Increase of Human Milk Fat Inducing Nutritional Ketosis in Exclusively Breastfed Infant, Brought About by Treating the Mother With Ketogenic Dietary Therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Medicalized Ketogenic Therapy is commonly used to treat refractory epilepsy. Patients have varying degrees of seizure or symptom relief, responding at individual levels of ketone production. Typically, initiating the therapy necessitates the discontinuation of breastfeeding. Our case study mother was keen to continue breastfeeding if possible. We were able to achieve this by placing the healthy mother on a ketogenic diet and altering the composition of the mother's own milk. MAIN LACTATION ISSUE: Pediatric Medicalized Ketogenic Therapy is delivered through a ketogenic diet consi

[Importance of proper nutrition before and during pregnancy].

Maternal nutrition before and during pregnancy may influence the course of the pregnancy, foetal development and the child's health in its early and also adult life. Maternal underweight before pregnancy (BMI<19.8 kg/m2) and low pregnancy weight gain may increase the risk of low infant birth weight. There is accumulating evidence that persons who were born with low body mass are more susceptible to insulin-independent diabetes, arterial hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and ischaemic heart disease, than those whose birth weight was normal. Recommendations concerning pregnancy weight gain are

Clinical spectrum of food allergies: a comprehensive review.

Food allergy is defined as an adverse immune response towards food proteins or as a form of a food intolerance associated with a hypersensitive immune response. It should also be reproducible by a double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge. Many reported that food reactions are not allergic but are intolerances. Food allergy often presents to clinicians as a symptom complex. This review focuses on the clinical spectrum and manifestations of various forms of food allergies. According to clinical presentations and allergy testing, there are three types of food allergy: IgE mediated, mixed (I

Feeding skill milestones of preterm infants born with extremely low birth weight (ELBW).

AIM: To compare the feeding development of preterm infants with that of full-term infants. PARTICIPANTS: Nineteen preterm infants with extremely low birth weight, and 11 healthy full-term infants. METHODS: Intensive follow-up study. Feeding situations were analyzed by NOMAS (Neonatal Oral Motor Assessment Scale) and by an oral motor patterns checklist based on video recorded sessions. RESULTS: Most of the preterm infants showed a disorganized sucking pattern and most of the full-term infants a normal sucking pattern, as long as suckling was present. However, the early suckling pattern did n

Vegetable and Fruit Acceptance during Infancy: Impact of Ontogeny, Genetics, and Early Experiences.

Many of the chronic illnesses that plague modern society derive in large part from poor food choices. Thus, it is not surprising that the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, aimed at the population ≥2 y of age, recommends limiting consumption of salt, fat, and simple sugars, all of which have sensory properties that we humans find particularly palatable, and increasing the variety and contribution of fruits and vegetables in the diet, to promote health and prevent disease. Similar recommendations may soon be targeted at even younger Americans: the B-24 Project, led by the US Department of Health

Occurrence of Methylmercury in Rice-Based Infant Cereals and Estimation of Daily Dietary Intake of Methylmercury for Infants.

Recent reports of elevated levels of methylmercury (MeHg) in rice revealed the possible occurrence of MeHg in infant rice cereals, leading to potential MeHg exposure through cereal consumption. Total mercury (THg) and MeHg levels in 119 infant cereal samples commonly marketed in the United States and China and estimated daily intake of MeHg through cereal consumption were determined. Concentrations of THg and MeHg in the tested cereal samples ranged from 0.35 to 15.9 μg/kg and from 0.07 to 13.9 μg/kg with means of 2.86 and 1.61 μg/kg, respectively. Rice-based cereals contained MeHg levels sign

Anaphylaxis caused by inhaled pavlova mix in egg-sensitive children.

Two cases of anaphylactic reactions that occurred in young children with clinical hypersensitivity to egg protein after their exposure to a pavlova mix (which contains powdered egg-white) are described. The exposure took place when a packet of pavlova mix was opened and its contents were transferred into a bowl by adults. Although the children were in the same room, no direct contact was made. This indicates that the exposure occurred by way of the inhalational route. Clinical sensitivity to eggs is common in infancy and early childhood. Parents of children who have experienced immediate hyper

Understanding cultural differences when advising mothers about feeding choices.

Cultural teachings and practices greatly influence a mother's feeding decisions. It is important for all health care professionals to understand the cultures within their community and how various beliefs impact infant nutrition. For example, studies have shown the African American and Hispanic mothers are more likely to gain feeding information from family members. There are significant misconceptions being passed down through the generations which can lead to serious nutritional problems, such as overfeeding and the early introduction of cow's milk and food.

Oral-motor dysfunction and feeding problems in infants with myelodysplasia.

