The objective of this study was to evaluate the benefit of screening for anemia in infants in relation to their previous diet. The iron status of 854 nine-month-old infants on three different feeding regimens and on a regimen including iron dextran injection was determined by analysis of hemoglobin, serum ferritin, and erythrocyte protoporphyrin levels and of serum transferrin saturation. Infants were categorized as having iron deficiency if two or three of the three biochemical test results were abnormal and as having iron deficiency anemia if, in addition, the hemoglobin level was less than …

The aim was to estimate the efficacy of multimodality therapy of iron deficiency anemia with vitamins combined with iron salts and to compare the results of this therapy with that including iron salts only. Besides the results of therapy using iron preparations administered per os and in injections were compared. Altogether 250 women were entered in this study. Chronic posthemorrhagic iron deficiency anemia was diagnosed in 175 patients, in 75 iron deficiency anemia developed against a background of pregnancy 250 women were divided into 10 groups. The last 3 groups included pregnant women. The…

Iron is an indispensable element for the normal physiological function of the brain. In terms of neuronal metabolism, iron is involved in multiple critical biological processes such as oxygen transport, energy metabolism, DNA synthesis, neurotransmitter synthesis and myelin formation. Maintaining brain iron homeostasis is crucial for neurodevelopment and function. Iron dyshomeostasis has been associated with the onset and progression of various neuropsychiatric disorders, including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, depression, schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, an…

A long-standing clinical conundrum is the pronounced phenotypic heterogeneity of hereditary hemochromatosis. Patients with identical HFE genotypes and similar degrees of iron overload can have vastly different clinical outcomes, ranging from being completely asymptomatic to developing severe cirrhosis, diabetes, or cardiomyopathy. This variability strongly implies the existence of genetic or environmental modifiers that dictate disease penetrance. Here, copper may be a compelling disease-modifying candidate, due to its intimately intertwined metabolism with iron. Indeed, profound iron loading …

Iron is a crucial element for living organism in terms of oxygen transport, hematopoiesis, enzymatic activity, mitochondrial respiratory chain function and also immune system function. The human being has evolved a mechanism to regulate body iron. In some rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematous (SLE), systemic sclerosis (SSc), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and gout, this balanced iron regulation is impaired. Altered iron homeostasis can contribute to disease progression through ROS production, fibrosis, inflammation, abnormal bone homeostasis, NETosis a…

Pre-anemic iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia are the most common health conditions. They are mostly caused by blood loss and/or inadequate dietary iron absorption and are managed with iron replacement therapy. The goal of iron replacement therapy is to correct anemia and replenish iron stores. In most patients, oral iron is typically the first choice for treatment due to its ease of use, over-the-counter availability, and low cost of most common formulations. Ferrous sulfate remains the gold standard for oral iron therapy, but alternative formulations have also been developed. Effecti…

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a complex cardiovascular condition that is characterized by elevated pulmonary arterial pressure, which leads to significant morbidity and mortality. Among the various factors that influence the pathophysiology and progression of PH, iron deficiency has become a critical, yet often overlooked, element. In this review, the prevalence, implications, and therapeutic potential of addressing iron deficiency in patients with PH are elucidated.Iron deficiency, which is prevalent in a significant proportion of patients with PH, has been associated with worsened clinical …

Iron metabolism plays a crucial role in various physiological functions of the human body, as it is essential for the growth and development of almost all organisms. Dysregulated iron metabolism-manifested either as iron deficiency or overload-is a significant risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Moreover, emerging evidence suggests that ferroptosis, a form of iron-dependent programed cell death, may also contribute to CVD development. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms of iron metabolism and ferroptosis in CVD is important for improving disease management. By …

Heart, dentate nucleus, and dorsal root ganglia (DRG) are targets of tissue damage in Friedreich ataxia (FA). This report summarizes the histology and histopathology of iron in the main tissues affected by FA. None of the affected anatomical sites reveals an elevation of total iron levels. In the myocardium, a small percentage of fibers shows iron-reactive granular inclusions. The accumulation of larger iron aggregates and fiber invasion cause necrosis and damage to the contractile apparatus. In the dentate nucleus, the principal FA-caused tissue injury is neuronal atrophy and grumose reaction…

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is worldwide the most frequently occurring deficiency of a trace element. Meanwhile, the indications are increasing that iron deficiency plays a relevant role in many cardiovascular diseases and that treatment is accessible with intravenous administration of iron.
OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The aim of this article is to elucidate the clinical comorbidities, diagnostic dilemmas and treatment possibilities of iron deficiency in cardiovascular diseases. The study situation on iron deficiency and iron substitution in heart failure, aortic valve stenosis, atrial fibrillatio…

Iron, as one of the essential trace elements in the human body, is involved in a wide range of critical biochemical reactions and physiological processes, including the maintenance of the normal cell cycle, mitochondrial function, nucleotide metabolism, and immune response. In this context, iron is naturally associated with cancer occurrence. Cellular iron deficiency can induce apoptosis, however, iron can also engage in potentially harmful reactions that produce free radicals because of its capacity to gain and lose electrons. Studies suggest that dietary iron, particularly heme iron, may be …

Parahydrogen induced polarization (PHIP) can address the low sensitivity problem intrinsic to nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Using a catalyst capable of reacting with parahydrogen and substrate in either a hydrogenative or nonhydrogenative manner can result in signal enhancement of the substrate. This work describes the development of a rare example of an iron catalyst capable of reacting with parahydrogen to hyperpolarize olefins. Complexes of the form (MesCCC)Fe(H)(L)(N2) (L = Py (Py = pyridine), PMe3, PPh3) were synthesized from the reaction of the parent complexes (MesCCC)FeMes(L…

Iron deficiency (ID) is common in patients with cardiovascular disease. Up to 60% of patients with coronary artery disease, and an even higher proportion of those with heart failure (HF) or pulmonary hypertension have ID; the evidence for cerebrovascular disease, aortic stenosis and atrial fibrillation is less robust. The prevalence of ID increases with the severity of cardiac and renal dysfunction and is probably more common amongst women. Insufficient dietary iron, reduced iron absorption due to increases in hepcidin secondary to the low-grade inflammation associated with atherosclerosis and…

Anaemia affects a third of surgical patients and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anaemia and can be absolute or functional. Patients may require treatment with oral or intravenous iron.
