Neurologic abnormalities in schizophrenic patients and their families. I. Comparison of schizophrenic, bipolar, and substance abuse patients and normal controls.

The prevalence of neurologic abnormalities detectable on standard clinical examination by neurologists blind to diagnosis was compared for DSM-III-diagnosed, age- and sex-matched groups consisting of 24 schizophrenic (SCZ) patients, 24 patients with bipolar affective disorder (MDI) with history of psychosis, 24 patients hospitalized for alcohol or other drug abuse (D/A), and 24 normal volunteers (NL). The SCZ group had significantly more total abnormalities than the other three; both the MDI and D/A groups in turn had more total abnormalities than normal controls. After exclusion of findings d

Somatization disorder in a community population.

The data recently collected in the Piedmont region of North Carolina as part of the National Institute of Mental Health Epidemiologic Catchment Area Program were used to examine somatization disorder in a community population. The authors found an adjusted prevalence of 0.38% for somatization disorder diagnosed according to the Diagnostic Interview Schedule and DSM-III. Respondents with somatization disorder demonstrated demographic characteristics (female, unmarried, nonwhite, from a rural area, less educated) that are consistent with findings from past clinical and epidemiologic studies of s

Predicting length of hospital stay of psychiatric patients.

Data from 105 psychiatric patients in the adolescent, young adult, and older adult age ranges and in various diagnosis-related groups confirmed the hypothesis that patients' length of stay in a hospital for a psychiatric disorder is increased by greater amounts of stress and decreased by higher levels of functioning. The authors propose a formula, length of stay = function of axis IV score/axis V score, to test this relationship. The findings point to a potentially useful approach for making decisions on length of stay, i.e., the use of more reliable scales than the global rating scale of axis

The late-onset psychoses. Clinical and diagnostic features.

Psychoses of late onset are poorly understood due to a limited number of inconsistent studies. The authors conducted this study to determine the clinical characteristics of a clearly defined group of patients with onset of psychosis after age 65 years and to test the usefulness of DSM-III criteria in diagnosing the condition of these patients. Late-onset psychosis occurred in 8% of the patients admitted to the geropsychiatry unit during the study period. More than three quarters of these patients suffered from either an organic mental disorder or major affective disorder, the remainder having

Evaluating nicotine replacement therapy and stage-based therapies in a population-based effectiveness trial.

Pharmacological interventions for smoking cessation are typically evaluated using volunteer samples (efficacy trials) but should also be evaluated in population-based trials (effectiveness trials). Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) alone and in combination with behavioral interventions was evaluated on a population of smokers from a New England Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Telephone interviews were completed with 3,239 smokers, and 2,054 agreed to participate (64%). Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: stage-matched manuals (MAN); NRT plus manuals (NRT + MAN); ex

A Scoping Review on Conversational Memory and Characteristics of Conversations in Alzheimer's Disease.

PURPOSE: Typical late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) compromises episodic memory, the ability to encode new events and recollect past events. Much of the research on episodic memory in AD has relied on lab-based memory tasks (e.g., word lists, short stories). It is unclear how well these tasks characterize the impact of episodic memory impairments across different domains of everyday life, including conversational memory. The goal of the review was to establish what is known about conversational memory in AD, that is, memory for the content of conversations one overhears or in which one partic

Isolated teratozoospermia: revisiting its relevance in male infertility: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Basic semen analysis is the first step in the evaluation of male infertility. It includes an assessment of sperm morphology which is believed to reflect on overall spermatogenesis and sperm function. Teratozoospermia, defined as abnormal sperm morphology, is frequently present in association with severe oligoasthenozoospermia, but isolated teratozoospermia (in the presence of normal counts and motility) is a poorly understood clinical entity with conflicting implications in terms of fertility potential and treatment strategies. The following paper aims to: (I) discuss

United Voices Group-Singing Intervention to Address Loneliness and Social Isolation Among Older People With HIV During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Intervention Adaption Study.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV experience HIV stigma alongside a spectrum of aging-related health conditions that accelerate their vulnerability to the ill effects of loneliness and social isolation. Group-singing interventions are efficacious in improving psychosocial well-being among older people in the general population; however, the social curative effects of group singing have not been explored in relation to HIV stigma. By promoting group identification, bonding, and pride, group singing may reduce loneliness, social isolation, and other negative impacts of HIV stigma among older pe

Guidance for identification and treatment of individuals with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder based upon expert consensus.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with co-occurring hyperactivity disorder/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can have complex presentations that may complicate diagnosis and treatment. There are established guidelines with regard to the identification and treatment of ADHD and ASD as independent conditions. However, ADHD and ASD were not formally recognised diagnostically as co-occurring conditions until the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 (DSM-5) was published in 2013. Hence, awareness and understanding of both conditions when they co-occur is less

Childbirth information needs for first time Malawian mothers who attended antenatal clinics.

