Serological evidence of toxocariasis in patients from Spain with a clinical suspicion of visceral larva migrans.

Sera from patients with clinical characteristics of toxocariasis were assayed using the ELISA method and larval excretory-secretory antigen. Four hundred and seven samples of Toxocara serology were received at the laboratory of Ciudad Sanitaria Juan Canalejo Hospital of Corunna, Spain, from 1984 to 1989. Of these, 30 were from adults, 332 from children and 45 from patients of unknown age, resulting in Toxocara seroprevalences of 23.3%, 32.8% and 17.7% respectively. The reasons for these serological differences in the rural and urban areas of Galicia, Spain are discussed.

[Larva migrans visceralis--occurrence of Toxocara canis in dogs in the East German district of Cottbus].

Larvae of the nematode genus Toxocara are the main causative agents of the L.m.v. syndrom. 5,002 dogs from the Cottbus district aged between 2 and 36 months were examined. 994 animals (19.9%) were found to be infected with Toxocara canis. Dogs from a rural area have a higher infection rate (25.6%) than dogs from an urban area (15.2%). The relatively high infection rate of dogs, high egg-production and the tenacity of the development stages are factors dangerous to human health.

Visceral larva migrans. A review and reassessment indicating two forms of clinical expression: visceral and ocular.

Visceral larva migrans is a disease in which the larvae of animal parasites invade human tissues but do not complete their life cycles. The most frequent cause of this illness in children is the dog roundworm, Toxocara canis. A review of the literature, as well as our clinical experience, indicates that there are two forms of clinical expression: one, visceral, and the other, ocular. In general the clinical and laboratory abnormalities (hepatomegaly, recurrent pneumonia, eosinophilia, and hyperglobulinemia) usually associated with visceral disease are absent in children with ocular abnormaliti…

Breeding places and seasonal incidence of Aedes aegypti, as assessed by the single-larva survey method.

The single-larva survey method was employed to study the breeding places and seasonal incidence of Aedes aegypti in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. From May 1968 to May 1969, 28 462 containers of water-located in approximately equal numbers indoors and outdoors-were investigated. The highest frequency of breeding (8.0%) of A. aegypti was observed in tires and motor parts. Drums, barrels, water-pots, and other receptacles left outdoors showed a higher frequency (3.1%) than those kept indoors (0.6%). Metal containers were infested to a greater extent than those made of mud, wood, or other materials; 2.…

Brain Transcriptomic Reprogramming and Comb-Associated Microbiome Variation During the Larva-To-Pupa Transition in Apis Mellifera.

The larva-to-pupa transition in honey bees (Apis mellifera) involves extensive neural remodeling, yet the molecular dynamics of brain development and their relationship with the surrounding microbial environment remain poorly characterized. This study integrated brain transcriptomic profiling with comb-associated metagenomic analysis to characterize stage-specific molecular signatures during metamorphosis. RNA sequencing of larval and pupal brains was combined with honeycomb shotgun metagenomics from the same sample. Brain transcriptomes exhibited marked stage-specific divergence. Pupae displa…

The rediscovery of Epigomphus sulcatistyla Donnelly, 1989, with a description of its larva and female (Odonata: Gomphidae).

The larva of Epigomphus sulcatistyla Donnelly, 1989 is described, figured and compared with other described Mexican larvae. It is characterized by 3rd antennomere spindle-shaped, almost twice longer than its widest part; ligula with a ventral row of eight short, truncate teeth on middle; abdomen lateral spines on S7-9 slightly divergent; male epiproct dorsal tubercles rounded apically and divergent distally. It differs from other Mexican species mainly in shape of 3rd antennomere, number of teeth on ligula, serrations on lateral margins of S8-9, and shape of cerci. Also, the hitherto unknown f…

Description of the final stadium larva of Cryptophaea vietnamensis (van Tol & Rozendaal, 1995) (Odonata: Euphaeidae) from Vietnam.