Oral motor function and feeding problems have received little attention in infants with myelomeningocele (MMC). We compared objective video assessments of oral motor skills, diet and feeding function of 20 infants (aged 6 months) with MMC, with data from 20, age, gender, and socioeconomically matched healthy infants using the Feeding Assessment Schedule (FAS), Feeding Environment Check (FEC), Tester's Ratings of Infant Behaviour (TRIB), an Infant Feeding Questionnaire (IFQ), and a 24 hour dietary analysis (DQA). MMC infants had significant feeding difficulty, related to sensory motor integrati

Thiamin inadequacy in infants: lack of evidence of amprolium in egg yolk.

This study investigated the hypothesis that the consumption of egg yolks might lead to thiamin inadequacy in infants because of the possible contamination of the egg yolks with amprolium. Earlier workers showed that the presence of amprolium in the diet inhibits the absorption of thiamin. Amprolium is added to some poultry feeds to control coccidiosis: it is readily incorporated in the egg yolk and egg yolk is one of the solid foods offered to infants at weaning. We found that under current commercial poultry feeding practices in WA it is extremely unlikely that any amprolium would be present

Impact of Maternal Nutrition on Human Milk Macronutrients Among Thai Mothers of Premature Infants.

PURPOSE: To identify factors affecting macronutrient levels in human milk (HM) from mothers of preterm infants in Thailand by examining maternal diet and body mass index (BMI). BACKGROUND: HM fortification has become standard care to meet preterm infant's nutritional needs, but macronutrient content varies throughout lactation, leading to challenges in managing HM nutrients. Understanding maternal nutrition factors affecting HM macronutrients should be considered. METHOD: In this observational study, 47 mothers of premature infants were selected through convenience purposive sampling between

A village-matched evaluation of providing a local supplemental food during pregnancy in rural Bangladesh: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal balanced protein energy supplementation consumed by undernourished women improves mid-upper arm circumference in early infancy. This study aimed to identify whether locally produced maternal food-based supplementation improved anthropometric measures at birth and early infancy. METHODS: A village-matched evaluation, applying principles of a cluster randomised controlled trial, of a locally produced supplemental food to 87 undernourished pregnant women. 12 villages (intervention: n = 8; control: n = 4) in Pirganj sub-district, Rangpur District, northern Bangladesh. Effect of mode of delivery and feeding practices on acquisition of oral Streptococcus mutans in infants.

OBJECTIVE: It is a well-established fact that colonization of S. mutans occurs early in life. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between mode of delivery and other associating factors with colonization of oral S. mutans in the infants. METHODS: The newborns were divided into two groups according to the mode of delivery: Infants who were delivered by either caesarean section (Group-C) or vaginally (Group-V). A total number of 60 mother-infant pairs were included and followed for 1 year. The swab samples were collected for the detection of S. mutans. RESULTS: Analysis of

Skin microbiome composition and function in the development of atopic diseases during infancy.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD), food sensitization (FS), and food allergy (FA) frequently co-occur in infancy, but the factors driving distinct atopic phenotypes remain unclear. While FLG null mutations are major genetic risk factors for AD, they explain only a fraction of disease heritability, suggesting a potential role for the skin microbiome. OBJECTIVE: To determine how early-life skin microbiome composition and its interaction with host genetics contribute to distinct atopic phenotypes in infancy. METHODS: We analyzed >1,000 skin swabs from 429 infants in the VITALITY cohort using d

Parent-Reported Adverse Childhood Experiences and Food Insecurity Among Children in Non-English-Speaking Households in the United States.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events associated with the risk of food insecurities in the United States (U.S). However, there is a scarcity of studies investigating this association, particularly for children in non-English-speaking households. Therefore, this study examines the association between individual and cumulative ACEs with food insecurity for children in non-English-speaking households in the U.S. Using data extracted from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health, the weighted sample of 4,677 children aged 0 to 17 was obtained. The dependent var

Impact of the Benazir Nashonuma Programme on maternal and child health and nutrition in Pakistan: protocol for a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal and child malnutrition continues to pose a considerable public health challenge in Pakistan, leading to increased instances of stunting, low birth weight and micronutrient deficiencies. The Government of Pakistan has instituted the Benazir Nashonuma Programme (BNP), a conditional cash transfer and specialised nutrition effort designed to assist pregnant and lactating mothers as well as young children. This prospective cohort study seeks to assess the effectiveness of the BNP in enhancing maternal and infant health and nutritional outcomes in the high-burden provinces of

A Developmental Texture Framework for Food Texture Progression: Implications for Feeding Development, Oral Motor Skills, and Pediatric Feeding Disorder.

The introduction of food textures in a child's first 2 years of life plays a vital role in growth, nutrition, and feeding development. However, the absence of a standardized texture framework for studying texture progression limits both pediatric feeding research and the ability to diagnose pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) based on age-appropriate expectations. To address this gap, authors Delaney and Goday proposed data sharing from the Nestlé Feeding Infant-Toddler Study (FITS) to explore texture progression and define age-appropriate texture expectations. In response, Nestlé assembled a mul
