Gambling and sexual behaviors in African-American adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: Late adolescence represents a developmental risk period when many youth become involved in multiple forms of high-risk behaviors with adverse consequences. This study assessed the degree to which two such behaviors, adolescent sexual behaviors and gambling, were associated in a community-based sample with a large African-American presence. STUDY DESIGN: Data are derived from a cohort study. This study focuses on 427 African-American participants with complete information on gambling and sexual behaviors by age 18 (72% of original cohort). Gambling involvement and related problems

REM sleep behavior disorder in Brunner syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Brunner syndrome is a recessive X-linked disorder characterized by intellectual disability and impulsive aggressiveness associated with monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) deficiency leading to increased monoaminergic activity. We report the presence of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder in a 46-year-old patient with Brunner syndrome due to a c.1438A > G/iVS14-2 A > G mutation of the MAOA gene. He has mild intellectual disability and psychotic disturbances. He presented a 15-year history of nightmares (chase, attacks, and fights), sleep-related vocalizations, and motor behavio

Types of Emotion Regulation and Their Associations with Gambling: A Cross-Sectional Study with Disordered and Non-problem Ecuadorian Gamblers.

This cross-sectional study was aimed at investigating the role of emotional regulation in regular gambling in a sample of 197 disordered and non-problem gamblers from Ecuador. Two proxies were used as measures of behavioral signs of generalized emotion dysregulation (UPPS-P emotion-driven impulsivity) and intentional emotion regulation strategies (ERQ), and their associations with gambling cognitions (as measured by the GRCS questionnaire), gambling behavior (SOGS), and comorbid alcohol and drug misuse (MultiCAGE), were explored. For analyses, impulsivity traits, including emotion-driven impul

Epidemiology of behavioral dependence: literature review and results of original studies.

The extension of the definition of dependence leads to the consideration of some impulsive disorders as a form of dependence disorder. This pathological condition is characterized by the repetitive occurrence of impulsive and uncontrolled behaviors. Other clinical characteristics are failure to resist an impulse, drive or temptation to perform some act harmful to oneself and/or others, an increasing sense of tension or excitement before acting out, and a sense of pleasure, gratification or release at the time of the behavior or shortly thereafter. Behavioral dependences most often described ar

Laboratory assessment of aggression: The Taylor Aggression Paradigm in adults with and without a disorder of impulsive aggression.

INTRODUCTION: The modified Taylor Aggression Paradigm (TAP) has been used to study impulsive aggression in experimental designs and has been relatively successful in addressing critiques of aggression paradigms; however, little has been done to examine the potential of using the TAP as a direct measure of aggression. This study aimed to explore the psychometric properties of the TAP behavioral indexes as measures of aggression. METHODS: A community sample of 962 adults were divided into three groups based on diagnostic assessments: Intermittent Explosive Disorder; Non-Aggressive Psychiatric D

A latent class analysis of intermittent explosive disorder symptoms.

Intermittent explosive disorder (IED), the sole diagnosis in the DSM-5 for which the cardinal symptom is recurrent affective aggressive outbursts, is a common and substantially impairing disorder. IED is also associated with several cognitive and affective impairments. However, little is known about the heterogeneity of the disorder and how this may correspond to aggression severity and related adverse outcomes. The current study employed a latent class analysis (LCA) among individuals diagnosed with lifetime DSM-5 IED to derive distinct subgroups that differed in the quality and/or frequency

Psychosis and concurrent impulse control disorder in Parkinson's disease: A review based on a case report.

Psychosis, impulse control disorders (e.g., pathological gambling and hypersexuality) and repetitive behaviors such as punding are known psychiatric complications of Parkinson's disease (PD). Impulsive, compulsive and repetitive behaviors are strongly associated with dopamine-replacement therapy. We present the case of a 58-year-old man with PD and a myriad of psychiatric symptoms. Concurrent psychosis, punding and pathological gambling developed more than six years after the introduction of pramipexole and ceased shortly after the addition of quetiapine and discontinuation of pramipexole. Sex and Genetic Differences in Behavioral Engagement of Crossed High Alcohol-Preferring and Low Alcohol-Preferring Mice.

Excessive levels of alcohol consumption play a major role in numerous alcohol-related harms, including a heightened risk of developing problematic drinking behaviors. Those who develop alcohol use disorder (AUD) often struggle with persistent difficulties in controlling their drinking, experience withdrawal symptoms, and engage in risky behaviors that pose danger to themselves and others. Advances in treating AUD may be supported by identifying specific cognitive and emotional factors that drive excessive alcohol consumption. Recognizing reliable behavioral biomarkers is instrumental in assess

[Pathological buying -- a literature review].

