A case of congenital factor VII deficiency in a five-year-old child is reported. The patient, born of a non-consanguineous marriage, presented with repeated bouts of epistaxis since childhood. The prothrombin time (PT) was markedly prolonged with a normal bleeding time (BT), partial thromboplastin time with Kaolin (PTTK) and platelet count. The patient has been on follow up for the last four years and is doing apparently well.

A 51-year-old woman had had night blindness since childhood and a progressive visual field defect. She was the product of a consanguineous marriage. The patient also exhibited numerous whitish-yellow punctate spots with no pigment deposition in her fundi, nonrecordable electroretinographic responses after 30 min of dark adaptation, and constricted visual fields bilaterally. We believe that our patient may be a case of retinitis punctata albescens without pigment.

This article describes and discusses a teaching case of a clinical training situation involving a gay marriage and family therapy student working with a same-sex affectional couple. The conceptual pillars of this teaching case, relational safety and liberating spaces, are advanced as illustrations of how the student developed his voice in the training process. Pivotal moments in this process are discussed, as are implications for training and personal and professional growth.

Recent years have witnessed considerable advances in the nosography and molecular genetics of the hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies of autosomal dominant and X-linked recessive inheritance. Those with autosomal recessive inheritance are in general much less common, although in some communities where consanguineous marriages are prevalent they represent the most frequently encountered forms. They are now beginning to be characterized both clinically and genetically.

This paper examines efforts by some churches in Ghana to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS. The analysis is based on focus group discussions with two groups of men and two groups of women, along with in-depth interviews with 13 pastors and marriage counsellors in the churches studied.
