauma.

In 1980, when the diagnosis of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was introduced into the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III), survivor guilt--a symptom long associated with trauma of the Holocaust and other extreme experiences--was included in the list of symptom criteria. But in the revised edition of the manual of 1987 (DSM-IIIR), survivor guilt was demoted to the status of merely an "associated feature" of the condition. Now that survivor guilt has disappeared from the official lexicon of trauma, shame has come to take its pl

Cognitive causes of social phobia: a critical appraisal.

This review examined critically studies issuing from the cognitive therapy (CT) model claiming to have unveiled cognitive causal factors of social phobia. Additionally, it examined outcome studies of CT-inspired interventions and other treatments having included measurements of cognitive constructs. Overall, we found no evidence consistently supporting the claim that social phobics are characterized by typical cognitive processes. Moreover, we found neither corroborating evidence for a controlling effect of such cognitive processes on social phobic conduct, nor consistent indications that cogn

Less impairment in face imagery than face perception in early prosopagnosia.

There have been a number of reports of preserved face imagery in prosopagnosia. We put this issue to experimental test by comparing the performance of MJH, a 34-year-old prosopagnosic since the age of 5, to controls on tasks where the participants had to judge faces of current celebrities, either in terms of overall similarity (Of Bette Midler, Hillary Clinton, and Diane Sawyer, whose face looks least like the other two?) or on individual features (Is Ronald Reagan's nose pointy?). For each task, a performance measure reflecting the degree of agreement of each participant with the average of t

[The "filling-in-trap". Our sences deceive us].

We use various strategies in order to attain a complete knowledge of reality. One of these is using "filling-in". What is and is not filling-in is discussed. The brain may process light which reaches the retina in two fundamentally different ways. The conclusion is that many a patient with perimetrically verifiable visual field defects with each eye separately experiences a complete image of his total surrounding. The quality of this image correlates to the neuronal capacity of the retina in question. What generally has been assumed to be due to filling-in is in this specific instance a newly

Emotional imagery in simple and social phobia: fear versus anxiety.

In a first study, phobic volunteer subjects (N = 60) reacted psychophysiologically with greater vigor to imagery of their own phobic content than to other fearful or nonaffective images. Imagery heart rate responses were largest in subjects with multiple phobias. For simple (dental) phobics, cardiac reactivity was positively correlated with reports of imagery vividness and concordant with reports of affective distress; these relationships were not observed for social (speech) phobics. In a second study, these phobic volunteers were shown to be similar on most measures to an outpatient clinical

Hypnosis: wherefore art thou?

The present paper focuses on the influences of social-political needs of various groups with interests in hypnosis (i.e., stage hypnotists, lay hypnotists, licensed practitioners, and researchers). While hypnosis is a specific topic of interest to groups with varying needs, it also serves as an example for other topics in psychology that may overlap the needs of other groups--especially practitioners and researchers. The identity given to hypnosis varies depending upon which particular group of persons is offering the identity, and the nature of the identity reflects each group's biases and ne

A New Old Way to Look at Airway Assessment.

Imagine performing an oral endotracheal intubation with the tongue totally absent from your line of sight of the laryngeal anatomy, including the glottis. The addition of the Angle's Classification of Malocclusion, a tool some may call archaic, should be added alongside airway assessment tools that dental surgeons and nurse anesthesiologists commonly use, such as the Mallampati Classification (or Mallampati Score), Thyromental Distance (TMD), Neck Range of Motion, Size of the Tongue, and Interincisor Distance, also called Intermaxillary Distance.

Technology You Can Swallow: Moving Beyond Wearable Sensors, Researchers Are Creating Ingestible Ones.

Around 6 p.m. each evening, the streets of Boston's suburbs come alive with the physically fit and those aspiring to be. They are runners, bikers, walkers, and scooter riders of all different body shapes and ages who would seem to have little in common except one thing-an electronic band wrapped around their wrist. For many of these people, it's hard to imagine life without the daily nagging from a personal health device to meet their daily prescript of 10,000 steps.
