Urinary excretion of Cytomegalovirus and the presence of serum antibodies against CMV were examined in 79 HIV-1-infected patients at different stages of the disease, as well as in 27 heterosexual and 52 male homosexual controls and correlated to clinical and laboratory results. The fact that unadaptive neurotic anxiety response habits are learned makes it necessary for the stimulus antecedents to be accurately defined in every case in order to plan effective treatment. This requirement has been frequently neglected in recent years that have witnessed a growing tendency to apply common treatments to cases with common labels, e.g. agoraphobia. This paper argues for the desirability of accurate individual diagnosis, and illustrates its benefits in unique cases and also in respect of three common syndromes--agoraphobia, panic attacks and depression.

Concentrations of IgG2, IgG4 and IgE were low in 16, 24 and 20% of 25 persons with selective IgA deficiency. Fifty-two per cent had IgD concentrations below 5 iu/ml. Trends for association between any of these parameters and the presence of clinical symptoms were not significant. All patients, except one, had normal amounts of Ig-bearing lymphocytes in the blood. IgG1 antibodies against casein were increased in titre and frequency, whereas IgG4 antibodies were normal. Similar results were found in other sera from persons with selective IgA deficiency.

Eighteen families each with two or more cleft lip and palate patients were studied by speech cephalometry for evidence of velopharyngeal inadequacy (VPI). With this total of 56 persons, three groups were recognized: 1) patients with cleft lip only (N = 7), 2) unaffected sibs of CL(P) probands and the unaffected parents with the positive clefting history on their side of the family (N = 33), and 3) unaffected parents with negative CL(P) history to their side of the family (N = 16). The latter served as controls. The velopharyngeal mechanism in function was evaluated by voicing the fricative/S/.

Among 993 visually impaired mentally retarded persons 86 had microphthalmos or colobomata. The aetiology was prenatal infections in 16 cases, 6 had chromosomal aberrations, syndromes previously described were present in 14, private syndromes in 3. Although the malformation association observed in 36 patients had been previously described, it was impossible to assess whether the individual cases were due to environmental or genetic causes, and in 11 cases the associations were apparently previously undescribed.

Thirty-three patients in long-term individual therapy were referred to one of three weekend groups: two experimental (affect-arousing, gestalt therapy) groups and one control (meditation-Tai Chi) group. Seven selected hypertensive patients were stabilized on drugs at a research clinic. Subjects learned transcendental meditation (T.M.), were seen weekly, and took their own blood pressure several times daily. After 12 weeks of T.M. six subjects showed psychological changes and reduced anxiety scores. Six subjects also showed significant reductions in home and four in clinic blood-pressures. Six months later four subjects continued to derive psychological benefit and two showed significant blood-pressure reductions attributable to T.M. at home and clinic.

A report is given on a patient with ischaemic heart disease, whose recompensation in tachyarrhythmia absoluta was for some times possible only by means of unusually high doses of digitoxin (fully effective dose to 5.72 mg, maintenance dose to 0.4 mg). The patient survived a severe decompensation with pulmonary oedema, which appeared under "normal" applications of glycosides, 2 1/2 years under this therapy. Thus it must again be referred to an individual glycoside treatment.

Ten physiological indices on each mouse were measured before an exposure to ionizing radiation. The exposure of mice to 700R of X-rays induced 45% mortality within 30 days. A prediction of death or life of each mouse was done by a multidimensional quantification. The highest success rate of prediction was obtained by using all ten indices and it resulted in 74.1%. Accordingly, it was possible to predict death of individual mice exposed to a dose around LD50 (30) with a high rate of success.
