A 7-month-old child presented to the emergency department (ED) with 2 hours of painless, nonprojectile emesis and a normal mental status. Over a 3-hour period in the ED, the child remained pain-free, but developed hematemesis, hematochezia, and lethargy, progressing to unresponsiveness. Neuroleptics of different groups were used to commit a suicide (91.3% of the cases), to obtain a toxicomanic effect (6.3%) and accidentally (1.8%). 3,343 forensic psychiatric examinations were recorded in Norway from 1980 to 1996. 294 patients were diagnosed as mentally retarded. The annual number of mentally retarded persons increased during the observation period, but the relative percentage remained stable. Björnstad syndrome in a patient with mental retardation: Pili torti or twisted hair can appear as an isolated defect, in association with other ectodermal defects, in association with other clinical features or can be acquired. Björnstad syndrome is a rare condition with apparent autosomal recessive inheritance, characterized by hearing loss and twisted hairs (pili torti). All patients with Björnstad syndrome reported thusfar have normal intelligence. We report on a patient with severe mental retardation and review the literature.

BACKGROUND: Rubella and congenital rubella syndrome remain a problem in the United States; institutionalized individuals are at higher risk. We assessed demographic variables and rubella serology in a population of institutionalized adults with mental retardation.
METHODS: Subjects were 181 institutionalized adults with mental retardation. We reviewed charts to determine patient's age, sex, race, and fertility status (if female), cause of mental retardation, and rubella history. Serologic testing to determine rubella immunity was done.
RESULTS: We found that 26.4% of subjects were nonimmune.

Sixty-four mentally retarded people with hemiplegia (35 females and 29 males), first recorded in 1963, were re-examined 30 years later for life expectancy. Detailed physical and mental states, lengths of hospital stays and other information were noted. Recent advances in diagnosis and prognosis of hemiplegics were included. The results of the study indicate that, with special provisions available, people with hemiplegia have the prospect of reaching pensionable age and beyond: the oldest female is 85 and the oldest male 76 years of age.

Clients with long term mental health problems can be particularly vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases, but nurses and other staff find it difficult to address the issues of sex and sexuality. More training courses would help to address this, but the attitudes of health professionals to these issues also need to be examined.

Mental health disorders in adolescence are pervasive, often carry into adulthood, and appear to be inversely associated with social status. We examine how structural aspects of neighborhood context, specifically, socioeconomic stratification and racial/ethnic segregation, affect adolescent emotional well-being by shaping subjective perceptions of their neighborhoods. BACKGROUND: Owing to the fact that Finnish police have been able to solve about 95% of all homicides during recent decades and because most homicide offenders are subjected to an intensive psychiatric evaluation, it was possible to examine data on 693 of 994 homicide offenders during an 8-year period.
METHODS: The prevalences of mental disorders of the homicide offenders were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) for the statistical increase in risk associated with specific mental disorders.
RESULTS: The results indicate that schizophrenia increases the OR of homicidal violence by about 8-fold
