[Study of immunological status in women with post-term pregnancy].

The aim of the work was to study immunological homeostasis by comparing the immune responses during physiological, post-term and prolonged p … en full-term and prolonged pregnancies, but in latter cases there was a trend towards deficiency of immunologic factors. Post-term pregnancy was characterized as an immunophatologic condition. It may be concluded that post-term newborns must be included into the high-risk group and be permanently observed by pediatricians.

[Cytogenetic studies in children with Acute Lymphocitic Leukemia-B in Costa Rica].

Chromosome analyses were performed on bone marrow of 177 pediatric patients with Acute Lymphocitic Leukemia at the "Hospital Nacional de Nifios". The standard cytogenetic techniques now belongs to the panel of mandatory analyses performed at diagnosis of our acute leukemia patients and represent a major advantage to be effective and independent prognostic factors, essential for therapeutic choices. Cytogenetic results were achieved in 83% of the bone marrow samples: normal karyotypes represented 29% and abnormal karyotypes 71% with the follow distribution: t(9;22) 3%; t(l;19) 5%; t(4;11) 3%, H

Rare clinical form in two patients affected by a new variant of endemic pemphigus in northern Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the authors described a new variant of endemic pemphigus foliaceus in rural areas surrounding El Bagre, Colombia, but without association with malignant tumors. METHODS: The authors' 10-year fieldwork provided the opportunity to observe various manifestations of El Bagre endemic pemphigus foliaceus, including the presence of bilateral plaques in pretibial areas. RESULTS: Based on personal experience and literature reviews, the authors have correlated the auto-antibody profile with the appearance of pretibial plaques. CONCLUSION: Since pretibial plaques occur in patient

Lupus nephritis: update on pathogenesis and disease mechanisms.

Immune-mediated nephritis is a common complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It is now clear that multiple and independent mechanisms contribute to disease onset and pathogenesis, which may explain the remarkable phenotypic and histopathological heterogeneity observed in human SLE. Identification and characterization of disease-relevant autoantibodies, cellular effectors, and soluble immune elements have provided crucial insight into the immunologic interactions that promote renal immune injury. It is now clear that nephritogenic autoantibodies of diverse specificity localize to t

Correlation between thoracic radiographic changes and remission/survival duration in 270 dogs with lymphosarcoma.

A retrospective study was undertaken wherein the medical records and thoracic radiographs of 270 dogs with lymphosarcoma were reviewed to determine the type and frequency of thoracic radiographic changes. Statistical evaluation of the relationship between radiographic, clinical and immunologic factors and the primary remission duration and survival times was performed using univariate and multivariate analysis. One hundred ninety-two dogs (71%) had some type of thoracic radiographic abnormality, including 80 dogs (29.6%) with pulmonary infiltrates and 164 dogs (64.4%) with thoracic lymphadenom…

Malnutrition associated with HIV/AIDS. Part One: Definition and scope, epidemiology, and pathophysiology.

A documented association exists between nutritional status and immunologic function, development, and outcome of infectious processes, and treatment-related toxicity and vital organ function. In persons with AIDS, nutritional deficits precipitate a cycle that results in a downward spiral of weight lost, malabsorption, diarrhea, anorexia, body image disturbance, and increased risk for morbidity and mortality. This article presents an overview of the malnutrition in HIV/AIDS patients. It critiques the current Centers for Disease Control's definitions of wasting syndrome, describes the incidence

Detection of Tropheryma whippelii DNA in a patient with AIDS.

A case of an AIDS patient infected with the Whipple's disease bacterium, Tropheryma whippelii, is reported. A DNA fragment with sequence specificity for the 16S rRNA gene of the bacterium was detected by PCR in a duodenal biopsy specimen from a 55-year-old male patient with AIDS and diarrhea. The biopsy specimen contained periodic acid-Schiff stain-positive macrophages which did not, however, resemble the sickleform-particle-containing cells characteristic of Whipple's disease. This observation raises two possibilities: either the patient had a coincidence of AIDS and Whipple's disease or Trop

Foot and ankle pain resulting from rheumatic conditions.

Pain in the foot and ankle is most frequently secondary to static and degenerative changes, eg, corns, hammer toes, bunions, anterior metatarsalgia, and heel pain. A second common group consists of rheumatologic disorders that encompass immune and hereditary factors. This group includes rheumatoid arthritis, the often underdiagnosed seronegative spondyloarthropathies, and, less commonly, crystalline deposit disorders and diffuse connective tissue diseases. Both the physician and the public need a heightened awareness of the existence and presence of these disorders, which may be devastating, e

Food hypersensitivity.

Food allergy is one of several causes of adverse reactions to foods. The underlying immunologic mechanism varies from one manifestation to another, hence no current single laboratory test can be expected to be positive in every case. The diagnosis could be suggested by information gathered from the medical history or screening procedures, such as trials of elimination diets, the food/symptom diary, skin testing, and in vitro-specific IgE antibody measurement. All foods suspected by any of the aforementioned methods should be subjected to verification by appropriate elimination-challenge testin

Malignant lymphoma and erythrophagocytosis simulating malignant histiocytosis.

