AIM: To establish a rabbit model of chronic ocular hypertension (OHT) by limbal buckling.
METHODS: Eighteen New Zealand White rabbits were involved and divided into three groups. A latex encircling band of 20, 25 or 35 mm was implanted behind the limbus in the right eye of each animal. The intraocular pressure (IOP) was monitored for 8 weeks, after which optic nerve damage was evaluated by fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT) retrograde labelling and histology. Meanwhile, the anterior chamber angle (ACA) was examined by OCT and gonioscopy.
RESULTS: OHT was induced in all an

OBJECTIVE: To introduce an improved surgical method to correct conjunctivochalasis.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
PARTICIPANTS: We studied 28 eyes in 28 patients.
METHODS: First, conjunctival semiperitomy based on the corneal limbus was performed. Next, the subconjunctival tissues received 2 lines (12 to 18 spots) of gentle cauterization using a cautery to adhere the conjunctiva to underlying sclera. The grade of conjunctivochalasis, Schirmer test (St), and tear breakup time (BUT) were recorded under a slit-lamp, and the severity of patients' symptoms were assessed by using the Ocular Surfac

PURPOSE: Ocular injuries following exposure to the chemical agent sulfur mustard (SM) are characterized by acute corneal erosions and inflammation of the anterior segment that may be followed by delayed Partial Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency (LSCD), expressed clinically by corneal neovascularization and epithelial defects. LSCD may derive from direct destruction of limbal stem cells or indirectly from altered limbal stromal niche. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism underlying LSCD in SM injuries, focusing on the effects of the chemical on limbal epithelium.

Patients with limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) suffer from photophobia and a severe loss of vision uncorrectable by conventional PKP. This literature review shows that new strategies can be formulated for treating LSCD. Early cryopreserved amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) as a temporary biological bandage with sutures or with sutureless ProKera in the acute stage of chemical burn and Stevens-Johnson syndrome prevents the occurrence of LSCD by preserving and expanding the remaining limbal epithelial stem cells. Similarly, remaining limbal stem cells can also be expanded in corneal surf

PURPOSE: To assess the usefulness of limbal-conjunctival autograft transplantation (LCAT) for the treatment of recurrent pterygium.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventeen eyes with advanced recurrent pterygium underwent LCAT All had already been treated at least twice either by simple excision (n=15) or by conjunctival rotation autograft (n=2). Three eyes (17.65%) had symblepharon at the time of surgery, so LCAT was combined with amniotic membrane transplantation. The autograft was taken from the supero-lateral part of the same eye and transferred to the area where the pterygium had been excised.

PURPOSE: To determine the pathophysiological etiology of superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis (SLK), we compared the superior limbic conjunctivae of SLK patients and normal controls.
METHODS: Frozen sections of conjunctival specimens from five SLK patients and two controls were examined by immunohistochemical methods. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta2, integrin beta1, and tenascin (TN) were chosen for analysis because their expression is known to be affected by mechanical stress or injury. The staining pattern was observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy.
RESULTS: Prominent positi

We have devised a new type of pterygium surgery, based on the principle of biological contact inhibition, involving the use of a 0.5-millimeter-wide pedicle autoconjunctival strip placed at the corneal limbus. Over a period of 2 years, the procedure has been performed in 56 eyes of 52 patients, 39 to 74 years old (mean, 57 +/- 9 years), with primary pterygium. After an average follow up of 34 +/- 6 months (range, 20 to 40 months), the pterygium recurred in six (10.7%) of the 56 eyes. There were no other significant postoperative complications. Although our method has the disadvantages of being

BACKGROUND: Limbal cell transplantation may improve the visual outcome after chemical trauma and ocular surface diseases.
METHODS: Nine eyes of nine consecutive patients (eight males and one female, age 9-60 years), underwent limbal autograft transplantation (LAUT). In five cases LAUT was done for severe chemical burns in the acute stage (group 1). In four patients with old chemical trauma LAUT was performed years after the trauma (group 2). Penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) was carried out within 6 months after LAUT in three patients of group 2. Preoperatively, the visual acuity in all the pati

Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency (LSCD), caused due to corneal injury, primarily by chemical/alkali burns, leads to compromised vision. Recently, several animal models of corneal alkali burn injury have become available. The majority of the studies with these animal models start interventions soon after the injury. However, in the clinical setting, there is a considerable delay before the intervention is initiated. Detailed knowledge of the molecular, histopathological, and clinical parameters associated with the progression of the injury leading to LSCD is highly desirable. In this context, we set

BACKGROUND: Limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) leads to growth of abnormal fibro-vascular pannus tissue onto the corneal surface as well as chronic inflammation and impaired vision. Our aim was to investigate the clinical outcome of ocular surface reconstruction in LSCD using limbal epithelial cells expanded on amniotic membrane (AM).
METHODS: Forty-four eyes of 38 patients (27 male, 11 female) with total (n = 32) or partial (n = 12) LSCD were treated by transplantation of autologous (n = 30) or allogeneic (n = 14) limbal epithelial cells expanded on intact AM. LSCD was caused by chemical and

A 65-year-old man had uneventful cataract surgery in the right eye with a toric diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) placed fully within the capsule bag. On postoperative day 1 and week 1, the IOL was well positioned and his eye was healing normally. The plan was to proceed with cataract surgery in the left eye in the near future. One month postoperatively, he presented with blurred vision, glare, and halos and was noted to have iris prolapse out of the temporal clear corneal main incision. Of interest, the patient reported some itching and eye rubbing in the early postoperative period. He was t

The corneal epithelium, a stratified squamous non-keratinized layer of 50-60 μm thickness, forms the outermost barrier of the cornea and provides both optical clarity and protection against trauma, infection, and fluid imbalance. It plays a vital role in protecting the eye and maintaining visual clarity. A range of conditions, including trauma, metabolic disorders, microbial infection, and limbal stem cell deficiency, can lead to chronic corneal epithelial defects and subsequent visual impairment. Epithelial renewal is a continuous process, primarily sustained by stem cells located at the limb

Limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) is traditionally regarded as a rare ocular surface disorder characterised by impaired corneal epithelial regeneration. Emerging evidence suggests that pterygium, a common fibrovascular lesion extending onto the cornea, may involve focal limbal epithelial or niche dysfunction. This narrative review examines clinical, histopathological and biological evidence relevant to the relationship between pterygium and focal limbal dysfunction. The peripheral light focusing hypothesis provides a biologically plausible explanation for the characteristic nasal predilection