The final stadium larva of the Cryptophaea vietnamensis (van Tol & Rozendaal, 1995) from Vietnam is described and illustrated based on specimens reared to adulthood. This is the first record of a larva of the genus Cryptophaea Hämäläinen, 2003. The larvae of C. vietnamensis are seldom encountered, but where present they may co-occur with larvae of the genera Anisopleura Selys, 1853, Bayadera Selys, 1853, and Euphaea Selys, 1840. The larvae of Cryptophaea are very similar to those of Bayadera but can be separated from known larvae of that genus by the distal margin of the ligula being a pronoun…

Alterations of plasma circulating microRNAs in BALB/c mice with Toxocara canis visceral and cerebral larva migrans.

BACKGROUND: Human toxocariasis is a neglected parasitic disease characterised by the syndromes visceral, cerebral, and ocular larva migrans. This disease is caused by the migrating larvae of Toxocara roundworms from dogs and cats, affecting 1.4 billion people globally. Via extracellular vesicles (EVs), microRNAs have been demonstrated to play roles in host-parasite interactions and proposed as circulating biomarkers for the diagnosis and follow-up of parasitic diseases. METHODS: Small RNA-seq was conducted to identify miRNAs in the infective larvae of T. canis and plasma EV-containing prepara…

Cutaneous larva migrans, a neglected tropical disease of skin, with severe secondary eczematization at an unusual location.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM), commonly referred to as creeping eruption, is an infectious condition caused by various types of hookworms. It primarily affects the superficial layers of the skin owing to the absence of hyaluronidases and proteases. Typically, the distal lower extremities are the most commonly affected areas. The presence of distinctive lesions characterized by erythematous, winding, or serpentine tracks, slightly elevated from the skin surface, is indicative of the condition. Diagnosis primarily relies on clinical observation. Dermoscopy reveals multiple segmented yellowish-li…

Consideration of Diagnostic Methods for Cutaneous Larva Migrans in the Sole of an 8-Year-Old Boy.

An 8-year-old boy developed serpiginous erythema on the soles of his feet and was diagnosed with cutaneous larva migrans (CLM). Following treatment with ivermectin, the erythema improved within 7 days, but it recurred 14 days later, requiring a second dose for complete resolution. Ultrasound and MRI did not reveal any parasites, but fluctuations in eosinophils, IgE and IgA levels were observed during treatment. This case highlights the importance of combining multiple diagnostic methods to evaluate treatment effectiveness.

Sudden emergence and spread of cutaneous larva migrans in Sudan: A case series calls for urgent actions.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a self-limiting dermatosis parasitic disease that is caused by zoonotic hookworm mainly infects cats, dogs, and accidentally humans. The disease affects hosts through the invasion and the migration of the hookworm larva into top layers of the skin. The disease occurs in tropical and subtropical regions; where people commonly are infected when sitting or barefoot walking on places contaminated with feces of infected cats or dogs. Due to self-limiting nature of the disease, the exact burden and prevalence are commonly underestimated. In this communication, we inv…

Peptides inhibiting angiotensin-I-converting enzyme: Isolation from flavourzyme hydrolysate of Protaetia brevitarsis larva protein and identification.

Many angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory peptides are used to prevent and manage hypertension. In this study, ACE inhibitory peptides were isolated from an insect protein that is attracting attention for it potential antihypertensive activity. Protaetia brevitarsis larva protein was enzymatically hydrolyzed by Flavourzyme®, and the hydrolysate was shown to inhibit ACE. Subsequent fractionation, using ultrafiltration and gel permeation chromatography followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis, identified four previously unknown peptides with significant ACE…

First report of furuncular myiasis caused by the larva of botfly, Dermatobia hominis, in a Taiwanese traveler.

A case of furuncular myiasis was reported for the first time in a 29-year-old young Taiwanese traveler returning from an ecotourism in Peru. Furuncle-like lesions were observed on the top of his head and he complained of crawling sensations within his scalp. The invasive larva of botfly, Dermatobia hominis, was extruded from the furuncular lesion of the patient. Awareness of cutaneous myiasis for clinicians should be considered for a patient who has a furuncular lesion and has recently returned from a botfly-endemic area.
