A myopic patient with self-reported photorefractive keratectomy 9 years ago requested small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) as retreatment. The presence of interface bubbles while creating a corneal cap of the right eye revealed that the previous refractive surgery was laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Therefore, the SMILE procedure was resumed in the right eye, but flap-lift LASIK was performed in the left eye. Postoperative follow-up showed that the vision in both eyes reached the preoperative best corrected level. SMILE may be a potential option for refractive regression after LAS

Purpose: Regression of the refractive outcome is a major concern of LASIK procedures mainly in presbyopic patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term efficacy of the pharmacological treatment of presbyopia performed with Benozzi's method, in combination with hyperopic LASIK surgery in presbyopic population. Methods: A nonrandomized case series was developed, including presbyopic patients who underwent bilateral "Hyperopic LASIK surgery" and were pharmacologically treated with Benozzi's Method from January 2011 to August 2018, with at least 2 years of follow-up, at two pri

Refractive lenticule extraction is a corneal surgical technique that uses a femtosecond laser exclusively to create an intrastromal refractive lenticule for the correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism. In small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) the generated refractive lenticule is subsequently extracted through a small incision. The reported efficacy, predictability and safety of the flap-less SMILE procedure is similar to those of femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Advantages of SMILE over LASIK include less iatrogenic dry eye, fewer induced higher-order aberrations, a

Corneal refractive surgeries are one of the commonly performed procedures for correction of refractive errors. Tear film abnormality is the most common postoperative complication of corneal refractive surgeries. Consequently, these procedures represent a clinically significant cause of dry eye disease. The mechanisms which lead to dry eye disease include corneal sensory nerve dysfunction, ocular surface desiccation, glandular apoptosis and ocular surface inflammation. Although transient tear film abnormalities occur in almost all patients following surgery, patients with pre-existing dry eye s

Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) was introduced in the recent decade for the treatment of myopia and myopic astigmatism. This flap-free technique has a high efficacy and safety profile and also carries potential advantages over laser in situ keratomileusis such as a better corneal biomechanical stability, reduction in dry eyes rate, and the avoidance of flap complications. However, there have been concerns regarding the precision of astigmatism correction that undercorrection has been reported to be apparent. Various factors that affect astigmatism correction have been identified in

Myopia is a generally benign refractive error with an increasing prevalence worldwide. It can be corrected temporarily with glasses and contact lenses and permanently with laser vision correction. The 2 main procedures currently being performed for myopia correction are photorefractive keratectomy and laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. Each technique has its advantages, but they appear to yield similar visual outcomes 1 year after surgery. Laser vision correction for myopia was considered a paradigm shift because healthy eyes could now undergo a surgical procedure to permanently and safely

Some emission spectra of diatomic molecules were calculated by a semi-automatic programme package in order to infer the rotational and vibrational temperatures in Boltzmann distribution by comparing them with the corresponding experimental ones. The calculation procedure was applied in the case of CN radical and C2 molecule whose optical emission spectra were recorded during pulsed excimer laser ablation of a graphite target in low-pressure nitrogen environment. Computed similar or dissimilar values of rotational and vibrational temperatures let to verify the existence or not of local thermody

PURPOSE: To report severe scarring in a corneal graft after excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy.
METHODS: A 35-year-old man underwent photorefractive keratectomy twice for severe compound myopic astigmatism and anisometropia after penetrating keratoplasty.
RESULTS: Corneal opacity corresponded to areas of irregular epithelial thickness, focal absence of the basement membrane, loss of Bowman's layer, and stromal scarring in the ablation zone.
CONCLUSION: There may be an increased risk of severe corneal stromal scarring from photorefractive keratectomy in eyes that have had previous pen

PURPOSE: To explore the use of autologous astigmatic lenticule reshaping and rotation surgery to correct high astigmatism in conjunction with excimer laser technology to correct residual refractive error.
METHODS: Six patients with high astigmatism (8 eyes, all with astigmatism from -5.50 to -11.00 diopters [D]) seeking refractive error correction were enrolled. The following methods were used to correct refractive errors that could not be corrected by a single conventional surgery: (1) cutting of a customized lens using FLEx technology, (2) lifting of the corneal flap and reshaping the autol

Fifty male albino rabbits were studied. Ten animals served as controls. Forty animals were prepared to receive photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), including anesthesia, scraping of the corneal epithelial cells, etc. Twenty of these animals then received PRK with energy delivered by excimer laser (pulse rate = 20 Hz, fluence 250 mJ/cm2; number of pulses = 6032; cumulative UV dose = 1508J/cm2). The other 20 animals were exposed to the same operating microscope light as the PRK-treated animals, but they did not receive PRK. All three groups were divided into halves: the first half was immediately

BACKGROUND: Postoperative astigmatism following penetrating keratoplasty is a major problem after corneal transplantation. The main goal of new trephination techniques such as femtosecond laser or excimer-laser trephination is to improve refractive and visual outcomes. The femtosecond laser technique makes profiled corneal trephinations such as the top hat or mushroom profile possible. We present the postoperative outcome of femtosecond laser-assisted penetrating keratoplasties.
METHODS: We performed 123 femtosecond laser-assisted penetrating keratoplasties in 119 patients. The main outcome m

PURPOSE: Efficacy, predictability, stability, and safety of multifocal ablation with a peripheral near zone for correction of myopia, hyperopia, and presbyopia was assessed.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 83 hyperopic eyes and 77 myopic eyes. Baseline mean spherical equivalent refraction in the hyperopia group was +1.54 +/- 0.90 D (range 0 to +4.00 D) and in the myopia group, -4.31 +/- 2.62 D (range -12.00 to -0.25 D). Mean near addition was 2.40 D in the hyperopia group and 1.75 D in the myopia group. All eyes had multifocal laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) with a periphe

Worldwide, femtosecond Laser Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is a well known and commonly used refractive technique, although Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) has become increasingly popular since it was introduced in 2011. In LASIK, a corneal flap is cut with a microkeratome or femtosecond laser, followed by thinning of the stromal bed with excimer laser ablation. In SMILE, a minor intrastromal lenticule is cut with a femtosecond laser and subsequently removed through a small incision, leaving the anterior and strongest part of the cornea almost intact. Both LASIK and SMILE
