OBJECTIVES: Previous work based on guidelines and expert opinion identified 'ideal' prescribing proportions-the overall proportion of consul … ract infection, upper respiratory tract infection, influenza-like illness, urinary tract infection, impetigo, acne, gastroenteritis) for 2013-15 were extracted from The Health Improvement Network (THIN) database. The proportions of consultations resulting in an antibiotic prescription were established, concentrating on acute presentations in patients witho …

BACKGROUND: Infectious skin disorders (ISDs) are commonly seen in pediatric emergency departments (PED), however the exact frequency is unkn … and 111 (6.6%) children, respectively. The most frequent ISDs according to the etiology group were impetigo 377 (22.4%), varicella 397 (23.6%), tinea capitis 10 (0.6%), and scabies 109 (6.5%). A higher frequency of ISDs were reported during the summer (38.4%) and spring (38.2%) months. Bacterial skin infections were more frequent during the summer months, …

Adult community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (CA-MSSA) skin and so … 1 SSTI patients were enrolled. Cutaneous abscess (40.7%) was the most common infection, followed by impetigo (6.8%) and cellulitis (4.8%). S. aureus accounted for 32.7% (164/501) of SSTIs. Five isolates (5/164, 3.0%) were CA-MRSA. The most dominant ST in CA-MSSA was ST398 (17.6%). The prevalence of Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (pvl) gene was 41.5% (66/159) …

Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) are common in military populations regularly living and training in close contact with each other. The majority of such infections are simple and can be easily treated with antibiotics and appropriate infection control practices. Some, however, can progress to become complex and even life threatening, such as Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL)-associated staphylococcus aureus pneumonia, or Streptococcus pyogenes necrotising fasciitis, which carry a mortality rate of up to 65% and 30%, respectively. This review focuses on the most important SSTIs and those

Statistical analysis was performed of the diseases seen and therapies utilized during the first two years of the Pediatric Dermatology Clinic at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Miami, Florida. This survey includes 2,821 patient visits made by 1,578 patients. This analysis classifies patients by diagnosis, sex, age, race, and treatment. Diagnostic and treatment frequencies, sex and race ratios, and trends in the patient's age at presentation are also noted. This survey reveals a wide spectrum of pediatric dermatologic disease with 154 different diagnoses made. A review of the 86 dif

Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is a rare, X-linked dominant genodermatosis caused by mutations in the IKBKG gene and characterized by sequential cutaneous stages following the lines of Blaschko. The highly inflammatory initial vesiculobullous stage frequently mimics severe neonatal infections, such as herpes simplex or bullous impetigo, leading to potentially dangerous diagnostic delays and unnecessary antimicrobial therapies. The objective of this report is to highlight the utility of multimodal medical imaging and clinico-pathologic correlation in the rapid diagnosis of early-stage IP. We prese…

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of scabies and impetigo is high in several Pacific Island countries and has led to the implementation of mass drug administration control strategies. Anecdotal clinical reports have suggested similarly high burdens of scabies and bacterial skin infection in French Polynesia, but formal prevalence data have been lacking. We aimed to determine the prevalence of scabies and bacterial skin infection in French Polynesia's two most populated islands: Tahiti and Mo'orea.
METHODS: We conducted a community-based cross-sectional survey. Our study was pragmatically restricte…

BACKGROUND: Ecthyma is a deeper form of impetigo involving the epidermis and dermis causing ulcerative plaques. Pathogens commonly responsible for the disease (group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus) typically afflicts children, presenting during early stages with skin lesions that can closely resemble other vesicular and ulcerative dermatoses, such as those observed in mpox infection. The ongoing global outbreak of monkeypox has escalated the urgency for clinicians to accurately differentiate between these conditions due to their overlapping dermatological manifestatio…
