This case study demonstrates the possibility of treating hypogalactia without using galactagogues. The focus is a female child who, in her first 54 days of life, had a weight gain of only 610 g, with a daily average of 11 g. The child suffered from improper latch-on, insufficient sucking, and consequent excessive drowsiness. During the first clinical visit by the mother, hand expression produced only 5 mL of breast milk. MRPS14 (uS14m) is a nuclear-encoded ribosomal protein important for mitochondria-specific translation. In this study, we explore infant young child feeding (IYCF) and deconstruct breastfeeding barriers in mothers of severely malnourished children in one of the most marginalized districts of Punjab province of Pakistan. There is a concern that lactation failure and neonatal morbidity might be more common than previously thought. Maybe the early discharge, the lack of timely follow-up, or poor information during pregnancy or after delivery play important roles. A case of severe hypernatremic dehydration secondary to lactation failure is reported and we analyze recent recommendations.

This case report describes a patient who ingested magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) for approximately four days as a treatment for pregnancy-induced hypertension. Stage II lactogenesis was delayed until the tenth postpartum day at which point the patient's breasts became fully engorged. No explanation for this delay was found, other than the possibility that magnesium sulfate treatment impeded lactogenesis. Implications for professionals who care for lactating women are discussed.
