The electrophysiology of neuroHIV: A systematic review of EEG and MEG studies in people with HIV infection since the advent of highly-active antiretroviral therapy.

OBJECTIVE: The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has an impact on the brain, even when the infection is well-controlled with modern highly-active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). While dementia is rare in those on HAART, milder cognitive impairment is common. The causes, patterns, and evolution of brain dysfunction in people living with HIV remain uncertain. We evaluate whether electrophysiological methods provide informative measures of brain dysfunction in this population. METHODS: A systematic literature search identified studies that used EEG or MEG to evaluate persons living with HIV pub

Impact of electroconvulsive therapy on magnetoencephalographic correlates of dysfunctional emotional processing in major depression.

In major depressive disorder (MDD), electrophysiological and imaging studies provide evidence for a reduced neural activity in parietal and dorsolateral prefrontal regions. In the present study, neural correlates and temporal dynamics of visual affective perception have been investigated in patients with unipolar depression in a pre/post treatment design using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Nineteen in-patients and 19 balanced healthy controls passed MEG measurement while passively viewing pleasant, unpleasant and neutral pictures. After a 4-week treatment with electroconvulsive therapy or 4-we…

High frequency spectral components after secobarbital: the contribution of muscular origin--a study with MEG/EEG.

OBJECTIVES: Previously we found that benzodiazepines not only provoke beta-activity in the EEG, but also higher frequency activity. Knowing the origin of this high frequency activity is crucial if localisation of epileptogenic brain tissue is the query. We attempt to differentiate cerebral from muscular origin of such activity. METHODS: We postulate that EEG and MEG have similar sensitivity to brain activity, but different sensitivity to muscle activity, and compare co-recorded EEG and MEG signals in a group of five patients who had received short-lasting barbiturates to induce sleep. We perf

Localization of epileptic foci in children with intractable epilepsy secondary to multiple cortical tubers by using synthetic aperture magnetometry kurtosis.

OBJECT: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) has been typically used to localize epileptic activity by modeling interictal activity as equivalent current dipoles (ECDs). Synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM) is a recently developed adaptive spatial filtering algorithm for MEG that provides some advantages over the ECD approach. The SAM-kurtosis algorithm (also known as SAM[g2]) additionally provides automated temporal detection of spike sources by using excess kurtosis value (steepness of epileptic spike on virtual sensors). To evaluate the efficacy of the SAM(g2) method, the authors applied it to rea…

Default-mode brain dysfunction in mental disorders: a systematic review.

In this review we are concerned specifically with the putative role of the default-mode network (DMN) in the pathophysiology of mental disorders. First, we define the DMN concept with regard to its neuro-anatomy, its functional organisation through low frequency neuronal oscillations, its relation to other recently discovered low frequency resting state networks, and the cognitive functions it is thought to serve. Second, we introduce methodological and analytical issues and challenges. Third, we describe putative mechanisms proposed to link DMN abnormalities and mental disorders. These includ

[Chronic dizziness in elderly people: its clinical characteristics and magneto-encephalographic findings].

Many elderly people complain dizziness which may continue occasionally for months or years. According to epidemiological studies, 25-29% of subjects with more than 60 years of age have the experience of dizziness. Dizziness occurs most commonly during head positional changes or walking. Clinical studies have indicated that causes of dizziness are nonspecific and multi-factorial; cerebrovascular diseases, cervical spondylosis, depressive state, poor vision, orthostatic hypotension, whiplash injury, or low cerebrospinal fluid syndrome may play a role in the development of dizziness. Patients wit

Altered generation of spontaneous oscillations in Alzheimer's disease.

Slowing of spontaneous alpha oscillations and an anterior shift of a source of alpha activity (8-13 Hz) have been consistently reported in the EEG studies of Alzheimer's disease (AD). It is unknown whether these changes are associated with a gradual shift in location and frequency of existing sources or rather with the involvement of a new set of oscillators. We addressed this question by applying source modeling (minimum current estimates, MCE) to spontaneous alpha activity recorded with a 306-channel MEG system from eleven non-medicated AD patients with mild to moderate cognitive impairment

Fooling your feelings: artificially induced referred sensations are linked to a modulation of the primary somatosensory cortex.

Recent studies demonstrated tactile illusions in healthy subjects by manipulating visual and tactile information. For example, a rubber hand, lying on a table in front of the subject and not connected with the body, can be felt by the subject as belonging to his or her own body by a simple visuotactile manipulation. Aim of the present study was to create an illusion in which the subject feels touch on a body site which is different from the actual touch, hence showing a referral of touch similar to those reported in phantom limb patients. Since it is known from animal studies that tactile illu

Auditory cortical responses to speech-like stimuli in dyslexic adults.

Auditory cortical processing of speech-like sounds was studied in 9 dyslexic and 11 normal-reading adults. Noise/square-wave sequences, mimicking transitions from a fricative consonant to a vowel, were presented binaurally once every 1.1 sec and the cortical responses were recorded with a whole-scalp neuromagnetometer. The auditory cortices of both hemispheres were less reactive to acoustical changes in dyslexics than in controls, as was evident from the weaker responses to the noise/square-wave transitions. The results demonstrate that dyslexic adults are deficient in processing acoustic chan

Nonlinear sensory cortex response to simultaneous tactile stimuli in writer's cramp.

