An Interdisciplinary Treatment Approach for Congenitally Missing Teeth: A Case Report.

The absence of teeth from birth, also known as congenitally missing teeth (CMT) or hypodontia, is quite common, and generally, treatment is expensive. Patients with missing teeth can have more than just a poor appearance. They might also experience malaligned teeth, gum damage, poor jawbone growth, trouble chewing, unclear speech, and other issues. Treatment is often expensive and involves multiple specialties. This common but costly issue is important to many dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, prosthodontics, periodontics, maxillofacial surgery, anatomy, and even

Creation and implementation of a urinary tract infection diagnostic and treatment algorithm for psychiatric inpatients with a communication barrier.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is considered a common cause of mental status changes, particularly in elderly patients and patients with a psychiatric condition. Genitourinary symptoms are essential to confirm UTI diagnosis but may be unobtainable in patients with a communication barrier. Sparse guidance suggests assessing specific symptoms that do not rely on patient report. The primary objective of this project was to provide assistance in diagnosis and treatment of UTIs in noncommunicative patients through the creation of an algorithm. ALGORITHM CREATION AND IMPLEMENTATION: Thro

Interdisciplinary Implementation of the International Evidence-Based Guideline for the Assessment and Management of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Care Gaps and Knowledge Deficits in Key High-Burden Domains.

OBJECTIVES: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders among women of reproductive age and is associated with significant metabolic, reproductive, and psychological morbidity. Although international evidence-based guidelines exist, patient reports continue to indicate unmet needs, particularly in areas that most affect quality of life. The primary objective of this study was to assess PCOS-related knowledge, as well as general practitioners' (GPs) perceptions and interdisciplinary communication practices. A secondary objective was to examine whether identifi

Mendelian randomization applied to migraine research: Opportunities and challenges.

Observational studies have linked migraine to a wide range of risk factors and diseases, although the causality of these associations is uncertain. Mendelian randomization (MR) is an analytic paradigm that exploits germline genetic variants as natural experiments, providing a framework for causal inference from observational data. In this narrative review, we summarize the core principles and assumptions of MR and highlight methodological considerations unique to its application to migraine research. We review key MR findings across several domains of migraine research, noting areas of consist

Neuroimmunology of Epilepsy: Mechanisms, Treatments, and Clinical Insights.

Immune-mediated epilepsies represent an etiologically unique category defined by immune activation within the central nervous system that initiates a pathophysiological cascade resulting in seizures, encephalopathy, and sometimes epileptogenesis with long-term epilepsy. Once considered rare and largely confined to paraneoplastic or postinfectious syndromes, immune-mediated and inflammatory mechanisms are now recognized across a broad spectrum ranging from acute autoimmune encephalitis with reversible seizures, new-onset refractory status epilepticus, or febrile illness-related refractory statu

New directions for Nitric Oxide - Focused, rapid, and forward-looking.

Nitric Oxide is entering a new phase, marked by a redefinition of its scope, editorial policies, and structural organization. Reflecting the evolution of the nitric oxide field toward a broader focus on small molecule signaling in redox biology and medicine, the journal now explicitly welcomes mechanistic, translational, and interdisciplinary studies, including work on hydrogen sulfide, persulfides, and carbon monoxide. Key editorial changes include a streamlined peer review process eliminating major revisions, invitation-only review articles, and accelerated decision timelines. A newly appoin…

The Inflammatory Bridge Between Type 2 Diabetes and Neurodegeneration: A Molecular Perspective.

Chronic low-grade inflammation is a hallmark of both metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. In recent years, several studies have highlighted the pivotal role of systemic metabolic dysfunction, particularly insulin resistance, in shaping neuroinflammatory processes and contributing to impaired cognitive performance. Among metabolic disorders, type 2 diabetes mellitus has emerged as a major risk factor for the development of age-related neurodegenerative conditions, suggesting a complex and bidirectional crosstalk between peripheral metabolic imbalance and central nervous system function. Th

The midfacial segment pain: little known disorder in need of scientific evaluation.

Despite its inclusion in the International Classification of Orofacial Pain, tension-type orofacial pain has little support in the scientific literature. However, a similar-in-phenotype orofacial pain perceived in the middle segment of the face has been described by few case series from mostly ear, nose and throat clinics. The authors of these descriptions used the term 'midfacial segment pain'. Patients had no significant sinonasal disorder in these studies, but experienced symmetrical pain perceived mostly over the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses. No aura or autonomic symptoms were present apa

The Johns Hopkins Activity and Mobility Promotion Program: A Framework to Increase Activity and Mobility Among Hospitalized Patients.

