As an excellent biological resource, Chlorella has wide applications for production of biofuel, bioactive substances and water environment restoration. Therefore, it is very important to understand the photosynthetic physiology characteristics of Chlorella. Magnesium ions play an important role in the growth of microalgae, not only the central atom of chlorophyll, but also the cofactor of some key enzyme in the metabolic pathway. A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the effects of magnesium deficiency on several photosynthetic and physiological parameters and the triacylglyceride (TAG)…

*Unravelling mechanisms that control plant growth as a function of nutrient availability presents a major challenge in plant biology. This study reports the first transcriptome response to long-term (1 wk) magnesium (Mg) depletion and restoration in Arabidopsis thaliana. *Before the outbreak of visual symptoms, genes responding to Mg starvation and restoration were monitored in the roots and young mature leaves and compared with the Mg fully supplied as control. *After 1 wk Mg starvation in roots and leaves, 114 and 2991 genes were identified to be differentially regulated, respectively, which

The mechanism of the fact that cerium improves the photosynthesis of plants under magnesium deficiency is poorly understood. The main aim of the study was to determine the role of cerium in the amelioration of magnesium deficiency effects in CO(2) assimilation of spinach. Spinach plants were cultivated in Hoagland's solution. They were subjected to magnesium deficiency and to cerium chloride administered in the magnesium-present Hoagland's media and magnesium-deficient Hoagland's media. The results showed that the chlorophyll synthesis and oxygen evolution was destroyed, and the activities of …

The purpose of this study was to investigate magnesium nutritional status and its association with asthma in elementary school children (1277 boys and 1109 girls) participating in the Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan (NAHSIT children 2001-2002). Dietary magnesium intake was based on 24-hour dietary recalls. Serum magnesium was measured. Average magnesium intake was 247 mg and 228 mg for the boys and girls, respectively, which is equivalent to 135-123% of the relevant Taiwanese Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs). Mean serum magnesium concentration was 0.87 mmol/L and 0.86 mmol/L, respectivel

The relationship between osteoporosis and magnesium (Mg) deficiency is still controversial. Here we report a case of an 82-year-old woman with a giant adenomatous goiter and severe osteoporosis with multiple vertebral fractures, whose clinical course indicated that her osteoporosis was probably due to Mg deficiency. She visited our hospital for treatments of tetany. Laboratory data showed the existence of hypomagnesemia, hypocalcemia, hypokalemia, vitamin D deficiency, and slightly elevated intact PTH. Intravenous administration of Mg not only improved these electrolyte abnormalities but also

PMR1, the Ca2+/Mn2+ ATPase of the secretory pathway in Saccharomyces cerevisiae was the first member of the secretory pathway Ca2+ ATPases (SPCA) to be characterized. In the past few years, pmr1Delta yeast have received more attention due to the recognition that the human homologue of this protein, hSPCA1 is defective in chronic benign pemphigus or Hailey-Hailey disease (HHD). Recent publications have described pmr1Delta S. cerevisiae as a useful model organism for studying the molecular pathology of HHD. Some observations indicated that the high Ca2+ sensitive phenotype of PMR1 defective yeas

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have linked low dietary magnesium (Mg) to low bone mineral density and osteoporosis. Mg deficiency in animal models has demonstrated a reduction in bone mass and increase in skeletal fragility. One major mechanism appears to be an increase in osteoclast number and bone resorption. The final pathway of osteoclastogenesis involves three constituents of a cytokine system: receptor activator of nuclear factor kB ligand (RANKL); its receptor, receptor activator of nuclear factor kB (RANK); and its soluble decoy receptor, osteoprotegerin (OPG). The relative presen

The aim of the present study was to determine whether a severely Mg-deficient diet can modify blood pressure in rats and whether these alterations in blood pressure are associated with a change in in vivo cardiovascular reactivity, alteration in plasma lipids and modification of the production of hormones involved in blood pressure regulation. Weanling male Wistar rats were pair-fed for 40 weeks with control (960 mg Mg/kg) and Mg-deficient (80 mg Mg/kg) diets. At 2 weeks, blood pressure was lower in Mg-deficient rats, while heart rate was greater than in controls. Mg-deficiency-induced hypoten

Audiogenic seizures associated with loss of weight, prostration, piloerection, palpebral ptosis and motor deficiency were induced after sound stimulation of determined frequency and amplitude in magnesium-deficient DBA/2 mice. These symptoms were maintained when standard diet conditions (1700 ppm Mg2+) were restored. In contrast, mice were protected from audiogenic seizure in a dose related manner when Crassostrea gigas extract (JCOE) were added to the diet for 10 consecutive days. Although a rational explanation for this protective effect has not yet been determined, it is assumed that it mig

We studied the development of nutritional iron deficiency 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 days after the intake of a semisynthetic diet lacking iron (diet 0) and the possible interactions with calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in both control rats and rats after 40 days of iron deficiency. During this period, iron deficiency was found to produce stress in the rats, as evidenced by high levels of cortisol in the serum. High levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) were also found. There was a considerable increase in the absorption of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium, but the phosphorus and magnesium balance

