Interferon (IFN)-alpha receptor mRNA expression in liver of patients with chronic hepatitis C has been shown to be a response to IFN-alpha therapy. The objective of the present study was to determine whether the expression of mRNA for subunit 1 of the IFN-alpha receptor (IFNAR1) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) is associated with the response to IFN-alpha in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Thirty patients with positive anti-HCV and HCV-RNA, and abnormal levels of alanine aminotransferase in serum were selected and treated with IFN-alpha 2b for one year. Those with HBV or HIV inf

Hairy cell leukaemia is an uncommon B cell chronic lymphoproliferative disorder characterised by circulating lymphocytes displaying prominent cytoplasmic projections. Therapy is initiated for severe cytopenias or recurrent infections. Splenectomy, the first standard treatment, is now less commonly used as primary treatment. Interferon-alpha (IFN alpha) induces partial responses in most patients but complete responses in only a few. Adverse effects from IFN alpha are common but not life-threatening. The ability of two newer purine analogues, pentostatin (2'-deoxycoformycin) and cladribine (2-ch

Cytokine levels were compared in aqueous extracts of stratum corneum from psoriatic lesions and normal heel. Samples from heel contained high levels of interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) and beta measured in immunoassays, although only the IL-1 alpha was biologically active. No other cytokines could be detected in heel samples. Interleukin-1 (IL-1) levels were dramatically reduced in lesional samples. A neutrophil chemoattractant was found in all lesional extracts, and was demonstrated to be mainly interleukin-8 (IL-8) using a specific neutralizing antiserum. Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alp

Viral pathogens, particularly influenza and SARS-CoV-2, pose a significant global health challenge. Given the immunomodulatory properties of human milk oligosaccharides, in particular 2'-fucosyllactose and 3-fucosyllactose (3-FL), we investigated their dietary supplementation effects on antiviral responses in mouse models. This study revealed distinct immune modulations induced by 3-FL. RNA-sequencing data showed that 3-FL increased the expression of interferon receptors, such as Interferon Alpha and Beta Receptor (IFNAR) and Interferon Gamma Receptor (IFNGR), while simultaneously downregulati

Both gamma- and alpha-interferons (IFNs) have been shown to induce clinical responses in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). The mechanisms behind these effects are not known. In chronic phase CML, granulocytic progenitors normally found in the bone marrow only, are found extramedullary. A defect in the adhesion of CML cells, that may be responsible for this finding, has been described earlier. In this study, we have investigated whether IFN can restore the defect in CML cell adhesion. It was found that gamma-, but not alpha-IFN, strongly induced the adhesion of CML cells to other cells and to

Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is a malignant clonal disorder of the haematopoietic stem cell. Treatment of CML patients with interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) has induced haematological and cytogenetic remission. Interferons transcriptionally activate target genes through the JAK-STAT and interferon regulated factors (IRFs) family pathways. Interferon regulated factor-1 (IRF-1) is a transcriptional activator of genes critical for cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis. The skipping of exons 2 or 2 and 3 of IRF-1 in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myelogenous leukaemia sugges

In the 35 years since the discovery of interferon, significant biological activity has been described for interferon-alpha (IFN alpha) in various cancers, particularly haematological malignancies such as hairy cell leukaemia and chronic myelogenous leukaemia. Except for localised therapy in bladder and ovarian cancer, activity against most solid tumours has been disappointing. Other notable exceptions include Kaposi's sarcoma, renal cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma, tumours known to be susceptible to immunological attack. More recently, broad spectrum antiviral activity has been demonstra

BACKGROUND: To investigate the differences of interferon-alpha/beta receptor 2 (IFNAR2) mRNA expression level in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) between different stages of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and to determine the correlation with the effectiveness of interferon therapy.
METHODOLOGY: 58 patients, positive for anti-HCV antibodies, were divided into three groups depending on their clinical symptoms: acute hepatitis (4 cases), chronic hepatitis (46 cases) and liver cirrhosis (8 cases). 15 volunteers served as healthy controls. PBMCs were purified by density gradient cent

INTRODUCTION: Darier's erythema annulare centrifugum (EAC) is a disease of unknown etiology. Some observations of EAC in infancy suggest a better prognosis for early EA. The observations presented herein gives different information regarding prognosis and pathogenesis.
OBSERVATION: A child presents with typical lesions of EAC from early infancy up to the age of 15 years. Laboratory data are normal. Similar lesions were locally reproduced by intradermal injection by candidine but antifungal drugs were unsuccessful. Many antiinflammatory treatments failed to improve the disease. Because of the

Studies of interferon status, carried out in patients with mycosis fungoides treated by different therapeutic schemes, included simultaneous determination of three major parameters: interferon circulating in the blood and ability for alpha-interferon production by the leukocytes and for gamma-interferon production by the lymphocytes. The ability of mononuclear cells for interferon production was found essentially depressed in the patients during all three stages of the diseases as against that in healthy donors. The results evidence that reaferon therapy restores cellular ability for alpha-int

The management of acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection after renal transplantation (RT) remains controversial, due to the potential risk of interferon-induced graft dysfunction. There is little experience with combined interferon and ribavirin therapy in this group of patients. We treated four consenting RT recipients who developed acute de novo HCV infection with a combination of interferon-alpha 2b and ribavirin. After 48 weeks' treatment, sustained virologic and biochemical remission were achieved in three patients infected with HCV genotypes 1a, 2, and 6a, respectively. The median time

The potential synergistic anti-myeloma effect for thalidomide combining with interferon alpha was not yet clear clinically. From March 2001 to January 2004, a total of 28 heavily pretreated multiple myleoma (MM) patients were enrolled in this open-labeled, randomized Phase II study. Patients with refractory MM were randomized to receive either thalidomide alone (200 mg/day up to the maximum dose 800 mg/day, arm B) or the combination of thalidomide and interferon alpha (3 MIU/m(2) subcutaneous injection 3 times weekly, arm A). The objective of this study was to compare the safety and efficacy o

Many apparently healthy cows show marked inflammatory conditions around calving, associated with endocrine and metabolic changes. To prevent the above conditions, a low-dose, oral interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) treatment was carried out on periparturient, multiparous dairy cows. In the first trial, 10 cows received 10 IU of IFN-alpha/kg of BW daily during the last 2 wk of pregnancy. In a second trial, 4 cows received 0.5 IU of IFN-alpha/kg of BW daily until d 5 of lactation. In both trials, a homogenous group of untreated dairy cows was used as control. All cows were monitored, during the month

Data accumulated in scientific literature indicate that Parkinson's disease develops after infections caused by SARS-CoV-2, West Nile, Coxsackie, St. Louis viruses, Japanese encephalitis B, hepatitis B and C, influenza A, HIV, herpes viruses, flaviviruses. Neuroinvasive West Nile viruses and HIV activate expression of alpha-synuclein. Influenza A, SARS-CoV-2, and Coxsackie B3 viruses promote aggregation of alpha-synuclein, which has the biophysical characteristics of antiviral peptides and is required for neuronal interferon-stimulated gene expression. These mechanisms can be triggers of Parki

Polycythemia vera is a Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by the clonal proliferation of hematopoietic cells, leading to the overproduction of erythrocytes and the elaboration of inflammatory cytokines. Management is aimed at reducing the risk of thromboembolic events, alleviating the symptom burden, decreasing splenomegaly, and potentially mitigating the risk of disease progression. Existing treatment options include therapeutic phlebotomy and cytoreductive agents including hydroxyurea, pegylated recombinant interferon alpha 2a, ropegylated recombinant