BACKGROUND: Greater mobility and activity among hospitalized patients has been linked to key outcomes, including decreased length of stay, increased odds of home discharge, and fewer hospital-acquired morbidities. Systematic approaches to increasing patient mobility and activity are needed to improve patient outcomes during and following hospitalization. PROBLEM: While studies have found the Johns Hopkins Activity and Mobility Promotion (JH-AMP) program improves patient mobility and associated outcomes, program details and implementation methods are not published. APPROACH: JH-AMP is a syste

History of the plague of 1720-1722, in Marseille.

The plague epidemic of 1720-1722 had a profound effect on the history of the city of Marseille. A subject of numerous scientific studies and a source of inspiration for novels, one of the last great European epidemics is well-documented. In this article, we have sought to draw on the numerous documents left by the administrative services of the time or by the writings of survivors recounting their vision of the situation. We have completed this historical approach by referring to the study of mass graves of plague victims and will show how the simultaneous reading of two types of archives (his

[The epidemic and prevention of plagues in modern Shanghai].

It was found that a variety of plagues were prevalent in Shanghai at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, by analysing and synthesising the epidemic situation, the causes of the epidemic, the social impact, and prevention and control measures. These plagues led to serious social harm and economic losses. Their causes were believed closely related to some factors, such as urban environment, population flow, and climate changes. Their prevention appeared to be applicable and effective. The Shanghai concession and Chinese authorities organised society to fight a

Parasite Sensing of Host Nutrients and Environmental Cues.

Parasites undergo complex life cycles that comprise a wide variety of cellular differentiation events in different host compartments and transmission across multiple hosts. As parasites depend on host resources, it is not surprising they have developed efficient mechanisms to sense alterations and adapt to the available resources in a wide range of environments. Here we provide an overview of the nutritional needs of different parasites throughout their diverse life stages and highlight recent insights into strategies that both hosts and parasites have developed to meet these nutritional requi

Rare and Common Variants Conferring Risk of Tooth Agenesis.

We present association results from a large genome-wide association study of tooth agenesis (TA) as well as selective TA, including 1,944 subjects with congenitally missing teeth, excluding third molars, and 338,554 controls, all of European ancestry. We also tested the association of previously identified risk variants, for timing of tooth eruption and orofacial clefts, with TA. We report associations between TA and 9 novel risk variants. Five of these variants associate with selective TA, including a variant conferring risk of orofacial clefts. These results contribute to a deeper understand

Registries for Biliary Atresia and Related Disorders.

Most neonatal cholestatic disorders are rare diseases (RD), but they represent the leading indication for pediatric liver transplantation. From the pediatric surgical point of view, biliary atresia (BA) and choledochal cyst are from particular interest because diagnostic pathways and therapeutic algorithms are diverging as well as outcome parameters of follow-up studies. In addition, screening programs for BA are still at an early stage while transition of those patients with and without liver transplantation is not established yet. The newly created Web site www.bard-online.com focuses on BA

Bridging philosophical and practical implications of incidental findings in brain research.

Empirical studies and ethical-legal analyses have demonstrated that incidental findings in the brain, most commonly vascular in origin, must be addressed in the current era of imaging research. The challenges, however, are substantial. The discovery and management of incidental findings vary, at minimum, by institutional setting, professional background of investigators, and the inherent differences between research and clinical protocols. In the context of human subjects protections, the challenges of disclosure of unexpected and potentially meaningful clinical information concern privacy and

The Systemic Link Between Oral Health and Cardiovascular Disease: Contemporary Evidence, Mechanisms, and Risk Factor Implications.

BACKGROUND: Oral health plays a critical role in systemic wellbeing, with growing evidence supporting strong associations between oral conditions and cardiovascular disease (CVD). These connections extend beyond periodontal disease and involve oral microbiota imbalance, systemic inflammation, and oral side effects of cardiovascular pharmacotherapy. OBJECTIVE: To explore these links, a narrative literature review was performed using PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect, covering studies published between 2000 and 2025. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, a

A One Health Review of Community-Acquired Antimicrobial-Resistant Escherichia coli in India.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens to undermine nearly a century of progress since the first use of antimicrobial compounds. There is an increasing recognition of the links between antimicrobial use and AMR in humans, animals, and the environment (i.e., One Health) and the spread of AMR between these domains and around the globe. This systematic review applies a One Health approach-including humans, animals, and the environment-to characterize AMR in Escherichia coli in India. E. coli is an ideal species because it is readily shared between humans and animals, its transmission can be tra
