Enhanced Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents: Impacts of Individualized Skills Coaching on Constructs of Suicidality.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of death and significant concerns for adolescents and young adults. Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) is an evidence-based intervention that effectively reduces life-threatening behaviors. Limited research examines the impact of adding individualized skills coaching sessions (ISCS) to the DBT-A model, a novel intervention referred to in this paper as "Enhanced DBT-A." This study evaluates the effectiveness of Enhanced DBT-A in reducing suicidality over 1 year of treatment in an outpatient and intensive outpatient setting. OBJECTIVE: De

A Practical Approach to Optimizing Support for Elite Athletes Using Performance Determinants and Moderating Factors.

BACKGROUND: Elite athlete support can involve substantial testing and monitoring data. A practical and meaningful framework can help practitioners optimize service delivery. PURPOSE: We present the concepts of performance determinants and moderating factors and emphasize prioritization of macroscopic (visually observable) measures for effective application in sports where direct athlete interaction is minimal. METHODS: We advocate that performance determinants are measures that must be enhanced to improve the targeted outcome, such as 100-m sprint time (example herein). In this case, the det

A coaching model for sonographers: enhancing skill competency in transcranial Doppler examinations.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial Doppler (TCD) imaging is a key screening tool for stroke prevention in children with sickle cell disease (SCD). Despite clear guidelines recommending annual TCD screening, compliance remains low due to limited access and insufficient training among ultrasound technologists. METHODS: A quality improvement initiative was implemented at a quaternary care children's hospital to increase the number of technologists proficient in TCD for SCD care. A structured coaching model was used, involving one-on-one training sessions, competency assessments, and collaboration with the

Don't Wait Till Tomorrow: How to Support Underrepresented Undergraduate HIV Researchers Today From the Voices of Emerging Leaders.

Undergraduate, underrepresented minority (URM) scholars must be comprehensively supported by the current HIV workforce to lead the future of HIV research. This commentary elaborates on the lived experience and outcomes of alumni from an undergraduate HIV research program and is written by alumni themselves. Undergraduate research enrichment programs for URM scholars are consistently deprioritized, underfunded, underresourced, and scrutinized. We seek to remind our audience of the outstanding contributions made to HIV and public health by URM scholars from these programs, such as the Student Op

Recovery Coach Program Implementation Across an Integrated Health System.

Peer recovery coaches (PRCs) are increasingly playing a role in helping patients with substance use disorders engage with treatment. PRCs can support and motivate patients in meeting their self-defined recovery goals, engaging in addiction treatment, navigating the health care system, and overcoming barriers to recovery. This support increases patient engagement and is cost-effective. Little has been written about integrating PRCs in health care settings. In this column, the authors describe the implementation of a PRC program with 23 coaches serving 5,662 participants in diverse clinical sett

Optimization of Sprint Training Among European Coaches: Quality Over Quantity.

PURPOSE: To describe how high-level European sprint coaches (from 100 to 400 m) work to improve important factors associated with the quality of the holistic training process and the quality of the specific training session. METHODS: A descriptive analysis was conducted using questionnaires from 31 European elite sprint coaches (ie, training athletes defined as tiers 3, 4, and 5) who participated voluntarily. RESULTS: The coaches used traditional periodization (45%) with a 10- to 15-day tapering phase (48%) that includes a reduction in volume, maintenance of intensity, and focus on correct t

Evaluating the Impact of a Global Cleft Speech Mentorship Program on Expanding Practitioner Competency in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

A primary challenge in global cleft care lies in the limited opportunities for cleft-specific training and mentorship available to speech practitioners worldwide, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). In addition, the limited number of speech therapists with cleft experience in LMICs creates a significant barrier to access to care for individuals with cleft lip and palate globally. The inaccessibility of cleft-specific clinical instruction and cleft-trained speech therapists impacts the effectiveness of intervention and, subsequently, the speech-language development o

Evaluation of post-discharge engagement for emergency department patients with opioid use history who received telehealth recovery coaching services.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, emergency departments (EDs) across the nation have implemented peer recovery coach (PRC) services to support patients who use opioids. The majority of such interventions discussed in the literature follow an in-person modality where PRCs engage patients directly at the ED bedside. However, the use of telehealth services in EDs is becoming more popular. These services connect PRCs with ED patients in real-time via secure communications technology, and very little is known about the service- and clinical-based outcomes with which they are associated. The current stud

Impact of an osteopathic peer recovery coaching model on treatment outcomes in high-risk men entering residential treatment for substance use disorders.

