BACKGROUND: Patients with corneal shape abnormalities should be identified prior to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). We used videokeratography screening to detect subclinical corneal abnormalities, including keratoconus, which might have been missed by conventional clinical evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Five eyes with keratoconus that were scheduled for penetrating keratoplasty were treated instead with excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy to reduce the steepness of the cone. The follow up after 6 to 12 months is reported here.

Thirty-five patients have had 39 consecutive epikeratoplasty procedures (12 adult aphakic, 9 pediatric aphakic, 12 myopic, and 6 keratoconic eyes) by the same surgeon, using commercially prepared lenticules.
