Evaluation of workers exposed to dust containing hard metals and aluminum oxide.

BACKGROUND: Fourteen worker exposed to hard metals and aluminum oxide were evaluated. METHODS: Six heavily exposed workers underwent bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage, and five workers underwent transbronchial biopsy. RESULTS: Microchemical analysis of transbronchial biopsies showed a high lung burden of exogenous particles, especially metal related to their hard metals exposure. Lung tissue and cellular changes, which were associated with exposure to hard metal and aluminum oxide, corresponded well with the microanalytic test results. CONCLUSIONS: Three workers had at biopsy diffuse

Occupational experience and mortality among a cohort of metal components manufacturing workers.

We extended a previous cohort study of workers at a metal components manufacturing facility, which found elevated rats of lung cancer and unspecified nonmalignant respiratory diseases, by evaluating mortality rates from 1950 to 1987 for 3,630 workers categorized according to potential exposures to metal dusts, cutting oils/fluids, metal fumes, and solvents. Lung cancer rates were elevated for workers with exposure to metal dusts and cutting oils/fluids [standardized mortality ratio (SMR) = 1.8; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.2-2.6]. We found that elevated mortality was restricted to those wo

[Comparison of the effects of the irritant action of different amounts of cooling mineral oil with biocides on the rabbit skin].

Effects of different concentrations of Emulgol EN-BIO C/88 oil on rabbit skin were studied. Experiments were carried out to examine oil irritancy to the skin and the inner surface of the ear skin subjected to a 24-hour closed exposure and repeated open exposure for 10 days, respectively. The data obtained have shown that 5 and 10 per cent emulsions of Emulgol EN-BIO C/88 produce mild skin irritation, while a 50 per cent emulsion and concentrate cause irritation of moderate degree. This means that the irritating potential of Emulgol depends on its concentration in oil-water emulsion. It is conc

The assessment of human exposure to radionuclides from a uranium mill tailings release and mine dewatering effluent.

This study provides an assessment of human exposure to radiation from a river system contaminated by radionuclides of the 238U decay series released through a dam break at a uranium mill tailings pond and by the continuous discharge of dewatering effluent from 2 uranium mines. The in vivo analyses of radionuclides in 6 Navajo Indians who lived near the river indicate no detectable elevations above background concentrations. Dose estimates for inhalation of suspended river sediment indicate a maximum annual 50-yr dose commitment of 204 mrem to the endosteum. Estimates of doses (50-yr dose commi

Is potroom asthma due more to sulphur dioxide than fluoride? An inception cohort study in the Australian aluminium industry.

OBJECTIVES: Although an asthma-like syndrome has been recognised in aluminium smelter workers for over 70 years, the causal agent has been difficult to identify. METHODS: An inception cohort study was conducted at two Australian aluminium smelters where 446 employees participated over a period of 9 years. Cumulative exposures between interviews were estimated from job histories using a task exposure matrix based on measurements in the smelters. Participants completed an MRC respiratory questionnaire, spirometry and methacholine challenge test. Data were analysed with generalised estimating eq
