[Benign tumors and mandibular resection. The place of resection grafts in the treatment of benign tumors of the mandible].

Data were analyzed from case-reports of 80 patients undergoing resection graft procedures for benign mandibular tumors, and operated upon and followed up in the Stomatology and maxillo-facial surgical Unit, Hospital Salpêtrière, Paris from 1970 to 1984. In 27 cases surgery was by first intention; in the others it followed one or several previous operations, their multiplicity sensibly affecting the decision to operate and the development of postoperative suppurations.

[Limitations in the opening of the mouth of an arthrogenic nature].

Mouth opening limitations of arthrogenous nature are subdivided according to a personal schedule into indirect and direct types. The former are brought on by occlusal alterations: these affect articular remodelling and may cause anatomical and functional changes of varying gravity in the temporo-mandibular joint with consequent limitations on opening movements. The latter are the consequence of various pathogenic agents (traumatic, neoplastic, inflammatory, degenerative) originating within the articular structures and developing therein, progressively limiting their function. Some significant

Computed tomography in differential diagnosis of temporomandibular joint disorders.

Computed tomography (CT) has great potential for imaging intra- and extracapsular hard-tissue abnormality of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). CT is not the best method of imaging disk position and form. For differential diagnosis of TMJ disorders, CT is especially successful in bony lesions. The study includes 16 examples of TMJ hard-tissue abnormality. In the differential diagnosis of all cases, CT played a decisive role.

Breast cancer metastases to the head and neck: Case series and literature review.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and is the second most common cause of cancer-related death. Despite the relatively high prevalence of this disease, breast cancer manifestations in the head and neck are relatively rare. Supraclavicular lymphadenopathy and bony metastases to the mandible and maxilla are the most common manifestation of breast cancer in the head and neck. Head and neck metastases are the first presentation of distant disease in approximately one-third of cases. The prognosis of breast cancer with distant metastases to the head and neck is generally poor, and the

Tubulopapillary hidradenoma-like tumor of the mandible.

Tubulopapillary hidradenomas are uncommon benign tumors of the dermis, most commonly occurring in the skin of the head or of the extremities. Complete excision is generally curative and recurrences are rare. The authors describe an unusual case of an intraosseous tubulopapillary hidradenoma of the mandible that recurred 1 year after initial curettage and required en-bloc resection.

Ameloblastic carcinoma: report of an aggressive case with multiple bony metastases.

Ameloblastic carcinoma is a rare primary tumor of the maxillofacial skeleton with a distinct predilection for the mandible. These lesions may initially show histologic features of ameloblastoma that dedifferentiate over time. Other ameloblastic carcinomas initially present with morphologic features suggestive of ameloblastoma with areas of epithelial dedifferentiation. We herein report a rare case of aggressive ameloblastic carcinoma in a 22-year-old white man who developed widespread bony metastases and expired 4 years after initial diagnosis.

DentaScan: a new diagnostic method for evaluating mandibular and maxillary pathology.

Although computerized tomography (CT) is valuable for evaluating head and neck pathology, it can be suboptimal when evaluating the presence or extent of mandibular and maxillary involvement by tumor, infection, or other pathology. The presence of dental restoration artifact, CT gantry positioning problems, and the inability to obtain cross-sectional images will diminish the accuracy of standard CT images. A program, termed either DentaScan or multiplanar reformation (CT/MPR), eliminates these problems by processing axial CT scan information to obtain true cross-sectional images and panoramic v

Restoration of the mandible by full-thickness calvarial bone flap.

Two patients with reconstruction of a massive mandibular defect with vascularized full-thickness calvarial bone flaps are reported. In Patient 1, the mandibular body developed osteomyelitis and once was replaced with a metallic prosthesis. The prosthesis later perforated the skin and was removed. Full-thickness calvarial bone flaps were elevated bilaterally to reconstruct the mandibular body. In Patient 2, the mandible was totally destroyed by invasion of squamous cell carcinoma. The lower one-half of the face was resected and replaced with a large island scalp flap with full-thickness calvari

Paraneoplastic hypercalcemia in a canine patient with a mandibular salivary carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel presentation of paraneoplastic hypercalcemia caused by a canine salivary carcinoma. ANIMAL: A 6-year-old intact male Husky with hypercalcemia and a spontaneous salivary carcinoma, stage III. CLINICAL PRESENTATION, PROGRESSION, AND PROCEDURES: The dog presented with polyuria, polydipsia, and hypercalcemia. Physical examination revealed a 37 X 43-mm firm mass in the ventrolateral aspect of the right-hand side of the neck, caudal to the temporomandibular joint. Incisional biopsy was suspicious of metastatic carcinoma to the mandibular lymph node. A full-body CT sc

Condylectomy as the treatment for active unilateral condylar hyperplasia of the mandible and severe facial asymmetry: retrospective review over 18 years.

Unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) of the mandible is a disorder affecting the condyle size, resulting in facial asymmetry. This study was a retrospective review of 27 patients with UCH who underwent condylectomy between 2000 and 2017 at Yonsei University Dental Hospital. Patient demographic characteristics were summarized. UCH was divided into three subtypes: hemimandibular elongation (HE, n=15), hemimandibular hyperplasia (HH, n=4), and osteochondroma (OC, n=8). Of the 27 patients, only one with the HE type and five (18.5%) with the OC type complained of joint pain. Bone scans of all pati

Nonossifying fibroma (metaphyseal fibrous defect) of the mandible in a 15-year-old boy.

We describe a rare case of nonossifying fibroma of the mandible in a 15-year-old boy who presented with a left mandibular swelling. Conventional imaging showed an expansile radiolucent lesion involving the angle and the body of the left mandible. The lesion was curetted, and a miniplate was implanted at the excision site. Microscopic examination of the removed specimen revealed a cellular lesion characterized by a proliferation of uniform spindle-shaped cells in a vague but prominent storiform pattern, which represented the classic appearance of nonossifying fibroma. Three months later, radiog

Mucinous adenocarcinoma of lung presenting as oral metastases: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Metastasis of a malignant tumor to the oral cavity is rare and can indicate an unknown primary tumor. METHODS: Described is a case of metastatic tumor in the right jaw. The patient was a 50-year-old woman who consulted her dentist with complaints of tooth pain and an abscess. The clinical examination showed an abscess around the mandibular right first molar and second premolar tooth. Teeth were extracted and two periapical, nontypical cystic lesions were excised. RESULTS: The histopathological analysis revealed mucinous malignant cells embedded in an inflammatory infiltration and

Metastatic breast carcinoma initially diagnosed as pulpal/periapical disease: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Metastatic tumors to oral cavity and jaws are rare, and mandible is the most commonly involved location. Because the most common jaw symptom is pain, these lesions could be misdiagnosed as pathologic entities with dental origin. In this article a case of metastatic breast carcinoma initially diagnosed as pulpal/periapical disease is presented and discussed. METHODS: A 40-year-old female patient was referred to our department with vague pain in right mandibular area. Clinical and radiographic examinations were performed, leading to the initial diagnosis. Patient's medical history

Gardner's syndrome: a case report.

Gardner's syndrome is characterised by polyposis coli associated with multiple hard and soft tissue tumours including osteoma and odontoma. The major significance of the condition lies in the gastrointestinal polyposis which usually undergoes malignant change by the fourth decade. Extra-intestinal components may be apparent before those in the bowel, and their early detection may lead to appropriate evaluation and life saving treatment. A case is reported to demonstrate how important it is for general dental practitioners to be aware of the clinical and radiological characteristics of Gardner'

Ameloblastoma in the Hong Kong Chinese. Part 2: systematic review and radiological presentation.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this part of the study was to determine the radiological presentation on conventional radiographs of central ameloblastomas in the Hong Kong Chinese and compare them with other reported series by a systematic review (SR). METHODS: The study had two elements, that of a complete series of all ameloblastomas presenting at a major Chinese maxillofacial surgical unit and a SR. The files of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the University of Hong Kong between 1989 and 2000 were reviewed for ameloblastoma cases. The relevant literature was identified by elect

Oral neurofibrosarcoma associated with neurofibromatosis type I.

One of the most feared complications of neurofibromatosis type I (NF-I) is development of cancer, which is estimated to occur in about 5% of cases. The most common associated malignancy is the neurofibrosarcoma (NFS). HOwever, oral NFS in association with NF-I has rarely been reported. We report two cases of oral NFS arising in patients with NF-I. Both patients died of their tumors. Oral NFS arising in association with NF-I appears to have an extremely poor prognosis, as do these tumors at other sites of the body.