UNLABELLED: Childbirth information received by mothers during antenatal period influences their satisfaction with the care during perinatal period. It is important for the midwives to know the type of information that satisfies their clients. This study found that the childbirth information that mothers received during antenatal period did not satisfy them. On the other hand, although some of the information received at home was useful, some information had potential to cause fear, anxiety and ill health on the mothers. The information needs of the clients were taken into account when designin

Exploring Inflammatory Bowel Disease Discourse on Reddit Throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic Using OpenAI's GPT-3.5 Turbo Model: Classification Model Validation and Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic autoimmune disorder with an increasing prevalence in the general population. Internet-based communities have become vital for communication among patients with IBD, especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these internet-based patient-to-patient communications remain largely underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze community posts from 3 of the largest IBD support groups on Reddit between March 1, 2020, and December 31, 2022, using a pretrained transformer model, and to validate the classification system's resu

Efficacy and efficiency of a new therapeutic approach based on activity-oriented proprioceptive antiedema therapy (TAPA) for edema reduction and improved occupational performance in the rehabilitation of breast cancer-related arm lymphedema in women: a controlled, randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) is a major public health issue. More than one out of five women treated for breast cancer will develop lymphedema in an upper extremity. Current evidence advocates transdisciplinary oncological rehabilitation. Therefore, research in this area is necessary since limited consensus having been reached with regard to the basic essential components of this rehabilitation. Consensus has, however, been reached on the use of decongestive lymphedema therapy (DLT), but due to a lack of tests, the necessary dosages are unknown and its level is moderately strong. This study

Older adults and smoking: Characteristics, nicotine dependence and prevalence of DSM-IV 12-month disorders.

OBJECTIVES: There are few studies investigating the characteristics of older smokers. Research on younger adults has determined that (1) the diagnostic and statistical manual (DSM) diagnosis of nicotine dependence (ND) excludes a sizable portion of the smoking population, and (2) younger smokers have high rates of comorbid DSM disorders. In this study, we sought to replicate these results in an older population. METHOD: Based on a large representative sample, we examined the smoking patterns in adults aged 50 and over (N = 2139). We describe the characteristics of the current smokers (n = 410

Experiential avoidance in idiographic, autobiographical memories: construct validity and links to social anxiety, depressive, and anger symptoms.

Experiential avoidance, or attempts to alter or avoid undesirable thoughts and feelings, has been theorized to be relevant to the development of emotional disturbances, particularly anxiety problems. Prior work has relied on two methodologies: global self-report measures or laboratory manipulations. To better understand links between experiential avoidance and emotional disturbances, we measured experiential avoidance in the context of prominent anxious autobiographical events. Trained raters coded events for emotionality and reliance on experiential avoidance. Our interest was whether experie

State and trait in personality disorders.

BACKGROUND: The current definitions of personality disorder indicate early onset, long duration and disorders of relatively stable severity. It has been noticed by a number of authors and researchers that at times personality pathology can be quite variable and not fit that model. METHODS: This report examines the possibility that there is a valid psychiatric disorder whose key feature is episodic personality dysfunction. The disorder would be designated State personality disorder (State PD) to separate it from Trait personality disorder (Trait PD), which is the non episodic form, and from no

Shenjing shuairuo and the DSM-IV: diagnosis, distress, and disability in a Chinese primary care setting.

This study examines diagnostic concordance, symptomatology and disability among Chinese patients with shenjing shuairuo, ICD-10 neurasthenia, and DSM-IV diagnoses. Patients (N=139) with unexplained somatic complaints completed the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III (SCID), the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), and the Short Form 36 (SF-36). Shenjing shuairuo could be reclassified as DSM-IV undifferentiated somatoform disorder (30.6%) and somatoform pain disorder (22.4%); however, 44.9% did not qualify for a core DSM-IV diagnosis. Concordance of neurasthenia and shenjing shuairuo was signif