Six patients with malignant lymphoma are described, in whom a syndrome that mimicked malignant histiocytosis clinically and pathologically developed as a terminal event. The clinical course was characterized by hepatosplenomegaly, fever, and a rapid fall in all hematologic counts. Survival from onset of this syndrome was less than six weeks. Pathologically, activation of benign histiocytes with marked erythrophagocytosis was seen throughout the reticuloendothelial system. Disseminated lymphoma was also evident but was grossly and microscopically segregated from the erythrophagocytic process. I

Stress, adaptation, and immunity: studies in humans.

The notion that some combination of excessive "stress" and inadequate coping may increase susceptibility to illness has long been part of our conventional wisdom. Yet, until recently, there have been few data to support this contention. During the past decade, the relationship between stress, adaptation, and human immunity has come under closer scrutiny. There is now considerable evidence that certain types of experimental and naturally-occurring stress are associated with alterations of human cellular immune function. Furthermore, these observed changes generally are immunosuppressive. Howeve

Case report: Antemortem diagnosis of central nervous system strongyloidiasis.

Strongyloidiasis is usually a benign illness confined to the gastrointestinal tract. However, dissemination (hyperinfection syndrome) may occur, particularly in patients with impaired cell-mediated immunity. The diagnosis of hyperinfection syndrome is often made postmortem, and mortality is high, even when the disease is recognized during life. Central nervous system involvement with Strongyloides stercoralis has previously been recognized in only a few cases at postmortem examination, and in one case antemortem. We describe a patient with disseminated strongyloidiasis in whom central nervous

Evidence for an etiologic relation of the Epstein-Barr virus to human malignancies.

Studies on virus-induced animal tumors have provided indirect approaches to a search for viruses causing human malignancies. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), the cause of infectious mononucleosis, served to illustrate the usefulness of these approaches in linking EBV with Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Despite its demonstrated intimate association with these tumors the role of EBV in their causation remains uncertain. While a passenger role seems excluded, it cannot be decided whether EBV is the primary or a secondary agent in the etiology of the tumors. If the primary cause, immuno

[Metastatic orbital tumors:a case of orbital metastasis in malignant melanoma of the skin (author's transl)].

The authors feel that orbital tumor metastases are more common than generally presumed. The occurence of orbital metastases of malignant melanomas of the skin is discussed in this paper. Until now 20 cases have been published. Therapy of metastases is an unsolved problem, immunologic factors might be of some importance. The authoress describes a case of histologically verified orbital metastasis of a primary malignant melanoma of the skin, which was surgical removed three years ago. In contrast to similar cases other haematogen tumor manifestations were absent first, and the orbital metastasis…

Factors influencing phagocytosis of malaria parasites: the story so far.

There are seven known species of Plasmodium spp. that can infect humans. The human host can mount a complex network of immunological responses to fight infection and one of these immune functions is phagocytosis. Effective and timely phagocytosis of parasites, accompanied by the activation of a regulated inflammatory response, is beneficial for parasite clearance. Functional studies have identified specific opsonins, particularly antibodies and distinct phagocyte sub-populations that are associated with clinical protection against malaria. In addition, cellular and molecular studies have enhan

Common variable immunodeficiency: a multifaceted and puzzling disorder.

Common variable immunodeficiencies (CVIDs) encompass a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia, recurrent infections and a variety of sequelae. Recently, genetic defects in ICOS, TACI, CD19, Msh5 and BAFF-R have been attributed as monogenic disease-causing or risk-increasing factors in the pathogenesis of CVIDs, but may explain only a minority of cases. By contrast, numerous immunological studies have revealed more- or less-common phenotypic and functional abnormalities of T cells, B cells and antigen-presenting cells in patients with CVID. Impaired terminal dif

Immunologic abnormality in Menière's disease.

Patients with Meniere's disease were investigated for possible immunologic abnormalities. A total of 104 cases--55 bilateral and 49 unilateral--were examined. Immune activity was assessed using four types of immune parameters: (1) the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein levels (CRP); (2) serum immunoglobulin levels (IgG, IgM, and IgA); (3) complement levels (C3, C4, and CH50); and (4) autoantibody levels (rheumatoid factor, anti-DNA antibody, and antinuclear antibody). Patients with severe immunologic abnormalities (16% of the bilateral cases and 2% of the unilateral ca

A blood-based liquid biopsy analyzing soluble immune checkpoints and cytokines identifies distinct neuroendocrine tumors.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) comprise a group of rare tumors originating from neuroendocrine cells, which are present in both endocrine glands and scattered throughout the body. Due to their scarcity and absence of specific markers, diagnosing NENs remains a complex challenge. Therefore, new biomarkers are required, ideally, in easy-to-obtain blood samples. METHODS: A panel of blood soluble immune checkpoints (sPD-L1, sPD-L2, sPD-1, sCD25, sTIM3, sLAG3, Galectin-9, sCD27, sB7.2 and sSIGLEC5) and cytokines (IL4, IL6, IP10 and MCP1) was quantified in a cohort of 139 NENs, includi

Bedside to bench: defining the immunopathogenesis of psoriatic arthritis.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an immune-mediated, systemic inflammatory disorder. PsA can present with heterogeneous clinical features. Advances in understanding the immunopathogenesis of PsA have helped to facilitate the development of agents targeting specific components of the dysregulated inflammatory and immune responses relevant to PsA. Interestingly, agents with distinct mechanisms of action have shown differential responses across the various disease domains of PsA, counter to what might have been expected from basic science investigations. Here, we review data utilizing various novel t
