Injuries in cross-country skiing. Trail markers for diagnosis and treatment.

Cross-country skiers can suffer acute injuries, such as sprains of the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb, the medial collateral ligament of the knee, and the ankle. They are also subject to overuse injuries, including arthritic changes in the great toe, and are at risk for cold-related injuries. Most of these injuries can be treated conservatively, and some can be avoided with adequate preparation and training.

[Pathophysiology of open fractures and principles of their treatment. Review].

Authors have worked out in detail the problems of fractures associated with the injury of soft tissues. They use their own classification dividing these fractures into two major groups, and namely open and closed fractures. In each group they distinguish 4 degrees of severity of the injury of soft tissues. Of decisive importance for both the final result and the course of the treatment is the method of treatment which starts already on the scene of the injury. The whole therapeutical management up to the actual operation has several successive phases. The way of osteosynthesis can be decided u

Digital subtraction angiography in extremity trauma.

Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) may have considerable impact on the work-up of patients who have suffered blunt or penetrating trauma. The angiographic evaluation of vascular injuries (e.g., arteriovenous fistulae, pseudoaneurysms, hemorrhage) can be accomplished rapidly and with minimal catheter use and manipulation, which is particularly important for those critically ill patients who have significant immobility because of multiple fractures. We retrospectively reviewed the digital subtraction angiograms in 50 consecutive cases of extremity trauma. The quality of the images in 44 of th

Sickness absence and disability pension among injured working-aged pedestrians - a population-based Swedish register study.

BACKGROUND: The knowledge is scarce about sickness absence (SA) and disability pension (DP) among pedestrians injured in a traffic-related accident, including falls. Thus, the aim was to explore the frequencies of types of accidents and injuries and their association with SA and DP among working-aged individuals. METHODS: A nationwide register-based study, including all individuals aged 16-64 and living in Sweden, who in 2010 had in- or specialized outpatient healthcare after a new traffic-related accident as a pedestrian. Information on age, sex, sociodemographics, SA, DP, type of accident,

The Community Orthopaedic Surgeon Taking Trauma Call: Pediatric Tibia Fracture Pearls and Pitfalls.

Tibial fractures in children present a wide array of challenges to the managing orthopaedic surgeon. Injuries cover a spectrum from subtle tibial spine fractures to comminuted high-energy shaft fractures requiring free flap coverage. Significant risks range from malunion and leg length discrepancy to infected nonunions and Volkmann ischemic contracture. This article offers evidence and experience-based advice that is aimed at helping the community orthopaedic surgeon taking call.

[Percutaneous transluminal recanalization in a patient with arterial occlusive disease and multiple injuries (author's transl)].

A case of a 66 year old patient with multiple injuries is reported. A combination of conventional trauma treatment and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTR) of a segmented superficial femoral artery occlusion prevented leg amputation. When the patient died 8 weeks later from trauma sequelae the successful recanalization was demonstrated in histopathology investigation. It is concluded that PTR is an ideal accessory to the present therapeutic spectrum in vascular surgery.

Previous hamstring muscle strain injury alters passive tissue stiffness and vibration sense.

BACKGROUND: Hamstring strain is one of the most common among sports injuries. A previous history of this injury is considered a strong predictor of recurrent hamstring strain injury. It has been suggested that fascial tissue alters after muscle strain injury. However, the association between previous hamstring strain injury and tissue stiffness and vibration sense detection has not been investigated. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine whether a previous history of hamstring strain injury affects tissue stiffness and vibration sense in professional soccer players. METHOD: The stiffness (Myoton

Decreased Thigh Muscle Cross-Sectional Area Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Depends on Concomitant Meniscal Injury and Subject Sex.

This study characterized acute changes in thigh muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) in subjects who suffered their first severe knee trauma. Ninety-one males and females who suffered ACL rupture with or without concomitant meniscus injury underwent bilateral mid-thigh axial T1-weighted, fast field echo magnetic resonance imaging early after the index trauma and prior to reconstruction. The extensor and flexor muscle groups were segmented bilaterally, and CSA measured. Within-person injured-to-contralateral normal side differences in CSA (injured minus normal limb) were evaluated. ACL-injured mal

Athletes with unilateral patellar tendinopathy have increased subsequent lower extremity musculoskeletal injury risk.

This study aimed to investigate static and dynamic postural balance inter-limb asymmetries in athletes with unilateral patellar tendinopathy (UPT) and estimate subsequent lower extremity musculoskeletal injury risk compared to controls. Twenty-eight athletes with UPT were recruited. Twenty-eight healthy athletes served as controls. Static postural balance inter-limb asymmetry (symmetry index: SI) was assessed based on differences in the mean centre of pressure (CoP) velocity (CoPv) values between the affected leg (AL) and non-affected leg (NAL) for the UPT group, and the dominant leg (DL) and

Time of Season and Game Segment Is Not Related to Likelihood of Lower-Limb Injuries: A Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Fatigue due to game play is often cited as a factor in musculoskeletal injuries; however, it is unclear whether or not this view is supported by published research findings. Given the importance researchers and practitioners place on the potential effects of game play with respect to injury, it is important to understand what inferences can be drawn from the collective research in this realm. This meta-analysis will consider the time of season and segment of the game, as it relates anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), groin, and hamstring injury occurrence. DATA SOURCES: Database sear

Partial Tibial Nonunion due to Entrapment of Anterior Tibial Artery: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Arterial injury/entrapment is an uncommon sequelae of long bone fractures, particularly in closed injuries. The proximity of the anterior tibial artery to the distal tibia poses a risk of entrapment with a fracture at this level. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of a partial nonunion due to entrapment of the anterior tibial artery in a healed tibia fracture in a pediatric patient. CASE REPORT: We describe a case of a 16-year-old male who presented with leg pain 2 years after a left distal third oblique tibia fracture. The fracture was initially treated

Knee function among elite handball and football players 1-6 years after anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The aim of the study was to describe objective and self-reported knee function for athletes who have returned to elite handball and football play after an ACL injury, comparing these to non-injured players at the same level. A total of 414 handball and 444 football players completed baseline tests from 2007 through 2014, examining lower extremity strength, dynamic balance, knee laxity, and knee function (KOOS questionnaire). Measures were compared between injured and non-injured legs and between injured legs and legs of controls. Eighty (9.3%) of the 858 players reported a previous ACL injury,
