The frontotemporal region plays a role in the genesis of migraine without aura.

We have compared the migraine-inducing effect of nitroglycerin ointment applied to the frontotemporal region of the head, which is innervated by the ophthalmic and maxillary divisions of the trigeminal nerve, with that of nitroglycerin applied to the chin (innervated by the mandibular division), the posterolateral region of the neck (innervated by the second and third cervical roots), the lateral surface of the proximal third of the forearm (innervated by the sixth cervical root), and the medial surface of the upper-arm region (second dorsal root). One hundred patients suffering from migraine

Osseous Loading by a Volume-Reduced Tongue During Muscle Contractions.

PURPOSE: To investigate how tongue volume reduction affects loads on surrounding bone surfaces produced by neuromuscular stimulation of the tongue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of each pair of same-gender minipig siblings, 1 received tongue reduction and 1 underwent sham surgery. Either immediately (acute, 6 pairs) or 1 month (chronic, 5 pairs) after surgery, bone surface and/or suture strains and pressures were recorded from the following locations when the hypoglossal nerve trunk, hypoglossal nerve medial branch, hypoglossal nerve lateral branch, genioglossus, and styloglossus (SG) were electrica

A rare case report and appraisal of the literature on spontaneous tooth exfoliation associated with trigeminal herpes zoster.

BACKGROUND: Reports of post herpetic maxillofacial complications have been very rarely documented in the literature that includes periapical lesions, calcified and devitalized pulps, resorption of roots, osteonecrosis, and spontaneous exfoliation of teeth. The atypical feature of the case of concern to the dental surgeon is the rare complication of spontaneous tooth exfoliation following herpes zoster. CASE REPORT: This case reports a male patient of age 47 years who reported to the Department of Periodontology with the chief complaint of mobility in the left upper central incisor. Patient hi

Neurectomy of the trigeminal nerve branches: clinical evaluation of an "obsolete" treatment.

INTRODUCTION: After all options of conservative treatment of trigeminal neuralgia have been exhausted, surgical methods are used. Peripheral neurectomy is one of the simplest among them. It is a relatively obsolete method, but can still be useful and effective. AIMS: To analyse the remission period after repetitive neuroexeresis of the same neural branch, to calculate "predicted" remission, and to evaluate the benefits of repetitive neuroexeresis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Total of 85 neurectomies were performed in 36 patients in 5 years by intraoral access. The recurrence time was analysed by s

Orbitomaxillary mass after repair of the orbital floor.

A 48-year-old man presented with an orbitomaxillary mass 31 years after repair of the orbital floor. He gave a history of progressive diplopia and paraesthesiae of the right infraorbital nerve. He also noted improvement in his long-standing post-traumatic enophthalmos. Imaging showed a large orbitomaxillary cystic mass, which was thought to be secondary to a silicone implant. The implant and the cystic mass were removed, and the orbital floor was reconstructed with titanium mesh. Histological examination confirmed an inclusion cyst. Maxillary antral lesions can present with symptoms such as si

An unusual pattern of self-inflicted injury after dental local anesthesia: a report of 2 cases.

The local anesthetics used in dentistry are considered very safe and have a low incidence of adverse reactions associated with their administration. A frequent finding by clinicians engaged in treatment of children is, following a dental appointment requiring local anesthesia to treat dental disease, a child may bite his or her lip out of curiosity associated with the unfamiliar sensation of being numb or inadvertently because no pain is felt. We describe two unusual case reports of postanesthetic self-inflicted injuries in this article. The first being the ulceration due to lip biting and the

Functional load in oblique bicortical implants: parasinusal implants and palatine implants.

The history of intraosseous implantology, as a whole, begins with the introduction of the Formiggini screw. Single-piece implants were subsequently derived from titanium bars. The intrinsic function of the emerging stump was immediate loading. The great stability of the implant in the bone thus demanded was eventually achieved by means of the self-tapping screw and bicortical support. Oblique implants were subsequently adopted to make the best use of the bone available and to avoid zones at risk, such as the maxillary sinus and the inferior alveolar nerve. Angled stumps on osseointegrated 2-st

C-shape extended transconjunctival approach for the exposure and osteotomy of traumatic orbitozygomaticomaxillary deformities.