This review summarizes the literature on pathological buying published during the past 15 years. Pathological or compulsive buying is defined as frequent preoccupation with buying or impulses to buy that are experienced as irresistible, intrusive, and/or senseless. The buying behavior causes marked distress, interferes with social functioning, and often results in financial problems. Studies on the phenomenology, diagnosis, classification, comorbidity, epidemiology, and treatment are presented. Pathological buying should be diagnosed as impulse control disorder not otherwise specified (ICD-10

A comparison of adolescent inpatients with and without a history of violence perpetration: impulsivity, PTSD, and violence risk.

How childhood maltreatment and violence victimization contributes to subsequent violent behavior remains an understudied area. We examined 130 psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents and compared those with a history of perpetrating violence to those without a history of violence perpetration. Perpetrators of physical violence were significantly more likely to have been a victim and/or witness to family and community violence and also reported significantly higher levels of a broad range of psychopathology than nonperpetrators. Correlational analyses with the study group of violence perpetrat

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy for Adolescents With Impulsive Aggressive Behaviour: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Impulsive aggressive behaviour is highly prevalent among children and adolescents referred to mental health clinics. However, there is limited evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions for its treatment. This study examined the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) for adolescents with intermittent explosive disorder (IED). METHODS: This randomised controlled trial employed a pre-test/post-test design with a 3-month follow-up. Forty-two adolescents diagnosed with IED were recruited through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to either a CBT intervention

HIV-risk behaviors in adolescent substance abusers.

Thirty adolescents aged 12-18 years from each group (substance use disorders, psychiatric disorders, and controls) were assessed to explore HIV-risk behaviors and knowledge about HIV/AIDS. Semi-structured instruments for psychiatric and substance use disorders were also administered. There were no significant differences between groups in knowledge of HIV/AIDS. However, chi-square analysis of risk behaviors revealed significant differences between the substance use disorders group and the controls. The knowledge-behavior gap was greater for the substance users than all other groups, in that wh

Examining Associations of Borderline Personality Disorder Symptoms and Eating Disorder Diagnoses: Results From a US Representative Sample.

OBJECTIVES: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and eating disorders (EDs) are common comorbid diagnoses. Given the various combinations of borderline personality disorder symptoms (BPDS) that can comprise a diagnosis, understanding whether specific BPDS are more likely to be associated with an ED (anorexia nervosa [AN], bulimia nervosa [BN], and binge eating disorder [BED]) is important for the conceptualization and treatment of BPD-ED comorbidity. METHODS: This study used data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III) study, a nationally rep

Psychosocial factors affect the occurrence of nonsuicidal self-injury in adolescents with major depressive disorder through chain mediation.

In the adolescent group, about half of adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) have NSSI. Psychosocial factors are associated with the development of NSSI. Clarifying the relationship between psychosocial factors and NSSI in adolescents with MDD can help us achieve early prevent. Demographic data, Hamilton Depression Scale-24 (HAMA24), childhood trauma questionnaire, emotional intelligence scale and interpersonal reactivity index were collected from 187 adolescents with MDD. Use ANOVA, Chi-square test, Binary Logistic Regression, Pearson correlation analysis, Mediation effect analysis

Positive Emotion Dysregulation and Social Impairments in Adolescents with and without ADHD.

Although research suggests that emotion dysregulation may underlie adolescents' social impairments, studies have focused almost exclusively on the dysregulation of negative emotions. The present study addressed this gap in the literature by examining whether behavioral manifestations of positive emotion dysregulation are also implicated. A sample of 13-18-year-old adolescents (56.8% female) with and without a childhood diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was used, increasing variability in impairment profiles. Adolescents self-reported behavioral difficulties related t

Dysfunctional reward processing in male alcoholics: an ERP study during a gambling task.

OBJECTIVE: A dysfunctional neural reward system has been shown to be associated with alcoholism. The current study aims to examine reward processing in male alcoholics by using event-related potentials (ERPs) as well as behavioral measures of impulsivity and risk-taking. METHODS: Outcome-related negativity (ORN/N2) and positivity (ORP/P3) derived from a single outcome gambling task were analyzed using a mixed model procedure. Current density was compared across groups and outcomes using standardized low resolution electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA). Behavioral scores were also compared acro
