Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) challenges intensive dairy production in Ethiopia and implementation of the test and slaughter control strategy is not economically acceptable in the country. Protein contact dermatitis (PCD) in food handlers is caused by a type I allergy to foods. We report a 17-year-old meat sorter who presented with hand dermatitis. Patch tests with the standard series were negative. Prick testing was positive with lamb liver, ox liver and a mixture of lamb and beef blood. We also summarize seven cases of other food workers with PCD.

We report on two latex-allergic subjects who developed local hypersensitivity reactions after their lung compliance was measured by an oesophagus balloon catheter. Protein and allergen analyses of this catheter showed values of 85 and 9.8 micrograms per gram rubber. It is concluded that latex-allergic subjects should not undergo examinations with latex allergen-containing catheters. To our knowledge, this is the first report on allergic reactions caused by latex balloons of an oesophagus catheter.

One hundred suspected allergic dogs were skin-tested with 9 food extracts, in addition to other inhalant and insect allergens. Forty-eight of the dogs had +2 or greater intradermal reactions to 1 or more food extracts at concentration of 1,000 protein nitrogen units/ml. Thirty of the food extract-positive dogs were fed a restrictive hypoallergenic diet. Of these 30 dogs, 3 improved, then allergy signs worsened when they were challenge-exposed with the original diet. Fifty-two dogs did not have skin test reactivity to any of the 9 food extracts. Of these 52 dogs, 35 were fed a restrictive diet.

Chironomus larvae seem to be the principal sensitizer in fish food allergy. In addition, a variety of other Arthropoda species that are used as fish food can induce immediate hypersensitivity. Attention is drawn to this polyvalent sensitization by presenting the case history of a 27-year-old patient who kept fish and who suffered from allergic asthma bronchiale. He showed strongly positive reactions in skin tests for Chironomus and Culex larvae, as well as several kinds of Crustacea species, such as Daphnia and brine shrimps.

A 23-year-old female presented with classical features of immediate hypersensitivity reaction after contact with paw-paw (Cerica papaya). She had a total serum IgE of 2500 i.u./ml. Prick tests with paw-paw extracts were positive. Her serum gave a positive P-K test on her siblings.

Chronic Brucellosis is an infection disease, which is still of great clinical interest whether due to the difficulties of diagnosis involved or to the peculiar course of the illness. For this reasons, we have considered several cases of Chronic Brucellosis observed over a period of 10 years, which have presented particular problems of diagnosis. Furthermore, we have underlined the importance in the diagnosis, of intradermal reaction and the hemoreaction to the anamelitina injection. We propose therefore, to consider their diagnostic specificity by analyzing the results obtained.

The bifurcated needle technique for BCG vaccination was compared with intradermal injection in a mass BCG and smallpox vaccination programme in Afghanistan. In all population groups the bifurcated needle technique produced substantial tuberculin sensitivity, which however was significantly inferior to that following intradermal injection. The advantages of the bifurcated needle technique did not result in a significant increase in vaccination coverage and output. Under the present circumstances vaccination by bifurcated needle would probably be more expensive than intradermal vaccination.

Macroscopic, light and electron microscopic alterations in ligated rabbit intestinal loops challenged with five standard enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and twenty-three enteropathogenic E. coli (EEC-I) strains, freshly isolated from infantile enteritis cases, were investigated. Actinomycotic infections are characterized by long-term inflammatory lesions containing large numbers of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and mononuclear cells. The pathogenic mechanisms involved in these lesions are not understood.
