Four hundred and two patients with Meckel's diverticulum are reviewed. Symptoms referable to the diverticulum occurred in 68 patients or 16.9 per cent of the group. Obstruction of the small intestine, inflammation and lower gastrointestinal tract bleeding accounted for 90 per cent of the presenting symptoms. A 10.3 per cent mortality and a 17.6 per cent morbidity rate were noted for symptomatic diverticuli. A total of 155 cases of Meckel's diverticulum were analyzed: 122 were uncomplicated as opposed to 33 that were complicated. Resection of all uncomplicated diverticula had a course free of difficulty, while there was one death in the cases with complicated diverticula as a result of peritonitis after perforation of the diverticulum. A case of Meckel's diverticulum is presented in a 17-month-old girl following technetium pertechnetate radioisotope scan. The patient had presented 10 months earlier with the first episode of passing bloody stools. A Meckel's diverticulum was resected during surgery. Reasons for the original false-negative examination are presented.

A case of a male newborn infant with spontaneous perforation of Meckel's diverticulum is reported. The clinical course consisted of delayed occlusive disorders and bloody stools following 36 h of normal gastrointestinal transit, without pneumoperitoneum and infection. Pathogenesis of the perforation is discussed and the importance of early diagnosis, especially in maternity hospitals, is emphasized.

Five cases illustrating rare roentgenographic manifestations of Meckel's diverticulum are presented. Small bowel studies in 2 patients demonstrated a mucosal pattern identifiable as heterotopic gastric rugae, and in 2 other cases peptic ulcers were seen within the diverticulum. In 1 patient the diverticulum located in the right upper quadrant contained calcified enteroliths, and in another patient the diverticulum had fistulous communication with the appendix.

The serial scintiphotography following intravenous injection of Tc99m-ertechnetate was used for examination of 50 children aged from 11 months to 14 years. The method is founded on the Tc99m-pertechnetate property of selective accumulation in the gastric mucous membrane and in Meckel's diverticulum when the latter contains the ectopic gastric mucous membrane. In diagnosing a Meckel's diverticulum besides the conventional plain films of the abdomen with and without contrast and the angiographic special attention is called to the scanning with technetium. This examination can be very helpful in cases of children with gastrointestinal bleeding episodes in the diagnosis of a Meckel's diverticulum, if it contains ectopic gastric mucosa.