CONTEXT: The United States has witnessed a disproportionate rise in substance use disorders (SUD) and co-occurring mental health disorders, paired with housing instability, especially among racially minoritized communities. Traditional in-patient residential treatment programs for SUD have proven inconsistent in their effectiveness in preventing relapse and maintaining attrition among these patient populations. There is evidence showing that peer recovery programs led by individuals who have lived experience with SUD can increase social support and foster intrinsic motivation within participan

Assessing the impact of mentorship on knowledge about and self-efficacy for neonatal resuscitation among nurses and midwives in Rwanda.

In the first minute of life after birth, it is critical to effectively manage an infant's respiratory status. Given the critical nature of newborn airway management, it is vital that health professionals have the knowledge and confidence to engage in airway management procedures. Consequently, there has been a call for nurses and midwives to be prepared to skillfully enact neonatal resuscitation interventions when required, especially in low-resource environments, to help reduce neonatal death. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a mentorship program that involves an educatio

Hybrid Ubiquitous Coaching With a Novel Combination of Mobile and Holographic Conversational Agents Targeting Adherence to Home Exercises: Four Design and Evaluation Studies.

BACKGROUND: Effective treatments for various conditions such as obesity, cardiac heart diseases, or low back pain require not only personal on-site coaching sessions by health care experts but also a significant amount of home exercises. However, nonadherence to home exercises is still a serious problem as it leads to increased costs due to prolonged treatments. OBJECTIVE: To improve adherence to home exercises, we propose, implement, and assess the novel coaching concept of hybrid ubiquitous coaching (HUC). In HUC, health care experts are complemented by a conversational agent (CA) that deli

A Personalized Physical Activity Coaching App for Breast Cancer Survivors: Design Process and Early Prototype Testing.

BACKGROUND: Existing evidence supports the many benefits of physical activity (PA) in breast cancer survival. However, few breast cancer survivors adhere to the recommended levels of activity. A PA coaching app that provides personalized feedback, guidance, and motivation to the user might have the potential to engage these individuals in a more active lifestyle, in line with the general recommendations. To develop a successful tool, it is important to involve the end users in the design process and to make theoretically grounded design decisions. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to execute the de

Context matters: A review to formulate a conceptual framework for coaching as a disability accommodation.

Although dyslexia affects 5-8% of the workforce this developmental disorder has not been sufficiently researched in adult populations. Yet a diagnosis confers legal protections as employers must provide disability 'accommodations' to assist work functioning and performance. The implementation of such accommodations, including coaching, lacks theoretical framing and evaluations of impact in practice. Recognizing a need for conceptual work, we undertook a narrative, systematic scoping review from a realist pragmatic epistemology, taking an iterative approach to define and address the review ques

A systematic review of mentorship programs to facilitate transition to post-secondary education and employment for youth and young adults with disabilities.

PURPOSE: Youth with disabilities experience barriers in transitioning to Post-Secondary Education (PSE) and employment. Mentorship programs provide a promising approach to supporting youth through those transitions. This paper aims to identify the effective components of mentorship programs and describe participants' experiences. METHOD: We undertook a systematic review of mentorship interventions for youth and young adults with disabilities. We searched seven electronic databases for peer-reviewed articles published in English between 1980 and 2014. We included articles that examined mentors

Too smart to fail: guide for the struggling medical student.

Medicine is a vocation of perpetual independent learning; long-term success is critically dependent on finding the right resources and establishing effective study methods and test-taking strategies. Students who struggle with the academic transition in medical school have common risk factors and characteristics. We highlight key resources that are available for struggling medical students with an emphasis on West Virginia's HELP, ASPIRE, and STAT programs.

Supervision as-usual--is it enough?

OBJECTIVE: Supervision in most training centers in India happens routinely in all training situations and often for a group of trainees rather than in a one to one protected manner. How satisfied are trainees with the current methods of supervision? How holistic is the supervision? Are there major gaps with this method compared to formal individual time protected supervision? These were some of the questions that were addressed in this study. METHOD: Satisfaction about supervision among 47 post-graduate psychiatry residents in the academic year 2009-2010 was studied. A checklist was construct