Writer's cramp is a task-specific dystonia that leads to involuntary hand postures during writing. Abnormalities of sensory processing may play a pathophysiological role in this disorder. Electrophysiology studies in a monkey model of focal dystonia have revealed de-differentiation of sensory maps and the existence of single cells in hand regions of area 3b with enlarged receptive fields that extend to the surfaces of more than one digit. These changes may lead to abnormal processing of simultaneous sensory inputs. To study abnormal processing of simultaneous sensory information in adult human

Modified activity of the human auditory cortex during auditory hallucinations.

Previous reports have shown abnormalities in brain metabolism and evoked responses of schizophrenic patients with hallucinations. The authors recorded electric and magnetic auditory responses during transitory auditory hallucinations in two patients. Small but replicable response delays occurred during hallucinations. The results suggest that the effect of hallucinations on auditory cortex activity is similar to the effect of real sounds.

Mapping neural signatures of face processing in young children: an OPM-MEG study.

Facial expressions are fundamental to social communication, with emotional face processing developing throughout childhood. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this process in young children remain underexplored due to challenges in neuroimaging this population. Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs), a wearable magnetoencephalography (MEG) technology, offer potential advantages for studying these responses early in life. This study investigated evoked responses and functional connectivity in 45 children (3-5 years) during an emotional face processing task using OPM-MEG. The M170 componen…

Changes in auditory evoked responses at different levels of linguistic processing in adults and school-age children: An MEG study.

While the development of speech processing begins early in life, adult-level language proficiency takes a significant amount of time to emerge. How children comprehend speech with their immature auditory systems and how they gradually achieve adult-like language proficiency remains poorly understood. The present study used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to examine developmental changes during auditory processing of language in school-age children and adults at multiple levels of representation. Twenty-one children (ages 7-15 years) and twenty-five adults (ages 18-40 years) listened to repeated s…

Functional connectivity across the lifespan: a cross-sectional analysis of changes.

In the era of functional brain networks, our understanding of how they evolve across life in a healthy population remains limited. Here, we investigate functional connectivity across the human lifespan using magnetoencephalography in a cohort of 792 healthy individuals, categorized into young (13 to 30 yr), middle (31 to 54 yr), and late adulthood (55 to 80 yr). Employing corrected imaginary phase-locking value, we map the evolving landscapes of connectivity within delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma classical frequency bands among brain areas. Our findings reveal significant shifts in functi…

Brain activity characteristics of RGB stimulus: an EEG study.

The perception of color is a fundamental cognitive feature of our psychological experience, with an essential role in many aspects of human behavior. Several studies used magnetoencephalography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and electroencephalography (EEG) approaches to investigate color perception. Their methods includes the event-related potential and spectral power activity of different color spaces, such as Derrington-Krauskopf-Lennie and red-green-blue (RGB), in addition to exploring the psychological and emotional effects of colors. However, we found insufficient studies in RGB…

Short-term plasticity of neuro-auditory processing induced by musical active listening training.

Although there is strong evidence for the positive effects of musical training on auditory perception, processing, and training-induced neuroplasticity, there is still little knowledge on the auditory and neurophysiological short-term plasticity through listening training. In a sample of 37 adolescents (20 musicians and 17 nonmusicians) that was compared to a control group matched for age, gender, and musical experience, we conducted a 2-week active listening training (AULOS: Active IndividUalized Listening OptimizationS). Using magnetoencephalography and psychoacoustic tests, the short-term p…

Three-Year Reliability of MEG Visual and Somatosensory Responses.

A major goal of many translational neuroimaging studies is the identification of biomarkers of disease. However, a prerequisite for any such biomarker is robust reliability, which for magnetoencephalography (MEG) and many other imaging modalities has not been established. In this study, we examined the reliability of visual (Experiment 1) and somatosensory gating (Experiment 2) responses in 19 healthy adults who repeated these experiments for three visits spaced 18 months apart. Visual oscillatory and somatosensory oscillatory and evoked responses were imaged, and intraclass correlation coeffi…

Visual gamma oscillations predict sensory sensitivity in females as they do in males.

Gamma oscillations are driven by local cortical excitatory (E)-inhibitory (I) loops and may help to characterize neural processing involving excitatory-inhibitory interactions. In the visual cortex reliable gamma oscillations can be recorded with magnetoencephalography (MEG) in the majority of individuals, which makes visual gamma an attractive candidate for biomarkers of brain disorders associated with E/I imbalance. Little is known, however, about if/how these oscillations reflect individual differences in neural excitability and associated sensory/perceptual phenomena. The power of visual g…

Cortical volume and sex influence visual gamma.

Visually induced gamma-band activity (GBA) has been implicated in several central cognitive functions, in particular perceptual binding, the feedforward routing of attended stimulus information and memory encoding. Several studies have documented that the strength and frequency of GBA are influenced by both subject-intrinsic factors like age, and subject-extrinsic factors such as stimulus contrast. Here, we investigated the relative contributions of previously tested factors, additional factors, and their interactions, in a cohort of 158 subjects recorded with magnetoencephalography (MEG). In …