We have found an increase of a 38-kDa plasma protein level from 10 to 30 days in rats on a magnesium-deficient diet (Mg; 0.001 per cent), using sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). This 38-kDa protein returned to the control level after feeding the rats a magnesium-sufficient diet (Mg; 0.07 per cent) for 1 week. Purification of the protein by reverse-phase HPLC separated it into two components (p38k-1 and p38k-2). Amino acid analysis showed that these components were both haptoglobin (Hp) beta-chain. Furthermore, hemoglobin-immobilized affinity chromatography an

The effects of magnesium deficiency on epinephrine-induced ventricular tachyarrhythmia were investigated in adult rats. Forty-two adult Wistar rats were fed a magnesium-deficient diet while 30 rats were fed a standard diet for 20 days. The plasma magnesium concentration was lower in the magnesium-deficient rats (0.22+/-0.01 mmol/l) than in the control rats (0.76+/-0.03 mmol/l, P < 0.001). Using a telemetry system, electrocardiograms and arterial blood pressure were recorded on a polygraph in an unrestrained condition. Epinephrine was infused intravenously starting at 5 microg/kg per minute. Th…

Recently, we showed that magnesium deficiency induces lesions in knee joint cartilage from 5-week-old rats that are very similar to ofloxacin-induced cartilage defects. We concluded that quinolone-induced arthropathy is probably due to chelation of magnesium and thus a deficit in functionally available magnesium in joint cartilage (Stahlmann et al. 1995). As magnesium deficiency in joint cartilage could impair chondrocyte-matrix interaction which is mediated by cation-dependent integrin receptors of the beta 1-subfamily, we investigated integrin expression in joint cartilage from untreated, of…

OBJECTIVE: To determine nutrient intake of patients with active rheumatoid arthritis and compare it with the typical American diet (TAD) and the recommended dietary allowance (RDA).
METHODS: 41 patients with active RA recorded a detailed dietary history. Information collected was analyzed for nutrient intake of energy, fats, protein, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals, which were then statistically compared with the TAD and the RDA.
RESULTS: Both men and women ingested significantly less energy from carbohydrates [women 47.4% (6.4) vs 55% RDA. p = 0.0001: men = 48.9% (7.4). p = 0.025] and m

The effect of dietary magnesium deficiency on the pressor and arrhythmogenic responses to epinephrine was investigated in 19 dogs maintained either on a normal diet (11 dogs) or a diet deficient in magnesium (8 dogs). Magnesium-deficient dogs had significantly lower serum magnesium levels than the control dogs on a normal diet. Magnesium-deficient dogs showed an increased pressor sensitivity to epinephrine as determined by the dose of epinephrine required to cause a maximal pressor response (3.4 micrograms/kg/min compared to 13.4 micrograms/kg/min, p < 0.05). Magnesium-deficient dogs also had …

Dietary deficiency of magnesium (Mg) in rodents results in cardiomyopathic lesion formation. In our rat model, these lesions develop after 3 weeks on the Mg-deficient diet; significant elevation of several cytokines, IL-1, IL-6 and TNF alpha also occurs. In probing the mechanisms of lesion formation, we obtained data supporting the participation of free radicals (Freedman AM et al.: Bioch Biophys Res Commun 1990; 170: 1102). Recently, we identified an early elevation of circulating substance P and proposed a role of neurogenic peptides during Mg-deficiency (Weglicki WB, Phillips TM: AM J Phys

The aim of our study was to analyse the possible implication of the serotoninergic system in the pathophysiology and the lethality of audiogenic seizures induced by magnesium deficiency, either by decreasing cerebral serotonin (5-HT) levels (p-chlorophenylalanine) or by increasing 5-HT levels in the brain (5-hydroxytryptophan, L-tryptophan, nialamide, fluoxetine). In magnesium-deficient mice, the percentages of audiogenic seizures and of fatal seizures were dependent on the time lapse between the p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) injection and the audiogenic test. The percentage was at least 24 h a…

Stress intensifies release of catecholamines and corticosteroids that increase survival of normal animals when their lives are threatened. When magnesium (Mg) deficiency exists, stress paradoxically increases risk of cardiovascular damage including hypertension, cerebrovascular and coronary constriction and occlusion, arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death (SCD). In affluent societies, severe dietary Mg deficiency is uncommon, but dietary imbalances such as high intakes of fat and/or calcium (Ca) can intensify Mg inadequacy, especially under conditions of stress. Adrenergic stimulation of lipoly

The influence of the source of dietary Fe (ferric citrate alone or mixed with bovine blood at a proportion of 1:1 (v/v)) on the digestive utilization of Fe, P, Ca and Mg, and on haemoglobin regeneration efficiency (HRE) was investigated in control and Fe-deficient rats. Diet A contained (by analysis) 43.5 mg Fe/kg diet (as ferric citrate), and diet B contained 44.3 mg Fe/kg diet (ferric citrate-bovine blood). In Fe-deficient rats fed on diet A or B the apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of Fe increased by 42.3 and 45.7% respectively. The ADC of Ca and Mg decreased significantly in Fe-def