In the treatment of post-traumatic deformities of the orbitozygomaticomaxillary complex resulting from trauma, the most appropriate exposure must be used. The choice of exposures includes the bicoronal approach and the periorbital incisions. When the whole orbitozygomatic complex is malpositioned, the bicoronal approach is desirable; this can be combined with buccal and eyelid incisions. However, the bicoronal approach is complicated by a longer duration of operation time, post-surgical scars that tend to show, and potential damage to the temporal branch of the facial nerve. A new approach usi

Sphenoid and cavernous sinuses involvement as first site of metastasis from a fallopian tube carcinoma. Case report.

The occurrence of central nervous system metastases in ovarian cancer patients ranges from 0.88 to 4.5%. Centra nervous system involvement in a fallopian tube carcinoma is extremely rare. A 77-year-old woman with an invasive tubal carcinoma was admitted because of ophthalmoplegia, sparing the lateral rectus muscle of the left eye, a decreased left corneal reflex and hypoesthesia along the distribution of the ophthalmic and maxillary branches of the left trigeminal nerve. CT scan showed a space occupying lesion in the left sphenoid sinus invading the left cavernous sinus and the submucosa of th

Computed tomography of the nasopharynx and related spaces. Part II: Pathology.

Malignant tumors of the nasopharynx were analyzed by region of origin and route of spread. Nasopharyngeal carcinomas produced early submucosal infiltration of the deglutitional muscle layer with enlargement of the levator palati muscle and lateral displacement of the parapharyngeal space. Serous otitis media was frequently associated, and the trigeminal nerve was occasionally involved. Intracranial extension via the foramen lacerum was frequent. Metastases to the infratemporal fossa produced early involvement of the masticatory muscle layer with medial displacement of the parapharyngeal space.

[Ophthalmological long-term effects of malar fractures (author's transl)].

In the years 1964 to 1974 138 patients with malar fractures were treated by operation. After follow-up examination on an average of 3 years and 10 months after the operations the occuring complications in 61 patients were revealed. On the first stationary admission to hospital 14 patients complained of diplopia; on the follow-up examination only 5 paresiae were found. On the first examination after the accident 35 patients had hypoaesthesiae, anaesthesiae or paraesthesiae in the area of supply of the ophthalmic and maxillary nerves. It is remarkable that in the follow-up examination 29 patient…

Comparative study of the neuronal plasticity along the neuraxis of the vibrissal sensory system of adult rat following unilateral infraorbital nerve damage and subsequent regeneration.

The aim of the present study was to examine the physiological consequences of a unilateral infraorbital nerve lesion and its regeneration at different levels of the somatosensory neuraxis. In animals whose right infraorbital nerve had been crushed, a large unresponsive area was found in the main brainstem trigeminal nucleus (Pr5). Responses evoked by ipsilateral vibrissal deflection in the middle of Pr5 reappeared only on days 22-35 after the nerve had been transected, whereas recovery from the nerve crush took only 7-9 days. However, no sign of short-term neuronal plasticity was observed in P

Peripheral streptomycin/lidocaine injections versus lidocaine alone in the treatment of idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia. A double blind controlled trial.

Seventeen patients with long-lasting idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (ITN) were treated with either five, weekly peripheral streptomycin/lidocaine (S/L) or lidocaine alone injections, in a double blind controlled study. Eight patients responded initially to the treatment in the S/L group and three patients in the lidocaine group. Pain recurred in four patients from the S/L group within two weeks and six months following the last injection. One patient from the lidocaine group remained pain-free for eight months. At the final assessment, three patients from the S/L group and two patients from t

Evaluating miniscrew position using orthopantomograms compared to cone-beam computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to compare the diagnostic capabilities of the orthopantomogram (OPT) as a standard dental diagnostic procedure with those of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). We examined the extent to which the OPT allowed miniscrew position to be estimated, and whether probands from different backgrounds in dental medicine arrived at the same conclusions regarding the screw position using the same radiological images (OPTs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: First, a tomas® pin 8 mm in length and 1.2 mm in diameter (Dentaurum, Ispringen, Germany) was inserted in all four quadrants of n

Pediatric benign triton tumor of trigeminal nerve: a case report and literature review.

PURPOSE: Benign triton tumors (BTTs) in the pediatric population are extremely rare occurrences. Paucity of data on BTTs poses both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly when found intracranially. METHODS: A case report of a 10-year-old male diagnosed with incidental maxillary trigeminal (V2) BTT is presented. We discuss radiographic and histopathological interpretations. Furthermore, we provide a brief review of current literature and historical background on pediatric trigeminal BTT diagnosis, histopathology, and management. RESULTS: Successful gross total resection of the tu
