Morphological Buffering in Neuro-Architecture: Interactive Effects of Color, Shape, and Area Proportion on Affective Processing.

While architectural visual features significantly influence human emotion, the spatiotemporal neuro-mechanisms underlying their interactive effects remain poorly under-researched. This study systematically decoupled the dynamics of indoor spatial perception by investigating the interactive impacts of color combination, color shape, and area proportion to find out the effects on participants' emotion. By integrating high-resolution electroencephalography (EEG), specifically analyzing the N200, late positive potential (LPP), Frontal Alpha Asymmetry (FAA), and Beta bands with Self-Assessment Mani

Low vitamin D and the risk of developing chronic widespread pain: results from the European male ageing study.

BACKGROUND: The association between low levels of vitamin D and the occurrence of chronic widespread pain (CWP) remains unclear. The aim of our analysis was to determine the relationship between low vitamin D levels and the risk of developing CWP in a population sample of middle age and elderly men. METHODS: Three thousand three hundred sixty nine men aged 40-79 were recruited from 8 European centres for a longitudinal study of male ageing, the European Male Ageing Study. At baseline participants underwent assessment of lifestyle, health factors, physical characteristics and gave a fasting bl

Frontal Crash Injury Metrics Are Below Mandated Limits for a Spica Casted Child Dummy in Currently Available Restraints.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data defining safe transport protocols for children treated with hip spica casting. Although restraint devices for casted children are available, all federally mandated testing uses a noncasted anthropomorphic test device (ATD or crash dummy). The purpose of this study was to evaluate current restraint options in simulated frontal crash testing using a casted pediatric ATD to determine injury risk to the head, cervical spine, chest, and pelvis. METHODS: Using a 3-year-old ATD, dynamic crash sled tests simulating frontal crash were performed in accordance with

An innovative method for teaching anatomy in the predoctoral dental curriculum.

New methods of teaching gross anatomy are being evaluated as medical and dental schools attempt to find time in their curricula for new content without sacrificing essential anatomical knowledge. This article reports on an innovative method of teaching anatomy at New York University College of Dentistry. In 2005, the instructors completely replaced the dissection of wet cadavers with the study of dissected and sliced plastinated specimens. The shift from cadaver dissection to the study of plastinated specimens was accompanied by other changes in the anatomy course: students study in small, con

Lethal smothering with a pillow - How 181 music festival visitors tried to kill a dummy.

PURPOSE: Smothering to death is most often done with a soft cover, such as a pillow. This is one of the hardest to diagnose causes of death. Knowing more about how people perform such an act and whether there is any correlation between perpetrator characteristics and smothering approaches may help in solving criminal cases involving smothering. METHODS: A total of 181 visitors of a music festival were asked to smother a dummy with a pillow. Each participant provided their age, gender, dominant hand, length, weight, alcohol use (last 24h) and drug use (last 24h) in a questionnaire. Forces appl

Feasibility and speed of insertion of seven supraglottic airway devices under simulated airway conditions.

OBJECTIVES: Endotracheal intubation (ETI) is considered the gold standard for protecting the airway. Alternative devices for airway protection have been developed that can be used by untrained personnel, by those with less experience, and for when ETI is not possible. The main goals of our study were to evaluate the success rate and speed of insertion of different supraglottic airway devices and to determine whether the devices could be properly inserted under simulated critical conditions. METHODS: Fifty medical students used an airway simulation trainer (Laerdal SimMan 3G) to assess the suc

Performance Comparisons of Jet and Mesh Nebulizers Using Different Interfaces in Simulated Spontaneously Breathing Adults and Children.

BACKGROUND: Different types of nebulizers and interfaces are used for the treatment of adults and children with pulmonary diseases. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency of a mesh nebulizer (MN) with a proprietary adapter and a jet nebulizer (JN) under different configurations in adult and pediatric models of spontaneous breathing. We hypothesize that delivery efficiency of JN and MN will differ depending on the interface used during aerosol therapy in simulated spontaneously breathing adult and pediatric models. While we expect that aerosol delivery with JN will be less ef

Contribution of facial feature dimensions and velocity parameters on particle inhalability.

To examine whether the actual dimensions of human facial features are important to the development of a low-velocity inhalable particulate mass sampling criterion, this study evaluated the effect of facial feature dimensions (nose and lips) on estimates of aspiration efficiency of inhalable particles using computational fluid dynamics modeling over a range of indoor air and breathing velocities. Fluid flow and particle transport around four humanoid forms with different facial feature dimensions were simulated. All forms were facing the wind (0.2, 0.4 m s(-1)), and breathing was simulated with
