Neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE) is an autoimmune disease associated with maternal anti-SS-A/Ro and anti-SS-B/La antibodies. NLE is characterized by cutaneous erythema, congenital heart block (CHB), hepatic dysfunction and hematological abnormalities. CHB is irreversible, usually requiring a pacemaker, but other symptoms are reversible and most disappear within 6 months in parallel with declining antibody levels. We encountered a 14-year-old Bangladeshi boy who developed acute hepatitis E in Japan. He showed improvement without the development of fulminant hepatitis. His hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype was I, which causes epidemics mainly in South Asia. He developed this disease more than 6 months after coming to Japan. Considering the latent period, it was suspected that he had been infected with HEV in Japan, although the HEV virus is presumed not to be indigenous to Japan.

PURPOSE: To estimate the incidence rate of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery performed by Japanese surgeons.
METHODS: A sample of 20% of members of the Japanese Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons was randomly selected. Each member was sent a postal survey asking for information on the number of cataract surgeries performed in 2003 and the number of postsurgery cases of endophthalmitis.

The current surveillance system by the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) Surveillance Committee, Japan, started in April 1999, and 836 patients with prion diseases had been registered until September 2006, including sporadic CJD (78 %), inherited prion disease (14 %), and infectious prion disease (8 %). The infectious prion disease included a patient with variant CJD and 68 patients with dura mater graft-associated CJD (dCJD). Combined with the dCJD patients identified by previous surveillance systems, the total number of dCJD was counted to be 124.

We investigated the prevalence of dystonia in Akita Prefecture (population was 1,166,967 as of 1 November 2004). The prevalence of primary generalized and focal dystonia is estimated to be 0.68 and 14.4 per 100,000 persons, respectively. Blepharospasm is the most common primary dystonia in this area.
